Dna-Templated Assembly Of Metallic Nanowires, Qun Gu Jul 2005

Dna-Templated Assembly Of Metallic Nanowires, Qun Gu

Doctoral Dissertations

Nanowires are widely recognized as key elements in the development of futuristic nanoscale devices of nanoelectronics, optoelectronics and nano-electro-mechanic systems. Lithographic fabrication, however, faces increasing difficulties in the realization of continuously miniaturized features. The “Bottom-up” approach is a promising successor to lithography for fabrication of nanostructures. DNA is a natural template for nanowire assembly. The linear polynucleotide chain has a width of 2 nm and a length of 0.34 run per nucleoside subunit.

One-dimensional magnetic Co and Ni nanoparticles have been assembled in-situ for the first time by use of single DNA molecules as templates. Target metallic nanowires that are …

Applying Intent-Based Parentage Principles To Nonlegal Lesbian Coparents, Melanie B. Jacobs Jul 2005

Applying Intent-Based Parentage Principles To Nonlegal Lesbian Coparents, Melanie B. Jacobs

Northern Illinois University Law Review

With increasing frequency, courts are being asked to determine the parental rights of lesbian partners; some of these partners have no biological connection to their child(ren) while others have donated genetic material. Current parentage laws are often inadequate to resolve these disputes and even when they are available, courts are often reluctant to apply them and depart from the traditional family law paradigm of one mother/one father. In this article, the author argues that courts should embrace the doctrine of intentional parenthood to legalize the rights of nonlegal lesbian partners, with two caveats: first, courts should not apply intent-based principles …

Child Support Obligations That Result From Male Sexual Victimization: An Examination Of The Requirement Of Support, Dana Johnson Jul 2005

Child Support Obligations That Result From Male Sexual Victimization: An Examination Of The Requirement Of Support, Dana Johnson

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This comment examines the consideration of male sexual victimization in child support judgments. Specifically, this comment addresses situations in which fatherhood resulted from male sexual victimization. State courts have rejected the arguments that young boys have made in an attempt to avoid the financial consequences of their victimization. While these arguments have all failed, this comment argues that state courts have not adequately considered male sexual victimization in this context. These courts have clung tightly to child support policies, but have failed to protect victimized boys by adhering to gender stereotypes about boys and sex. With more education and a …

Conversations Between Anthropologists And Economists, Metin Cosgel Jul 2005

Conversations Between Anthropologists And Economists, Metin Cosgel

Economics Working Papers

Interdisciplinary citation patterns and other indicators of the flow and sharing of academic knowledge suggest that economists and anthropologists do not talk to each other. Previous studies of this puzzling trend have typically attributed the problem to methodological differences between the two disciplines. Although there are significant differences between economics and anthropology in behavioral assumptions and modes of inquiry, similar differences exist between them and other disciplines (some with much heavier volumes of cross-citations with economics or anthropology), suggesting that the source of the problem lies elsewhere. This paper considers the problem at a deeper level by examining systematic differences …

V-Atpase Expression During Development Of Artemia Franciscana Embryos: Potential Role For Proton Gradients In Anoxia Signaling, Joseph A. Covi, Steven C. Hand Jul 2005

V-Atpase Expression During Development Of Artemia Franciscana Embryos: Potential Role For Proton Gradients In Anoxia Signaling, Joseph A. Covi, Steven C. Hand

Faculty Publications

Under anoxia, Artemia franciscana embryos downregulate metabolic processes and approach an ametabolic state. Entrance into this quiescent state is accompanied by a profound acidification of the intracellular space, and more than two decades of research now clearly demonstrates that this acidification is critical to metabolic downregulation in anoxic embryos. However, the proximal mechanisms responsible for the pH shift remain largely unidentified. Here, we report evidence demonstrating expression of the V-ATPase in encysted embryos and present an argument for its involvement in the intracellular acidification induced by anoxia. We identified a single B-subunit cDNA sharing the greatest degree of sequence similarity …

V-Atpase Inhibition Prevents Recovery From Anoxia In Artemia Franciscana Embryos: Quiescence Signaling Through Dissipation Of Proton Gradients, Joseph A. Covi, W. Dale Treleaven, Steven C. Hand

