Recently, a one-chain monoclinic unit cell for Cellulose IIII having a single glucose in the asymmetric unit was proposed based on high-resolution diffraction patterns. The new work challenged a two-chain structure published 25 years earlier, although it did not provide new three-dimensional coordinates. Our goals were to solve the structure by modeling, find whether modeling would reject the previously determined two-chain unit cell, and compare the model with the anticipated experimental structure. Combinations of the O2, O3, and O6 hydroxyls produced 54 starting structures. Clusters of 13 cellotetraose chains terminated by methyl groups for each of the 54 starting structures …

In 2004, a field sampling study was initiated along the southern shoreline area of Lake Pontchartrain in Jefferson Parish, specifically, around Bonnabel Canal (Pumping Station No.1) to identify the effect of urban stormwater discharges on Lake Pontchartrain and to simulate the plume patterns from the Bonnabel Canal. Sixteen sampling stations were selected along the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain. Under dry weather conditions Fecal Coliform values exceeded the limit of 200 MPN/100mL at 3 of 16 stations. Fecal Coliform counts were found to be "wet" weather-dependent and unsuitable for primary contact recreation for at least three to four days following …

To avoid the spread of disease from sewage treatment effluents, pathogenic microorganisms present must be destroyed by one or a combination of disinfection methods. Chlorine remains the predominant disinfectant used although it consumes considerable amounts of energy and has associated exposure risks from production, transportation and storage of this poisonous gas. In addition to bacteria and other objectionable microorganisms, color, suspended and colloidal solids also require removal from water for reuse. Aluminum and iron additions have been used to coagulate and remove non-settleable solids. By electrically dissolving aluminum to form solids-bridging aluminum hydroxide, the water itself can also be disinfected …

While genetic improvement of susceptible crop species may enhance resistance to microbial pathogens and facilitate reduced pesticide load, the possibility for transmission of novel genes to wild relatives has hampered acceptance of GM crops in some markets. Chloroplast transformation presents an attractive alternative to nuclear transformation and offers the potential to ameliorate these environmental concerns. Most agronomically important species exhibit maternal inheritance of organellar genomes which eliminates the threat of transgene escape through pollen. It is well established that exposure to virtual motion environments (VME) can elicit postural instability (PI) in addition to motion sickness (MS). While research has found sex differences in motion sickness, the results of experimental studies are equivocal regarding these differences, and previous studies utilizing VME have failed to address the factor of sex differences in terms of hormonal fluctuations, which may also be instrumental in behavioral responses to VME, such as PI. Research on the various subtypes of aggression has documented differences in the experience of anger and the expression of angry aggression. Mixed proactive and reactive aggressive individuals exhibit reactive aggression but, unlike reactive aggressive individuals, fail to exhibit angry expressions or physiological arousal. Similar to the proactive group, individuals with psychopathic traits have been found to exhibit emotional underreactivity, and physiological underarousal, while still exhibiting reactive aggression. The present study examined 85 boys (ages 13 to 18) from a detention center. There is a growing body of research suggesting that the presence of psychopathic traits, and more specifically, callous-unemotional traits in youth, may constitute a distinct developmental pathway to aggressive behavior. However, ethnic groups are understudied in this literature such that it is unclear whether the correlates of psychopathic traits (i.e., violence, aggression, emotional processing deficits) are equally associated with these traits across different ethnic groups. Also, most theories on the development of psychopathy have provided biologically-based explanations for the cognitive-affective deficits that are considered to be core features of psychopathy. There is a strong market demand for enantiomerically pure drugs. One solution to this problem is to develop a simple methodology for transferring synthetically designed racemic drugs into optically pure ones. Many synthetic drugs are by nature amides, therefore, amino acid based models for transformation of racemates into optically pure compounds were selected for this study. Formation of self-assembly molecular aggregates of properly modified amino acids was observed with and without the presence of cyclodextrins. The Experience Of Wellness For Counselor Education Doctoral Students Who Are Mothers, Latoya Pierce

This is a phenomenological study on the experience of wellness of counselor education students who are mothers. The study used seven participants in two rounds of interviews and one focus group. Participants were of varying stages of motherhood and at different points in their doctoral journey. Findings included participants' views of motherhood and womanhood, sacrifices and rewards, counselor education program support, wellness, and dissonance of multiple roles. Findings were compared within and across cases using themes and categories. Suggestions for further research are made as well as implications for this population and counselor education.

