Conjugated Linoleic Acid: Chemical Structure, Sources And Biological Properties, Rahi̇m Aydin

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a group of geometrical and positional isomers of linoleic acid (C18:2, cis-9, cis-12). In contrast to linoleic acid, double bonds in CLA are usually located at positions 9 and 11 or 10 and 12 and each double bond can be either in the cis or trans configuration. Meat and dairy products from ruminant animals (such as milk, butter, yogurt and cheese) are the principal natural sources of CLA in the human diet. Egg and meat products from poultry contain less CLA than meat from ruminant animals (0.6 and 0.9 mg/g fat vs. 2.9 to 5.6 …

Some Biological Characteristics Of The Tub Gurnard, Chelidonichthys Lucernus (Linnaeus, 1758) In The Sea Of Marmara, Lütfi̇ye Eryilmaz, Nuretti̇n Meri̇ç

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The biology of the tub gurnard, Chelidonichthys lucernus (Linnaeus, 1758), has been studied on data collected between November 1996 and November 1997 from the Sea of Marmara. Totally, 224 tub gurnards were sampled. The age, growth, length-weight relationship, condition factor, male to female ratio, first sexual maturity age, length and reproduction period were examined. The age composition of samples ranged between 1 and 6 years. Total length ranged between 12.3 and 41.5 cm, while weight varied from 15 to 617 g. The total length-weight relationship was estimated as W=0.0092L^{3.019}. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation were: L_{\infity} = …

Reproductive Biology Of The Common Cuttlefish Sepia Officinalis L. (Sepiida: Cephalopoda) In The Aegean Sea, Bahadir Önsoy, Alp Salman

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) is known as one of the economically important species in the classis Cephalopoda. In this study, from October 2000 to April 2002, 674 cuttlefish were collected monthly from the surroundings of Homa lagoon (in the Aegean Sea). In order to determine reproductive behaviors and spawning season of S. officinalis species, the gonad stages of both sexes and the seasonal gonadosomatic index values were determined. It was observed that the spawning period of S. officinalis covers the whole year with two maximum peaks in March and June.

In this study, carried out between November 2000 and October 2001, the annual spawning period, first maturity length, length frequency distribution and length/weight relationship of Parapenaeus longirostris that inhabit most commonly the Sea of Marmara were investigated. Analysis of the data obtained from this study revealed that although the mature individuals with fully developed eggs were found almost every month throughout the year, the highest gonadosomatic index values were obtained in September, October, December, April and May. To the extent that the intervention in Iraq in 2003 is regarded as an act of preemptive self-defense, the aftermath of that intervention may presage an era where states resist resorting to large-scale preemptive self-defense. The intervention in Iraq highlighted considerable policy difficulties with the resort to preemptive self-defense: an inability to attract allies; the dangers of faulty intelligence regarding a foreign state's weapons programs and relations with terrorist groups; the political, economic and human costs in pursuing wars of choice; and the resistance of a local populace or radicalized factions to what is viewed as an unwarranted foreign invasion …

A total of 1096 spotted flounder (Citharus linguatula Linnaeus, 1758) were caught in Edremit Bay from September 1998 to September 2000. Length-weight relationships, age, growth, mortality and sex ratio of the samples were investigated. Within the population of this species, most of the individuals in our samples ranged from 100 to 160 mm (69.63%), the minimum and maximum total lengths of the specimens being 69 and 222 mm, respectively. Some biological characteristics and the stock size of the pike (Esox lucius L., 1758) population in Lake Karamık were investigated between March 2002 and February 2003. The percentages of males and females in the population were 67.2% and 32.8%, respectively. Although fish samples ranged in age group from I to VII and from 15 to 66 cm in fork length, most of them were in age groups I-II and had fork lengths of 20-29 cm. The mean condition factor of the pike population was 0.812. In the population, the condition factors of females were higher than those of males. The …

Recent interest in Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have revived research on the performance of airfoils at relatively low Reynolds numbers. A common problem with low Reynolds number flow is that separation is almost inevitable without the application of some means of flow control, but understanding the nature of the separated flow is critical to designing an optimal flow control system. The current research presents results from a joint effort coupling numerical simulation and wind tunnel testing to investigate this flow regime. Xeric limestone prairies (XLPs) are open, nonforested communities dominatedby native, C4 perennial grasses. In eastern United States, they occur on shallow, rockycalcareous soils in various physiographic provinces from Missouri and Pennsylvaniasouth to Arkansas and Georgia. Floristic, vegetation, and physical environmental datawere collected from 18 XLPs in Kentucky and used in conjunction with data collected inother studies to provide a synthesis for XLP vegetation in eastern United States and acomparison of this vegetation type with limestone cedar glades and deep-soil barrens.XLPs occur on 33 soil series in five orders (Alfisols, Mollisols, Ultisols, Inceptisols, andVertisols) and on limestone, dolomite, and calcareous shale …

Cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A), a xenobiotic metabolizing enzyme found in allvertebrates, is highly induced following exposure to a number of organic contaminants.Several populations of teleosts residing in highly contaminated areas have been found toexhibit resistance to the toxic effects of contaminants, a condition characterized byreduced expression of CYP1A.Within this work I demonstrated that expression of CYP1A mRNA, protein, andactivity in caged rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was an effective biomarker ofpolychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination. Furthermore, through the use of bothlaboratory and field studies, I demonstrated that several species inhabiting a PCBcontaminated site exhibited either acquired (Ameiurus natalis) or natural (Lepomiscyanellus) resistance to …

This dissertation details three studies dealing with the manipulation of nucleicacids. In the first investigation, each of the four natural nucleobases were analyzed for theability to serve as a universal template at the ligation junction of a T4 DNA ligasereaction. This resulted in the first instance of sequence-independent ligation catalyzed byany DNA ligase. Although all of the nucleobases display universal templatingcapabilities, thymidine and guanosine provided the most effective results. In addition,lowered MgCl2 and ATP concentrations, as well as the inclusion of DMSO, also aided inthe sequence-independent ligation reported here. The gene encoding the small subunit of the respiratory arsenate reductase (arrB) from the haloalkaliphilic low G+C Gram positive bacterium Bacillus selenitireducens strain MLS-10 was amplified by PCR, cloned and sequenced. The amplicon was larger (~ 1.2 kb) than predicted indicating that the degenerate reverse primer hybridized to a region further down stream. The amplicon contained all of arrB and the 5'end of another open reading frame. The arrB (693 bp) predicts a 26.3 kDa protein of 230 amino acids with a pI of 5.5 and four iron-sulfur binding domains. The protein shares a 50% identity and 66% similarity with …

Interracial marriage remains one of the most emotionally charged issues in the troubled racial history of the United States. Love in Black and White: The Triumph of Love over Prejudice and Taboo is Mark and Gail Mathabane's relatively popular memoir of their interracial marriage. Using this text as a means of access to the discourses surrounding interracial marriage in the post-Civil Rights era, this study applies the key Foucauldian concepts of discourse, power, subjectivity, and critique to an interpretation of this text in relation to its sociohistorical context.
