The avian egg provides nutrients and protects the growing embryo from physical and microbial harm. Structures fundamental to the protection are the membrane layers, which are tightly meshed networks of collagen fibers, and the eggshell, which is composed of calcite crystals, (CaC03). The eggs of Ringed Turtle-Dove and commercially bred chickens were selected for the study. Eggs of commercially bred chickens are twice in length and width of the dove eggs. Features analyzed are components of quality and strength of eggshells included shell thickness, membrane thickness, and concentration and size of vesicles. A comparative study of the bird eggs was …

Reproductive Behaviors Of Two Congeneric, Sympatric Jumping Spiders: Gene Flow Barriers And Polyandry, Stacey Nicole Gingras

This two part study compares aspects of jumping spider reproductive behavior and their implications 1) as gene flow barriers during the process of speciation and 2) in the occurrence of polyandry. Courtship behaviors of Phidippus audax and P. carolinensis were observed. P. carolinensis displays simple courtship behavior when compared to the visually complex behavior of P. audax. P. carolinensis males appear to be incorporating a vibratory element into their courtship display, and a possible stridulatory organ, located on the male pedipalp, is described. Large differences in courtship display, complexity of courtship badges, and phenologies between the species most likely prevent …

The main objective of the pilot scale study was to compare the performance of recirulating clinoptilolite biofilter with course gravel biofilter used to treat simulated septic tank effluent by simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. For better comparison of performance of total inorganic nitrogen removal and COD removal both the biofilter were chosen of identical size and identical operating conditions were maintained in the laboratory setup. Both the biofilters were operated at recycle ratio of 6 and surface hydraulic loading rate of 7.5 gal/ft2/day without recycle and 52.5 gal/ft2/day with recycle through out the duration of the duration of the research. This comment contends that tort liability can complement legislative and administrative government regulation of the food industry, providing sellers and manufacturers of food with an incentive to prevent consumers from over-consumption and becoming obese. Specifically, this comment supports the proposition that after government regulations are promulgated by Congress, claims should be allowed by state attorneys general to recoup Medicaid costs incurred in treating health conditions and illnesses caused by obesity.

Introduction. The antitumor antibiotic mithramycin has also been shown to be a potent and effective inhibitor of fibrosis following glaucoma surgery. This DNA interacting drug displays high affinity binding to GC rich sequences in DNA, including those present in the promoter of the gene encoding the Α1 chain of type I collagen (COL1A1).

Objective. To evaluate the effects of mithramycin on the production of type I collagen in fibroblast cultures from patients with systemic sclerosis. Methods. With the increase of genome and proteome data, phylogenetic information and phylogenetic analysis tools are increasing greatly in current biological repositories. First, many repositories allow users to browse information about species through taxonomic tools. These tools present the species with its lineage path and links to the various types of information the repository provides about the species. Second, some multiple sequence alignment tools offer users basic phylogenetic data through applying basic reconstruction algorithms to the alignment. Celastrina Serotina (Lycaenidae: Polyommatinae): A New Butterfly Species From The Northeastern United States And Eastern Canada, Harry Pavulaan, David M. Wright

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

A new light-venter Azure species, Celastrina serotina, is described from the northeastern United States and eastern Canada. The flight period of this univoltine spring species is interpolated (allochrony) between its sympatric congeners, C. lucia Auctorum (not Kirby) and C. neglecta (Edwards). In this regard it is similar to C. neglectamajor Opler & Krizek in the southern Appalachians and C. idella Wright & Pavulaan on the New Jersey coastal plain. In a significant portion of its range, C. serotina larvae feed on eriophyid mite-formed galls on the upper surface of Black Cherry Prunus serotina Ehrh. …

An Annotated Checklist Of The Tephritidae (Diptera) Of Florida, Bruce D. Sutton, Gary J. Steck

A total of 73 species of tephritid flies has been recorded from Florida since the early 1800s. Of these, 7 species are considered to represent occasional waifs or accidental introductions from surrounding regions that are not known to have established populations in Florida; 6 are exotic pests which failed to colonize or were extirpated; and 7 species are represented only by early literature records and are considered dubious for the state. Thus, the tephritid fauna of Florida currently comprises a total of 53 species of which 1 species is precinctive to the state and considered to be endangered.

