Radiation-sterilization at 25 and 35 kGy of freeze-dried human amniotic membranes caused degradative effects in the biologic dressing. The decrease in pH and increase in UV absorption showed that radiation may have caused possible radiolytic changes in this biomaterial. Total nitrogen content, tensile strength, and [H3]water-retention capacity of the irradiated membranes remained invariable. Molecular topography analysis by atomic force microscopy showed radiation-induced defrayment of the collagen fibers, the major structural protein in amnion.

Religion And Bio-Psycho-Social Health: A Review And Conceptual Model, Loren Marks
Religion And Bio-Psycho-Social Health: A Review And Conceptual Model, Loren Marks
Faculty Publications
This paper presents a research-based conceptual model respectively linking three dimensions of religious experience (religious practices, spiritual beliefs, and faith community) with three dimensions of health (biological, psychological, and social). The model is used as a framework to highlight findings in the religion-health knowledge base and to provide a broad survey of this domain of inquiry. Considerations for future research on religion and health are addressed.

Environmental Justice And Women's Rights: A Tribute To Wangari Maathai, Mechthild Nagel
Environmental Justice And Women's Rights: A Tribute To Wangari Maathai, Mechthild Nagel
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
The United Nations Millenium Development Goals (MDG) focus on key social, economic and political issues; gender and environment are just some of the areas noted. What are the lessons learnt from Kenya’s Green Belt Movement (GBM), spearheaded by Wangari Maathai? MDG analysts might benefit from understanding an NGO’s strategies, like GBM. It will be argued that GBM’s consensus movement mobilized urban and rural women around tree planting income-generating activities, consciousness raising, women’s rights, and political empowerment. GBM’s harambee spirit has the potential of replication across the continent.

