New Records Of Xorides (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Xoridinae) From Florida, Charles S. Porter

Abstract:
Xorides albopictus (Cresson) and Xorides calidus (Provancher) are recorded for the first time from Florida. New Florida records are given for Xorides semirufus Townes, previously known only from the holotype female collected near Archer in Alachua County in 1953. A key is provided to the Florida species of Xorides. A photograph of X. semirufus is included.

Prairie Apioninae (Coleoptera: Brentidae) Of Wisconsin: Collections And Distributions, Scott B. Sauer

Two recent invertebrate collections from Wisconsin prairies have yielded large numbers of Apioninae. These collections and published literature demonstrate that certain members are important components of the prairie biotic community. This paper examines the collections, associated food plants, and prevalence of prairie Apioninae in Wisconsin.

The Cerulean Warbler is a species of high conservation concern because of apparent long-term declines throughout its breeding range (Hamel 2000a, Hamel et al. 2004, Sauer et al. 2005) and threats to and reduction of breeding and wintering habitat (Hamel et al. 2004, Rick et al. 2004). Nebraska has traditionally been at the western periphery of the species' breeding range, where it is restricted to mature woodlands in the Missouri River Valley (Sharpe et al. 2001, Mollhoff 2001). Genetic algorithms are powerful tools for k-nearest neighbors classifier optimization. While traditional knn classification techniques typically employ Euclidian distance to assess pattern similarity, other measures may also be utilized. Previous research demonstrates that GAs can improve predictive accuracy by searching for optimal feature weights and offsets for a cosine similarity-based knn classifier. GA-selected weights determine the classification relevance of each feature, while offsets provide alternative points of reference when assessing angular similarity. Such optimized classifiers perform competitively with other contemporary classification techniques. Charge-Exchange-Produced K -Shell X-Ray Emission From Ar¹⁶⁺ In A Tokamak Plasma With Neutral-Beam Injection, P. Beiersdorfer, M. Bitter, M. Marion, Ronald E. Olson

High-resolution spectroscopy of a hot tokamak plasma seeded with argon ions and interacting with an energetic, short-pulse neutral hydrogen beam was used to obtain a high-resolution K -shell x-ray spectrum formed solely by charge exchange. The observed K -shell emission of Ar16+ is dominated by the intercombination and forbidden lines, providing clear signatures of charge exchange. Results from an ab initio atomic cascade model provide excellent agreement, validating a semiclassical approach for calculating charge-exchange cross sections.

The suitability of Glass Ionomer Cements (GICs) for use in orthopaedics is retarded by the presence in the glass phase of aluminium, a neurotoxin. Unfortunately, the aluminium ion plays an integral role in the setting process of a GIC and its absence is likely to hinder cement formation. However, zinc oxide, a bacteriocide, can act both as a network modifying oxide and an intermediate oxide in a similar fashion to alumina and so ternary systems based on zinc silicates often have extensive regions of glass formation. Modulation Of Synaptic Function In Retinal Amacrine Cells, Brian K. Hoffpauir, Evanna L. Gleason

Amacrine cells are interneurons that have diverse functions in retinal signal processing. In order to study signaling and modulation in retinal amacrine cells, we employ a simplified culture system containing identifiable GABAergic amacrine cells. Immunocytochemistry experiments indicate that GABAergic amacrine cells express metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5), a group I mGluR usually linked to the IP3 signaling pathway. Ca2+ imaging experiments using an mGluR5-specific agonist indicate that these receptors are functional and when activated, can stimulate temporally diverse Ca2+ elevations. To begin to establish the role of these receptors in modulating amacrine cell function, we have used electrophysiological methods to …

Recurrent fires are integral to the function of many ecosystems worldwide. The management of fire-frequented ecosystems requires the application of fire at the appropriate frequency and seasonally, but establishing the natural fire regime for an ecosystem can be problematic. Historical records of fires are often not available, and surrogates for past fires may not exist. We suggest that the relationship between climate and fire can provide an alternative means for inferring past fire regimes in some ecosystems. © 2005 Society for Ecological Restoration International.

Protein Impregnated Polymer (Pip) Film Infrared Sensor Using Suspended Microelectromechanical Systems (Mems) Pixels, Tetsuo Kaieda

The Air Force Research Laboratory Materials and Manufacturing Directorate have developed a novel protein impregnated polymer (PIP) suspension that changes resistivity as a function of absorbed infrared radiation. Due to this property, the PIP is a potential material for use as an uncooled bolometer, or thermal sensor. In this research, a thermally-isolated pixel design, sensor characterization methods, and sensor fabrication and processing steps were developed. To create a microbolometer, the PIP was applied to two prototype micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) surface micro-machined structures. The optimal employment of autonomous search and destroy vehicles is addressed. The results apply to air, land, or water vehicles with 1, k, or infinite warheads. The specific scenarios considered involve an air vehicle searching a battle space for stationary targets in the presence of false targets. Encounters are modeled with uniform, Poisson, and normal distributions. Linear and circular search patterns are examined. All relevant parameters are extracted from intelligence information, the sensor performance specification, and the air vehicle performance specification. Analysis Of The Distribution And Diversity In Recent Hawaiian Volcanic Deposits Of A Putative Carbon Monoxide Dehydrogenase Large Subunit Gene, Kari E. Dunfield, Gary M. King

A putative carbon monoxide dehydrogenase large subunit gene (BMS putative coxL) was amplified from genomic DNA extracts of four recent (42-300 year old) Hawaiian volcanic deposits by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Sequence databases derived from clone libraries constructed using PCR products were analysed phylogenetically and statistically. These analyses indicated that each of the deposits supported distinct BMS putative coxL gene assemblages. Statistical analyses also showed that the youngest deposit (42 years old) contained the least diverse sequences (P < 0.05), but that diversity did not vary significantly among three older deposits with ages from about 108-300 years. Although diversity indices did not vary among the older deposits, mismatch analyses suggested population structures increased in complexity with increasing deposit age. At each of the sites, most of the clone sequences appeared to originate from Proteobacteria not currently represented in culture or recognized as CO oxidizers. © 2005 Society for Applied Microbiology and Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

The 27 extant species of sturgeons and paddlefishes (Order Acipenseriformes) represent a unique and relict lineage of fishes. Producers of coveted black caviar, sturgeons are one of the most valuable wildlife commodities on earth. The group is among the most endangered fishes with all species listed under Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Appendix I (two species) or II (25 species), only two species considered Lower Risk by IUCN, four of the nine US taxa and one Caspian species protected under the Endangered Species Act, and local extinctions recorded for 19 of 27 species. CAEPR Reports

In 2004 and 2005 we gathered information on how boarding school and boarding home experiences affected individual Alaska Natives, their families, and communities. From the early 1900s to the 1970s Alaska Natives were taken from rural communities that lacked either primary or secondary schools and sent to boarding schools run by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), by private churches or, later, by Alaska’s state government. Some were also sent to boarding homes to attend school in urban places. We interviewed 61 Alaska Native adults who attended boarding schools or participated in the urban boarding home program from the …
