Stability Of Transport And Rate Processes [Review], Yaşar Demirel Jun 2005

Stability Of Transport And Rate Processes [Review], Yaşar Demirel

Papers in Thermal Mechanics

About fifty years ago, the Turing instability demonstrated that even simple reaction-diffusion systems might lead to spatial order and differentiation, while the Rayleigh-Bénard instability showed that the maintenance of nonequilibrium might be the source of order in fluids subjected to a thermodynamic force above a critical value. Therefore, distance from global equilibrium in the form of magnitude of a thermodynamic force emerges as another constraint of stability; some systems may enhance perturbations, and evolve to highly organized states called the dissipative structures after a critical distance on the thermodynamic branch. Although the kinetics and transport coefficients represent short-range interactions, chemical …

Subtextual Gendering Processes : A Study Of Japanese Retail Firms In Hong Kong, Mei Ling, May Wong Jun 2005

Subtextual Gendering Processes : A Study Of Japanese Retail Firms In Hong Kong, Mei Ling, May Wong

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

This study examines equal opportunities for women employees in two Japanese-owned (Tairo and Okadaya) retail companies in Hong Kong. This paper initially discusses the various explanations for gender inequality put forward by scholars. Since the equal opportunity legislation - specifically Sex Discrimination Ordinance (SDO) - was introduced in Hong Kong in 1996, little research can explain as to why gender inequality persists. The issue can altematively be understood by examining the subtextual gendering processes. Concealed gendering processes (re)produce gender inequality based on hegemonic power, through structural, cultural, interaction and identity arrangements. Accounts of female staff at various hierarchies reveal that …

Sensing Of Antipyretic Carboxylates By Simple Chromogenic Calix[4]Pyrroles, Ryuhei Nishiyabu, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr. Jun 2005

Sensing Of Antipyretic Carboxylates By Simple Chromogenic Calix[4]Pyrroles, Ryuhei Nishiyabu, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We present a simple, two- or three-step method for the synthesis of chromogenic octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole-based (OMCP) sensors for anions. Electrophilic aromatic substitution allows for converting the pyrrole moieties of OMCP into a dye. The formation of a sensor-anion complex results in partial charge transfer and a dramatic change in color. The absorption (UV-vis) and NMR titration experiments show that the chromogenic OMCPs sense anions administered as aqueous solutions, even at high ionic strength ( approximately 0.1 M NaCl), while displaying selectivity for pyrophosphate and carboxylate anions. The experiments with polyurethane sensor films show a strong response for aqueous carboxylates, such as …

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Despite having a very low incidence of disease, reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) are subject to tuberculosis (TB) testing requirements for interstate shipment and herd accreditation in the United States. Improved TB tests are desperately needed, as many reindeer are falsely classified as reactors by current testing procedures. Sera collected sequentially from 11 (experimentally) Mycobacterium bovis-infected reindeer and 4 noninfected reindeer were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunoblotting, and multiantigen print immunoassay (MAPIA) for antibody specific to M. bovis antigens. Specific antibody was detected as early as 4 weeks after challenge with M. bovis. By MAPIA, sera …

Bounded Rationality Of Homo Classificus: The Law And Bioeconomics Of Social Norms As Classification, Janet T. Landa Jun 2005

Bounded Rationality Of Homo Classificus: The Law And Bioeconomics Of Social Norms As Classification, Janet T. Landa

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In the "New Chicago School" ("NCS") law and economics literature that emerged in the 1990s, social norms play an important function in their dual role as constraints on behavior and as signaling devices. Missing in the NCS social norms literature, however, is any treatment of social norms as classification, a concept which is fundamental to a more complete theory of social norms. In this Article, I show that my early 1980s theory of social norms embedded in the ethnically homogeneous middleman groups ("EHMGs") clearly falls squarely within the NCS tradition. Since the 1980s, I have extended my law and economics …

Neuroeconomics And Rationality, Terrence Chorvat, Kevin Mccabe Jun 2005

Neuroeconomics And Rationality, Terrence Chorvat, Kevin Mccabe

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The assumption of rationality is both one of the most important and most controversial assumptions of modern economics. This Article discusses what current experimental economic as well as neuroscience research tells us about the relationship between rationality and the mechanisms of human decision making. The Article explores the meaning of rationality, with a discussion of the distinction between traditional constructivist rationality and more ecological concepts of rationality. The Article argues that ecological notions of rationality more accurately describe both human neural mechanisms as well as a wider variety of human behavior than do constructivist notions of rationality.

Is There A Southern Doctor In The House?, Peter S. Carmichael Jun 2005

Is There A Southern Doctor In The House?, Peter S. Carmichael

Civil War Institute Faculty Publications

Doctoring the South does not go down easily, but a patient reader will benefit immeasurably from this brilliantly conceived and thoroughly researched book. Stephen Stowe has penetrated the scientific and cultural world of southern physicians during the mid-nineteenth century, showing how white doctors made meaning of their lives as they struggled to gain mastery of the sickly bodies of others. The confrontation between patient and physician, between sickness and health, reveals what Stowe calls the country orthodoxy style of southern practitioners. Country orthodoxy inextricably tied a doctor’s understanding of what it meant to be a professional to his local community. …