The six valid described species of Metacyrba are diagnosed and re-illustrated to show previously unrecognized genitalic differences. Metacyrba similis Banks 1904 is resurrected as a subspecies, becoming Metacyrba taeniola similis Banks 1904, n. status. The female of Metacyrba pictipes Banks 1903 is described for the first time. The name Araecerus fasciculatus (DeGeer 1775) is resurrected for the coffee bean weevil, with the following synonyms: Bruchus cacao Fabricius 1775, Bruchus peregrinus Herbst 1797, Bruchus capsinicola Fabricius 1798, Anthribus coffeae Fabricius 1801, Amblycerus japonicus Thunberg 1815 (probably a synonym), Anthribus alternans Germar 1824, Phloeobius griseus of Stephens 1831, not Fabricius 1792, Cratoparis parvirostris Thomson 1858, Araecerus seminarius Chevrolat 1871, and Tropideres (Rhaphitropis) mateui Cobos 1954. Lectotypes are designated for A. fasciculatus, B. capsinicola, and A. alternans. A diagnosis distinguishes Araecerus from all 650 anthribid genera and a diagnosis for the species is as complete as possible with materials studied. …

Nanotechnology is concerned with the creation and manipulation of functional structures having dimensions ranging from a few to hundreds of nanometers. This size range encompasses a scientific and technological gap. The most effective strategy for the development of viable new technology is, therefore, to close this gap at both ends through the use of the “top-down” or “bottom-up” approaches. Biological macromolecules including DNA, RNA, and proteins, have intrinsic features that make W them potential building blocks for the bottom-up fabrication of nanodevices. RNA is unique in nanoscale fabrication due to its amazing diversity of function and structure. RNA molecules can be designed and manipulated with a level of simplicity characteristic of DNA while possessing versatility in structure and function similar to that of proteins. RNA molecules typically contain a large variety of single stranded loops suitable for inter- and intra-molecular interaction. Analyses ofliving (Rose Bengal stained) deep-sea benthic foraminifera collected on the Southern California margin reveal temporal and spatial changes in foraminiferal assemblages related to changes in sea-surface productivity. Samples were collected from two sites in May, August, and October 1996. Results show that foraminiferal microhabitats are not static at these sites, and some species ( e.g., Bolivina spissa and Uvigerina peregrina) responded to the change in seasons with a change in their vertical distribution profiles, which is indicative of microhabitat preferences. Species such as Buliminella tenuata changed sediment depth in different stages of their life cycles, which has implications for …

In August 2004, we had the opportunity to travel to Jamaica to lead a pilot workshop for Jamaican high school math teachers. The workshop focused on the importance of mathematical context in the teaching of mathematics. It was sponsored by the Gibraltar Institute, a Jamaica-based nongovernmental organization led by Trevor Campbell (Pomona College) and Reginald Nugent (Cal State Pomona), Jamaica’s College of Agriculture, Science and Education, and Harvey Mudd College.

Genetic programming is an automatic programming method that uses biologically inspired methods to evolve programs. Genetic programming, and evolutionary methods in general, are useful for problem domains in which a method for \emph{constructing} solutions is either not known or infeasible, but a method for \emph{rating} solutions exists. In order to address more complex problem domains, techniques exist to extract functions (modules) automatically during a GP search. This work describes a method to identify useful automatically extracted functions from a GP search to assist subsequent GP searches within the same problem domain, using significance testing. Gene duplication occurs when a mutation leads to the copying of a region of DNA that contains a functional gene. After duplication, there will be two copies of the gene in the genome. Gene duplication can have deleterious effects but it can also be the source of novelty.
