Salinity (Conductivity) Sensor Based On Parallel Plate Capacitors, Shreyas Bhat Oct 2005

Salinity (Conductivity) Sensor Based On Parallel Plate Capacitors, Shreyas Bhat

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This work is aimed at developing a high sensitivity salinity (conductivity) sensor for marine applications. The principle of sensing involves the use of parallel plate capacitors, which minimizes the proximity effects associated with inductive measurement techniques. The barrier properties of two different materials, AZ5214 and Honeywell's ACCUFLO T3027, were investigated for use as the insulation layer for the sensor. Impedance analysis performed on the two coatings using Agilent's 4924A Precision Impedance Analyzer served to prove that ACCUFLO was a better dielectric material for this application when compared to AZ5214.
Two separate detection circuits have been proposed for the salinity sensor. …

On The Green Vol. 36 No. 2 October 21, 2005, Gallaudet University

2001-2010

On the Green is an internal publication of Gallaudet College, which later became Gallaudet University. It notified employees of updates around the campus and in the broader community, including new construction and the establishment of new academic programs. Running until 2010, it was supplanted by various forms of online mass communications across multiple audiences.

A Method Of Precise Mrna/Dna Homology-Based Gene Structure Prediction, Alexander Churbanov, Mark Pauley, Daniel Quest, Hesham Ali Oct 2005

A Method Of Precise Mrna/Dna Homology-Based Gene Structure Prediction, Alexander Churbanov, Mark Pauley, Daniel Quest, Hesham Ali

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Background: Accurate and automatic gene finding and structural prediction is a common problem in bioinformatics, and applications need to be capable of handling non-canonical splice sites, microexons and partial gene structure predictions that span across several genomic clones.

Results: We present a mRNA/DNA homology based gene structure prediction tool, GIGOgene. We use a new affine gap penalty splice-enhanced global alignment algorithm running in linear memory for a high quality annotation of splice sites. Our tool includes a novel algorithm to assemble partial gene structure predictions using interval graphs. GIGOgene exhibited a sensitivity of 99.08% and a specificity of 99.98% on …

Self-Assembly Of Nanoparticles On Live Bacterium: An Avenue To Fabricate Electronic Devices, Vikas Berry, Ravi F. Saraf Oct 2005

Self-Assembly Of Nanoparticles On Live Bacterium: An Avenue To Fabricate Electronic Devices, Vikas Berry, Ravi F. Saraf

Papers in Nanotechnology

Recently, hybrid structures of microorganisms with inorganic nanoscale moieties have received great interest due to their potential in fabricating electronic systems. Electronic properties of metal nanoparticles, due to single electron transport of current[1], make them ideal material for nanodevices. Concomitantly, the nanostructure of microorganisms such as bacteria[2], viruses[3;4] and yeast[5] are attractive scaffolds for nanoparticle templating due to surface charge and biological affinities for specific molecules [2-7]. However, the key challenges in building hybrid devices are patterning nanostructures without destroying the biological construct of the microorganism and achieving active integration of biological response to the electrical transport in nanoparticle device. …

A Role For Airway Remodeling During Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection, David Becnel, Dahui You, Joshua Erskin, Dawn M. Dimina, Stephania A. Cormier

Faculty Publications

Background: Severe respiratory syncytial virus infection (RSV) during infancy has been shown to be a major risk factor for the development of subsequent wheeze. However, the reasons for this link remain unclear. The objective of this research was to determine the consequences of early exposure to RSV and allergen in the development of subsequent airway hyperreactivity (AHR) using a developmental time point in the mouse that parallels that of the human neonate. Methods: Weanling mice were sensitized and challeged with ovalbumin (Ova) and/or infected with RSV. Eight days after the last allergen challenge, various pathophysiological endpoints were examined. Results: AHR …

Utah Resource Assessment, Utah Association Of Conservation Districts, Utah Department Of Agriculture And Food, Natural Resource Conservation Service

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Located in the Rocky Mountain Region, Utah derives its name from the Native American Ute tribe and means “people of the mountains”. Utah is 84,900 square miles and is ranked the 11th largest state (in terms of square miles) in the US. As hosts of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, Utah boasts the “greatest snow on earth” and is the home of 18 colorful National Parks and monuments. Utah's peaks are, on average, the tallest in the country and create great contrasts that range from the snow covered peaks of the Uinta Range in the east, to the renowned natural …

Synthesis And Structure-Activity Relationships Of Ss- And A-Piperidine Sulphone Hydroxamic Acid Matrix Metalloproteinase Inhibitors With Oral Antitumor Efficacy, Daniel Becker, Clara I. Villamil, Thomas E. Barta, Louis J. Bedell Oct 2005

Synthesis And Structure-Activity Relationships Of Ss- And A-Piperidine Sulphone Hydroxamic Acid Matrix Metalloproteinase Inhibitors With Oral Antitumor Efficacy, Daniel Becker, Clara I. Villamil, Thomas E. Barta, Louis J. Bedell

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

α-Piperidine-β-sulfone hydroxamate derivatives were explored that are potent for matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2, -9, and -13 and are sparing of MMP-1. The investigation of the β-sulfones subsequently led to the discovery of hitherto unknown α-sulfone hydroxamates that are superior to the corresponding β-sulfones in potency for target MMPs, selectivity vs MMP-1, and exposure when dosed orally. α-Piperidine-α-sulfone hydroxamate 35f (SC-276) was advanced through antitumor and antiangiogenesis assays and was selected for development. Compound 35f demonstrates excellent antitumor activity vs MX-1 breast tumor in mice when dosed orally as monotherapy or in combination with paclitaxel.