This paper describes a low cost hyper-spectral mission based around the CHRIS instrument that has been developed at Sira Technology Ltd. The CHRIS instrument is flying on the ESA PROBA platform, a small agile satellite of the 100kg class, which was launch in October 2001. The instrument typically acquires more than 300 hyper-spectral images each year via two European ground stations. Today this instrument provides the highest sampling capability of any space-borne hyper-spectral instrument. The main purpose of the instrument is to provide images of land areas, although the applications have extended to include coastal monitoring. The platform provides pointing …

G protein betagamma subunits associate with many binding partners in cellular signaling cascades. In previous work, we used random-peptide phage display screening to identify a diverse family of peptides that bound to a common surface on Gbetagamma subunits and blocked a subset of Gbetagamma effectors. Later studies showed that one of the peptides caused G protein activation through a novel Gbetagamma-dependent, nucleotide exchange-independent mechanism. Here we report the X-ray crystal structure of Gbeta(1)gamma(2) bound to this peptide, SIGK (SIGKAFKILGYPDYD), at 2.7 A resolution. SIGK forms a helical structure that binds the same face of Gbeta(1) as the switch II region …

Fatigue affects 60-100% of all cancer patients, is difficult to manage, and can have a profound impact on everyday functioning and quality of life. Though seemingly counterintuitive, exercise has emerged as a promising intervention for the management of cancer related fatigue (CRF). Current research predominantly involves individual, home-based exercise programs with few studies exploring other modes of exercise delivery. Simultaneously testing multiple hypotheses is important in high-dimensional biological studies. In these situations, one is often interested in controlling the Type-I error rate, such as the proportion of false positives to total rejections (TPPFP) at a specific level, alpha. This article will present an application of the E-Bayes/Bootstrap TPPFP procedure, presented in van der Laan et al. (2005), which controls the tail probability of the proportion of false positives (TPPFP), on two biological datasets. Simulated Landsat reflectance spectra of soil samples were compared to actual Landsat radiance values of soils in two fields (1 and 3) near Vance, Mississippi. The simulated reflectance spectra were calculated by combining Landsat spectral sensitivity with laboratory-based spectrophotometer reflectance values. The actual radiance data were obtained by extracting pixel values from Landsat images. Simple linear regression (SLR) yielded significant linear relationships for 1997 field-1 and 2001 field-3 data. Multiple linear regression (MLR) and weighted linear regression (WLR), which indirectly accounted for moisture content and spatial resolution, respectively, yielded improvement in R2 for most of the studied bands. We address the problem of learning discrete hidden Markov models from very long sequences of observations. Incremental versions of the Baum-Welch algorithm that approximate the beta-values used in the backward procedure are commonly used for this problem since their memory complexity is independent of the sequence length. However, traditional approaches have two main disadvantages: the approximation of the beta-values deviates far from the real values, and the learning algorithm requires previous knowledge of the topology of the model. As a result of the EPA?s Disinfection Byproduct Rule, the Northeast Mississippi Regional Water Supply District requested that the Environmental Technology and Applications Laboratory at Mississippi State University conduct a study to develop techniques to comply with new TOC regulations. This study involved the use of jar testing and Enhanced Coagulation in a laboratory setting over a period of twelve months to optimize the various coagulants evaluated in this study. Graph search is used in many areas of computer science. It is well-known that the scalability of graph-search algorithms such as A* is limited by their memory requirements. In this dissertation, I describe three complementary strategies for reducing the memory requirements of graph-search algorithms, especially for multiple sequence alignment (a central problem in computational molecular biology). These search strategies dramatically increase the range and difficulty of multiple sequence alignment problems that can be solved. Diagnostic and sampling practices documented in studies of participants with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Korean journals were investigated. A reliable coding system was used under the supervision of a Korean psychology professor to analyze the diagnostic and sampling documentation practices in articles from high impact Korean journals. Interrater agreement was 88%. Articles in the Korean Journal of Clinical Psychology and the Journal of Korean Neuropsychiatry Association were reviewed and compared with one another and with archival data (Hartley, 2003) from leading American journals. Dramatic alterations have occurred on agricultural landscapes throughout North America, reducing the quantities of herbaceous habitat that once dominated field margins. A concomitant decrease of grassland bird populations paralleled these modifications. Conservation buffers, in the form of field borders, are a method of habitat establishment that effectively balances wildlife and landowner needs. Recent popularity of field borders led to their establishment throughout the southeastern US despite a paucity of knowledge regarding avian response to management regimes. This study demonstrated the presence of hyperthermophilic organisms in the upper Jurassic Smackover formation in Womack Hills, AL. Evidence for the presence of these organisms was shown by the cultivation of an aerobic and an anaerobic, oil-degrading hyperthermophilic culture from the cuttings of an oil well in the Jurassic Smackover at 90¢ªC. Viability of microorganisms in the formation was established through electron microscopy, by carbon dioxide production, and by protein production during incubation in medium at 90¢ªC.