Primary Prevention Healthcare Among Black American Men: Social Ecological Factors Predictive Of Prostate Cancer Early Detection Access, Virginia Diane Bush Agbonkhese Woods
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Access to healthcare requires individuals to have a place to go, a healthcare provider to see them, resources to obtain proper care, and the appropriate health services given in an appropriate timeframe. Non-Hispanic Black American men have the highest incidence rate of prostate cancer in the world, 180.6 per 100,000 (NCI, 2004). It is not clear as to why high rates persist, but higher death rates are associated with late detection. This mixed-methods ecological study was to investigate physician and Black male perceptions and practices regarding prostate cancer early detection with prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test, and the digital …
Prenatal Cocaine Exposure And Cardiac Programming, Soochan Bae
Prenatal Cocaine Exposure And Cardiac Programming, Soochan Bae
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Human epidemiological studies have shown a clear association of adverse intrauterine environment and an increased risk of ischemia heart disease in later adult life. Cocaine abuse during pregnancy has been shown to cause abnormities in the heart during fetal and postnatal development, but mechanisms underlying the detrimental effects of cocaine on the developing heart are not fully understood. The central hypothesis is that cocaine exposure during fetal development may cause in utero programming of apoptotic pathways, which may has lasting and prolong effect on heart development postnatally.
In a pregnant rat model, chronic hypoxia increased apoptosis in the fetal heart …
Resveratrol Regulates Igf- Ii And Cathepsin D In Breast Cancer Cells, Sharda Kalla Vyas
Resveratrol Regulates Igf- Ii And Cathepsin D In Breast Cancer Cells, Sharda Kalla Vyas
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in the US. Phytoestrogen resveratrol (RS V) has been described as a potential ehemotherapeutic agent, but has been associated with breast cancer cell growth and cell death. RSV binds to estrogen receptors (ER) and functions as a mixed estrogen agonist/antagonist. The mechanism by which RSV regulates breast cancer growth is largely unknown, but it likely targets factors regulated by estrogens. Insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) and its precursor (proIGF-II) are estrogen-regulated mitogens that are over-expressed in breast carcinoma. Thus, I hypothesized that IGF-II/proIGF-II might mediate the biphasic effects of …
Mechanisms Of Virulence Regulation In Porphyromonas Gingivalis W83, Elaine Ann-Marie Vanterpool
Mechanisms Of Virulence Regulation In Porphyromonas Gingivalis W83, Elaine Ann-Marie Vanterpool
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The expression of extracellular proteolytic activities is highly regulated in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems. This regulation can occur at multiple levels including expression of the protease genes, secretion, processing of an inactive secreted precursor to its active form and/or the posttranslational glycosylation of the proteins. These regulatory mechanisms are vital to ensure that expression is tightly controlled. Porphyromonas gingivalis has been associated with adult periodontitis and in the development of many systematic diseases. The major virulence factors of P. gingivalis, the gingipains, are responsible for pathogenesis including degradation of complement and immunoglobulin, inactivation of cytokines and their receptors, …
Psychological Stress And High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein Levels In Overweight And Obese Men, Olivia L. Moses
Psychological Stress And High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein Levels In Overweight And Obese Men, Olivia L. Moses
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Background and Purpose. High sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), a measure of inflammatory response, is now considered an independent marker for coronary heart disease. Psychological stress also affects the immune system and influences the inflammatory response. Ladwig, et al (2003) found a significant positive association between hs-CRP levels and depression (F=4.9, p^.008) in 726 obese males, even after adjusting for smoking, high blood pressure and age. This study investigated if there was a similar association between increased hs-CRP levels and psychological stress in overweight and obese males.
Method. Sixty-one overweight (n=28) or obese (n= 33) males, ages 20-35, were recmited …
Oxygen Sensing By The Aer And Tsr Receptors Of Escherichia Coli, Jessica Claire Edwards
Oxygen Sensing By The Aer And Tsr Receptors Of Escherichia Coli, Jessica Claire Edwards
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Escherichia coli senses the oxygen concentration of its environment via the Aer and Tsr receptors, and swims to an oxygen concentration that provides optimal energy generation. Aer and Tsr do not sense oxygen per se but, sense the internal energy state via the electron transport system (ETS) in a previously unidentified mechanism. Proton motive force (PMF) and electron flow were proposed as possible sensory signals but, distinguishing between the two was not possible, previously, in live, motile cells. I differentiated PMF from electron flow by creating a series of ETS mutant strains that express ternary combinations of i) aerotaxis receptors, …
Predictors Of Intention To Use Contraception, Given Alcohol Consumption, Among Women In Southeast Alaska, Donna Louise Hebbeler
Predictors Of Intention To Use Contraception, Given Alcohol Consumption, Among Women In Southeast Alaska, Donna Louise Hebbeler
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Fetal alcohol exposure is a serious public health problem and is 100% preventable. Traditionally, FASD prevention programs and research recommendations have targeted peri-conceptual or pregnant women. Another approach to the prevention of FASD involves preventing pregnancy in women who use alcohol. The purpose of this cross sectional study was to identify factors that predicted women’s intention to use contraception using the theory of planned behavior (TPB), to determine if predictors of the theoretical constructs varied in women depending on alcohol use, and to examine interactions between alcohol use and TPB constructs. Qualitative data was gathered to triangulate with the quantitative …
Secular Trends In Life Expectancy By Diet Status Among Never Smoking Seventh-Day Adventists, Noha Salim Daher
Secular Trends In Life Expectancy By Diet Status Among Never Smoking Seventh-Day Adventists, Noha Salim Daher
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
To evaluate how life expectancy changed by age and secular time from 1960 through 1988, two cohort studies, the Adventist Mortality Study (AMS, 1960-1985, n = 27,530) and the Adventist Health Study (AHS, 1976-1988, n = 34,192) were combined. The life expectancy of omnivores was compared to vegetarians separately in never-smoking males and females for all-cause mortality, and where the cause of death was cardiovascular disease or all site-cancer. Life expectancies were calculated for subjects who had survived to ages 30, 50, 70, and 80 during six calendar periods: 1960- 1964, 1965-1969, 1970-1974, 1975-1979, 1980-1984, and 1985-1988. Ten-year calendar periods …

Histological Comparison Of White And Gray Mta In Repair Of Furcation Perforations, Miguel Elias Mego
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has been shown to promote regeneration of the periodontal apparatus when used as a repair material in furcation perforations. Two variations of MTA (Gray and White) have been introduced to the dental market. The purpose of this study was to histologically compare the in vivo response to immediate furcation perforation repair using gray or white MTA in beagle dogs.
Under general anesthesia, non-surgical root canal therapy and furcal perforations were performed on sixteen mandibular premolars of eight 2-year old beagle dogs. The perforations were immediately repaired with either white (n=8) or gray (n=8) MTA. The animals …