Faculty Publications

The metabolic downregulation critical for long-term survival of Artemia franciscana embryos under anoxia is mediated, in part, by a progressive intracellular acidification. However, very little is known about the mechanisms responsible for the pH transitions associated with exposure to, and recovery from, oxygen deprivation. In the present study, we demonstrate with 31P-NMR that incubation of intact embryos with the V-ATPase inhibitor bafilomycin A1 severely limits intracellular alkalinization during recovery from anoxia without affecting the restoration of cellular nucleotide triphosphate levels. Based on these data, it appears that oxidative phosphorylation and ATP resynthesis can only account for the first 0.3 pH …

The Regulation Of Fatty Acid Synthase By Stat5a, Jessica C. Hogan, Jacqueline M. Stephens Jul 2005

The Regulation Of Fatty Acid Synthase By Stat5a, Jessica C. Hogan, Jacqueline M. Stephens

Faculty Publications

Growth hormone (GH) diminishes adipose tissue mass in vivo and decreases expression and activity of fatty acid synthase (FAS) in adipocytes. GH and prolactin (PRL) are potent activators of STAT5 and exert adipogenic and antiadipogenic effects in adipocytes. In this study, we demonstrate that GH and PRL decrease the mRNA and protein levels of FAS in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. We present evidence that indicates that FAS is repressed at the level of transcription. In addition, PRL responsiveness was shown to exist between -1,594 and -700 of the rat FAS promoter. Moreover, responsiveness to PRL was abolished with mutation of a site …

Ethnicity, Education, And Blood Pressure In Cuba, Pedro Ordunez, Jose Luis Bernal Munoz, Alfredo Espinosa-Brito, Luis Carlos Silva, Richard S. Cooper

Faculty Publications

The causes of variation in hypertension risk by ethnicity and educational level are not well understood. To gain further insight into this issue in a nonindustrialized country, a population-based sample of 1,667 persons aged 15-74 years was recruited in Cienfuegos, Cuba. In this 2001-2002 study, interviewers classified 29% of participants as Black or mulatto and 71% as White. Educational attainment was stratified at the median number of school years. Compared with White women, non-White women had higher blood pressures (3.0/1.7, systolic blood pressure/ diastolic blood pressure) and a higher prevalence of hypertension (24%, 95% confidence interval: 20, 28 vs. 15%, …

What Sort Of Mental Health Problems Are Experienced By Women In Contemporary British Society? What Do Different Feminist Perspectives Offer As Alleviation?, Penny Halliday Jul 2005

What Sort Of Mental Health Problems Are Experienced By Women In Contemporary British Society? What Do Different Feminist Perspectives Offer As Alleviation?, Penny Halliday

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay argues that by labelling British women’s mental health distress and treatment in terms of a purely medical model, underlying contributory social structures and phenomena such as gendered roles, ethnicity and poverty, have largely been ignored by the (male dominated) psychiatric profession. This labelling is historically rooted in the pathologisation of the feminine condition; therefore, women’s mental ill health is substantially a social construct and a product of a patriarchal society. To fully explore a way through mental health distress - a term used by MIND to emphasise the inorganic origins of many mental health problems - labels need …

Fathers And The Supreme Court: Founding Fathers And Nuturing Fathers, Nancy E. Dowd Jul 2005

Fathers And The Supreme Court: Founding Fathers And Nuturing Fathers, Nancy E. Dowd

UF Law Faculty Publications

This article critiques the Supreme Court's negative, stereotypic views of fatherhood, especially unmarried fatherhood, and argues that the Court should reconsider and refine its definition of fatherhood around nurture. The corrective for the Court's current view is not to revert to a status-based definition of fatherhood, but rather to reinforce and recast its prior fathers' rights decisions to establish a definition grounded on relationship and care. What should be discarded are outdated stereotypes about men as incapable, incompetent caregivers, as well as patriarchal norms of status and ownership based in genetic and economic fatherhood recognized exclusively within marriage. Instead, fatherhood …

Terrorism Risk In A Post-9/11 Economy: The Convergence Of Capital Markets, Insurance, And Government Action, Robert J. Rhee Jul 2005

Terrorism Risk In A Post-9/11 Economy: The Convergence Of Capital Markets, Insurance, And Government Action, Robert J. Rhee

UF Law Faculty Publications

September 11 changed the American economy and the global insurance market. The insurance industry no longer covers terrorism risk for "free." The traditional insurance mechanism alone cannot spread the risk of repeated catastrophic losses. Beyond the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act of 2002 lingers the questions of a longterm solution and government's role therein. Government can assume different roles: reinsurer, wealth (re)distributor, regulator, or a combination thereof. This article suggests that the government should foster a regulatory and tax environment in which the private sector can develop a capital market solution for terrorism risk. Securitization is an alternative to reinsurance and …
