After careful consideration of the South Coast Recreational Fishing Working Group’s recommendations and the wide range of issues raised in submissions, I have made my decisions in respect to the future management arrangements for recreational fishing in South Coast Region. I believe the new management arrangements which will be implemented in 1 January 2006 will go a long way to protecting recreational fishing quality and meeting the long term needs for the sustainable management of recreational fishing. While some of the factors threatening the future of the marron fishery can be managed via traditional fisheries controls, many fall outside of the Department of Fisheries’ jurisdiction and require a ‘whole of Government’ approach to management. To help ensure a quality future for the recreational marron fishery, the Recreational Freshwater Fisheries Stakeholder Sub-committee (RFFSS) has now developed a set of draft management proposals designed to form the basis of a five-year management plan for the fishery.

This report includes information on sustainability and sustainable harvest levels for Western Australian abalone stocks as required under the IFM policy. It also contains additional information on the current state of knowledge of the abalone resource, which provides a broader context for considering allocations. In particular, detailed information is provided on the Roe’s abalone resource in the Perth metropolitan area (commercial Area 7/recreational West Coast Zone).

Pacific Studies

Patterns of Culture and Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies, published a year apart, have a startlingly parallel structure. Discussions of anthropological method open both; the question of the individual and deviance closes both. The triad of cultures in each book is arranged in the order of "the good, the bad, and the inverted." The first culture emphasizes cooperation and nurturance, the second competition and discord. The third culture in each inverts some feature of Western society, either in the economic realm (Kwakiutl) or in that of gendered personality (Tchambuli). The idea of solitude is no stranger to outdoor enthusiasts. Its virtues have been heralded for millennia. Clerics, monks, priests, and laity from numerous religions and cultural traditions have found value in solitude since the beginnings of recorded history. Modern Transcendentalists, most notably Thoreau and Emerson, praised solitude as a means to escape the swelling tide of civilization. Granted, most conscientious proponents of solitude also warn of its excess, but overwhelmingly, the idea of solitude is historically one that pulls at the inner yearnings of the human heart. Eco, the “clean, green pest controller with a biological solution to every problem” works through a series of problems from rats and snails to air pollution using environmentally friendly means. This five minute short, “The Eco Van Comes Clean” really begins when Eco’s van and a VW Beetle stuck on the tracks get an untimely redesign by a passing train. We have only a vague idea of precisely how protein sequences evolve in the context of protein structure and function. This is primarily because structural and functional contexts are not easily predictable from the primary sequence, and evaluating patterns of evolution at individual residue positions is also difficult. As a result of increasing biodiversity in genomics studies, progress is being made in detecting context-dependent variation in substitution processes, but it remains unclear exactly what context-dependent patterns we should be looking for. The Australian pearling industry referred to in this document relates to the Pinctada maxima pearl oyster fishery, the overwhelming majority of which operates in Western Australia and Northern Territory.

The key policy focus was to achieve an alternative supply of shell upon which to conduct the pearl culture process and to develop grow-out competence within the Western Australian pearling industry from the use of hatchery bred pearl oyster spat. It was clearly recognised that it was not economically justifiable for all licensees to have their own hatchery operation but it was felt that all licensees should have the ability to …

Participants at the 2005-2006 Athenaeum examined recent Minnesota politics; the history and culture of Kaliningrad, Russia; the experiences gained in the Peace Corp and wildlife refuges of the Upper Mississippi River. There was also a musical performance by the WSU Faculty Jazz Ensemble and literature readings by various WSU faculty.
