2005 Key Strategic Issues List (Ksil), Antulio J. Echevarria Dr.
2005 Key Strategic Issues List (Ksil), Antulio J. Echevarria Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Half a decade into the new millennium, the strategic environment continues to change rapidly, and in important ways. Some of those changes, of course, challenge U.S. interests, while others advance them. And the challenges assume regular and, increasingly now, irregular forms. Yet, while the causes of change are many, the discernable patterns are few. It is all the more important, therefore, that the U.S. Army maintain a strategic perspective—that it take advantage of the collective insights of scholars and senior-level students both within the defense community and beyond. The Key Strategic Issues List (KSIL), developed at the U.S. Army War …

Missy ‘Misdemeanor’ Elliott: Rapping On The Frontiers Of Female Identity, Eliza Sellen
Missy ‘Misdemeanor’ Elliott: Rapping On The Frontiers Of Female Identity, Eliza Sellen
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper provides an analysis of Missy Elliott as a contemporary icon, using the innovation and creativity of two of her music videos (One Minute Man and She’s A Bitch), as media texts that both illuminate and disrupt feminist frameworks of identity. This paper begins with a discussion of the ways in which Elliott subverts and revises cultural signifiers; particular attention is paid to female embodiment and sexuality, blackness and power. The paper moves to discuss the visual landscape created through this cultural play, and explores this terrain through the theoretical frameworks of science fiction and technology.

Can Al Qaeda Be Deterred From Using Nuclear Weapons?, Lewis A. Dunn
Can Al Qaeda Be Deterred From Using Nuclear Weapons?, Lewis A. Dunn
WMD Occasional Papers
The use of a nuclear weapon would be the ultimate al Qaeda terrorist outrage. Over the past decade, however, the prevailing assessment of the likelihood of terrorist acquisition and use of nuclear (specifically), biological, chemical, or radiological (NBC/R) weapons has been reversed.1 In the 1990s, most policymakers and analysts were highly skeptical of warnings of terrorist use of these weapons. Today, the widespread assumption is that al Qaeda’s acquisition of NBC/R weapons would be rapidly followed by their use—that is, employment via the release of an agent, the dispersal of radiological materials, or the detonation of a nuclear explosive. This …

A Primer On The Detection Of Nuclear And Radiological Weapons, Gary W. Phillips, David J. Nagel, Timothy Coffey
Defense and Technology Papers
This study upon which this report is based was undertaken because of the large and growing importance of detection technologies for nuclear or radiological weapons of mass destruction (NRWMD). While this report will focus on detection of NRWMD, the NRWMD problem does not have a purely technical solution and th reasons for this will be become clear in this report.
Evaluation Of Glycine Max Mrna Clusters, Ronald L. Frank, Fikret Erçal
Evaluation Of Glycine Max Mrna Clusters, Ronald L. Frank, Fikret Erçal
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Background: Clustering the ESTs from a large dataset representing a single species is a convenient starting point for a number of investigations into gene discovery, genome evolution, expression patterns, and alternatively spliced transcripts. Several methods have been developed to accomplish this, the most widely available being UniGene, a public domain collection of gene-oriented clusters for over 45 different species created and maintained by NCBI. The goal is for each cluster to represent a unique gene, but currently it is not known how closely the overall results represent that reality. UniGene's build procedure begins with initial mRNA clusters before joining ESTs. …
Isoelectric Point Prediction From The Amino Acid Sequence Of A Protein, Matthew Conte
Isoelectric Point Prediction From The Amino Acid Sequence Of A Protein, Matthew Conte
Theses
Proteins often do not migrate as expected in two dimensional electrophoresis based on their primary sequence. The predicted isoelectric point (pI) frequently does not coincide with experimental pI values obtained in the laboratory. The reasons for these differences led to this study. Initially, 2DE data from the E. coli proteome was collected and formatted. This dataset was split into three parts each consisting of different levels of pI discrepancy (ΔpI). The protein sequence data for each ΔpI subset was run through a pipeline. At each stage of the pipeline the data were analyzed by comparing each of the three ΔpI …

Dartmouth Scholarship
The human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infects and transforms CD4+ lymphocytes and causes adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL), an aggressive lymphoproliferative disease that is often fatal. Here, we demonstrate that the HTLV-1 pX splice-variant p30II markedly enhances the transforming potential of Myc and transcriptionally activates the human cyclin D2 promoter, dependent upon its conserved Myc-responsive E-box enhancer elements, which are associated with increased S-phase entry and multinucleation. Enhancement of c-Myc transforming activity by HTLV-1 p30II is dependent upon the transcriptional coactivators, transforming transcriptional activator protein/p434 and TIP60, and it requires TIP60 histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity and correlates with the …

The Impact Of Cultural And Religious Values On Television And Newspaper Advertising Content And Appeal: A Cross-Cultural Study Of The United States And The Arab World, Morris A. Kalliny
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Standardization versus adaptation of advertising has been a subject of great controversy that has been debated for more than 50 years. Scholars have pointed out the increasing demand for more cross-cultural research on advertising content that can contribute to the standardization versus adaptation debate. Scholars have also pointed out that although the Arab world offers great opportunities for multinational corporations, the Arab world has been severely neglected in academic research. To comply with this demand, this study investigates the similarities and differences of the manifestation of cultural and religious values in the U.S. and the Arab world (Egypt, Lebanon, Kuwait, …

U.S. Defense Strategy After Saddam, Michael E. O'Hanlon Dr.
U.S. Defense Strategy After Saddam, Michael E. O'Hanlon Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
In this defense strategy and budget book, Michael O'Hanlon argues that America's large defense budget cannot be pared realistically in the years ahead. But given the extreme demands of the Iraq mission, particularly on the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, he suggests how reductions in various weapons modernization programs and other economies might free up enough funds to add at least 40,000 more ground troops to today's military. He also reviews the military lessons of Afghanistan and Iraq, the Bush administration's new overseas basing plan, and the arguments for and against a draft. O'Hanlon also addresses the important question of …
North Korea's Strategic Intentions, Andrew Scobell Dr.
North Korea's Strategic Intentions, Andrew Scobell Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Dr. Andrew Scobell examines the topic of Pyongyang's strategic intentions. He first identifies a broad spectrum of expert views and distills this wisdom into three "packages" of possible strategic intentions. He then sets out to test which package appears to reflect actual North Korean policy. While he opines that one is more likely than the others, he concludes that it is impossible to say with certainty which package most closely resembles reality. As a result, he suggests that further probing of Pyongyang's intentions is advisable.