Plasticity In Selective Phonotaxis And Neuronal Responses Of Acheta Domesticus, Benjamin Alejandro Navia
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Plasticity of phonotaxis in Acheta domesticus was evaluated in 207 young (5-7 days) and 328 old (28 days) female crickets. Of those that responded (508), their phonotaxis was grouped into selective (80% of young and 34% of old) and unselective (66% of old and 20% of young) on the basis of their responses to syllable period (SP). Two additional subcategories were also found. Some females were selective to the longer syllable periods (18% young, 20% old) while others were selective to the shorter syllable periods (7% young and 12% old). The L3 prothoracic auditory interneuron exhibits a decrementing response to …
Social Welfare Systems And Their Effects On Adolescent Violence, Injecting Drug Use, And Negative Health Behaviors, Elvin A. Hernandez
Social Welfare Systems And Their Effects On Adolescent Violence, Injecting Drug Use, And Negative Health Behaviors, Elvin A. Hernandez
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Youth and young adults who are injection drug users (IDU’s) often live and survive in physical and emotional environments that are associated with negative behaviors and outcomes. Past environmental and social factors, such as participation in social welfare systems or institutionalization in foster care or juvenile hall, have been found to be associated with IDU-involved young adults’ health behaviors when they become older. Social networks, which include drug, sex, or hangout networks, may influence their health outcomes and behaviors. The goals of this dissertation include an investigation of how reported past social welfare participation and institutionalization is associated with IDU-involved …

Reasons For Complementary And Alternative Medicine Usage In Japanese Americans, Theodora Stratis
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) has received much research attention in the last several years due to marked increase in usage in the U.S. To date, findings indicate that 34% of adults in the U.S. report using at least one form of CAM for the maintenance of general health and acute symptoms and such use continue to increase (Astin, 1998; Eisenberg et al., 1993). CAM therapies are also used by those who suffer from chronic physical and psychological symptoms not successfully treated by conventional medicine (Testerman et al., 2004). Though researchers have examined who is using CAM and why they …

Taxonomic Revision And Stratigraphic Provenance Of Histiophorus Rotundus Woodward 1901 (Teleostei, Perciformes), Kenneth A. Monsch, Harry L. Fierstine, Robert E. Weems
Biological Sciences
Until recently, Histiophorus rotundus Woodward 1901, was known from a single, poorly preserved rostrum from the Tertiary phosphate beds near Charleston, South Carolina, an area from which many fossils have been described. The specimen is relatively featureless externally; its internal anatomy is unknown and the documentation of its geological provenance was poor. In an earlier revision the species was transferred to the fossil billfish genus Xiphiorhynchus Van Beneden, 1871. Here we confirm this designation, supported by new morphological studies of the holotype, recently found specimens of tXiphiorhynchus rotundus (Woodward, 1901), and the stratigraphic record of tXiphiorhynchus. The systematic paleontology we …

Tracing Chinese Gay Cinema 1993-2002, Lan Dong
Tracing Chinese Gay Cinema 1993-2002, Lan Dong
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Lan Dong explores in her paper, "Tracing Chinese Gay Cinema 1993-2002" the recent landscape of Chinese gay cinema through discussing the following three feature films: Chen Kaige's Farewell My Concubine (1993), Zhang Yuan's East Palace, West Palace (1996), and Stanley Kwan's Lan Yu (2001). The grouping derives from the concern that they all set their stories in Beijing. Using the capital city as a cultural background, the films display how queer is perceived in China from the 1920s to the end of the 1990s. All three storylines portray the characters' struggle to recognize their particular identity as gay men. In …

Sensory Modality Used By Coyotes In Responding To Antipredator Compounds In The Blood Of Texas Horned Lizards, Wade C. Sherbrooke, J. Russell Mason
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
We investigated the hypothesis that the squirting of blood from orbital sinuses by Texas horned lizards (Phrynosoma cornutum) is an antipredator defense against some mammalian species. Coyotes (Canis latrans) were tested for the first time. As expected, Texas horned lizards squirted blood in response to coyote attacks, and coyotes exhibited startle response, avoidance response, or both as a result of these events. Whereas lizard carcasses mixed into normal foodmash elicited regurgitation by coyotes, possibly due to physical effects, blood of horned lizards similarly mixed into food did not. Coyote responses to simulated squirts of 5 compounds, …