Dramatic Reduction In Predation On Marine Turtle Nests Through Improved Predator Monitoring And Management, Richard M. Engeman, R. Erik Martin, Henry T. Smith, John Woolard, Carrie K. Crady, Stephanie A. Shwiff, Bernice Constantin, Margo Stahl, John Griner
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
We describe improvements to monitoring/ indexing methodology for predators of marine turtle nests on the east coast of Florida, and the resulting marine turtle conservation implications from integrating the methodology into predator management. A strip transect from dune line to the shore improved an already successful design for monitoring raccoons, and was also sensitive for armadillos. The data were integrated into predator management operations to effectively and efficiently remove the species responsible for turtle nest predation. Tracking plot data also served to validate predator patterns of behavior relative to turtle nesting and improve prospects for preventive predator management strategies. Perhaps …

The Phosphoglycolate Phosphatase Gene And The Mutation In The Phosphoglycolate Phosphatase-Deficient Mutant (Pgp1-1) Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Kensaku Suzuki, Hidenobu Uchida, Tarlan G. Mamedov
Papers in Biochemical Engineering
The sequences of the phosphoglycolate phosphatase (PGPase) gene Pgp1 and the 5′-upstream region from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii wildtype 2137 and the pgp1-1 mutant N142 that lacks the activity of PGPase (PGP1) were determined. The comparison revealed the alteration of a G to A at position 98 relative to the start codon. This destroyed the “GT” splice donor site at the beginning of the first intron of this gene, resulting in an extension of the first exon to 49 translatable codons followed by a stop codon, containing the codons corresponding to whole transit peptide for the chloroplast stroma and the first four …

The Effects Of Livestock On California Ground Squirrels (Spermophilus Beecheyii), Jeffrey S. Fehmi, Sabrina E. Russo, James W. Bartolome
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Understanding the impacts of livestock grazing on wildlands is important for making appropriate ecosystem management decisions. Using livestock exclosures, we examined the effects of moderate cattle grazing on the abundance of California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyii Richardson) and the spatial distribution of active burrows within their colonies in grassland and blue oak (Quercus douglasii Hook. & Arn.) savanna habitats in the coastal range of California over a 3-year period (1991– 1994). Overall, relative population densities of California ground squirrels declined significantly throughout the experiment, but did not differ between grazed and ungrazed colonies or between habitats. There was …

An Acquired Form Of Bernard Soulier Syndrome Associated With Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Khalil A. Aziz
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To investigate glycoprotein-1b (GP-1b) expression on platelets from patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). METHODS: Purified platelets, obtained from AML-patients and normal control subjects, were examined for surface membrane GP1b-expression by flow cytometry and GP1b-mediated aggregation responses by aggregometry. The level of elastase in plasma from patients and controls was measured by enzymed-linked immunosorbent assay. The whole of this work was carried out at the University of Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom during the period of 1994-2001. RESULTS: Platelets from the majority of AML-patients showed reduced GP1b-expression and reduced GP1b-mediated aggregation responses. Reduction in platelet GP1b-expression was associated with increased …

OBJECTIVE: The gene encoding the DNA repair enzyme O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) is transcriptionally silenced by promoter hypermethylation in several human cancers including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). We explored the aberrant promoter methylation of MGMT in Saudi diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and to investigate MGMT hypermethylation has an effect on patient9s overall survival. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, 100 cases of DLBCL were collected from the Department of Pathology at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We used methylation specific polymerase chain reaction to analyze the MGMT promoter methylation status in 100 tumor …

Diphyllobothrium Fayi N. Sp. (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) From The Pacific Walrus, Odobenus Rosmarus Divergens, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
An independent species of cestode of the genus Diphyllobothrium Cobbold, 1858, known only from the Pacific walrus, Odobenus rosmarus divergens Illiger, has been incorrectly designated Diphyllobothrium cordatum (Leuckart, 1863) in the literature since 1955. That cestode is described in this study as Diphyllobothrium fayi n. sp. on the basis of specimens obtained from walruses from the northern Bering Sea and the Arctic Ocean. It is distinguished readily from D. cordatum by its much larger strobila of different form and by a range of morphological characteristics of taxonomic significance in the reproductive organs. Comparisons were made with specimens of D. cordatum …

An Evaluation Of Wetland No Net Loss And Mitigation Under Section 404 Of The Clean Water Act On The Santa Rosa Plain, Sonoma County, California., Teresa M. Silence
Student Work
The Santa Rosa Plain (Plain), Sonoma County, California, has lost 85% of its vernal pools, affecting the survival of four threatened and endangered species. The ability of Section 404 of the Clean Water Act to achieve the goal of no net loss is a particular importance in areas, such as the Plain, where wetland resources have become severely impacted. The objective of the study was to determine if a no net loss of wetland area occurred on the Plain, to evaluate the implementation of the Santa Rosa Plain programmatic permit, and to examine trends associated with compensatory medication. Fifty-two Section …
