Body size has long been hypothesized to play a major role in community structure and dynamics. Two general hypotheses exist for how resources are distributed among body sizes: (1) resources are equally available and uniformly utilized across body sizes and (2) resources are differentially available to organisms of different body sizes, resulting in a nonuniform or modal distribution. It has also been predicted that the distri-bution of body sizes of species in a community should reflect the underlying availability of resources, with the emergence of aggregations of species around specific body sizes. Intra-Guild Compensation Regulatesspecies Richness In Desert Rodents, J. Goheen, Ethan P. White, S.K. Morgan Ernest, J. H. Brown

Evidence from numerous studies suggests that species richness is an emergent property of local communities. The maintenance of species richness, despite changes in species composition and environmental conditions, requires compensatory colonization and extinction events with species coming from a regional pool. Using long-term data from a rodent community in the Chihuahuan Desert, we use randomization methods to test the null hypothesis that changes in species richness occur randomly. We find that the dynamics of species richness differ significantly from a random process, and that these nonrandom dynamics occur largely within the most speciose guild. Comparative Studies Of Sperm Cryopreservation Of Diploid And Tetraploid Pacific Oysters, Qiaoxiang Dong

This dissertation addressed comparative studies of sperm cryopreservation of diploid and tetraploid Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, with an emphasis on the development of standardized and optimized protocols. This includes comparative ultrastructural differences between sperm from diploid and tetraploid oysters, methods for the rapid estimation of sperm concentration, optimization of cryopreservation, and evaluation of the mechanisms for sperm agglutination (formation of clumps or elongated "noodles") in thawed samples. Currently, cryopreserved sperm has not been commercialized in any aquatic species, and standardization and optimization could greatly benefit the potential commercialization of its use. Populations transferred by rainfall runoff can have many adverse effects livings and people. Treatment of rainfall-runoff continues to pose unique challenges due to the unsteady nature of processes including mobilization, partitioning and transport of heavy metals as well as other constituent loads. BMPs that incorporate heavy metal removal are generating more attention as the nature of stormwater is better understood. This dissertation focused on metal partitioning and speciation in rainfall-runoff through the in-situ Partial Exfiltration Reactor (PER) and exposed to various redox circumstances, and metal removal by sorptive engineered manganese oxides coated media. Reinforcement occurs when natural selection strengthens behavioral discrimination to prevent costly interpopulation matings, such as when matings produce sterile hybrids. This evolutionary process can complete speciation, thereby providing a direct link between Darwin’s theory of natural selection and the origin of new species. My dissertation presents the first study on the genetics of reinforcement. This study is framed in a conceptual body that explains how genomic architecture, selection and recombination, interact to facilitate divergence in the presence of gene flow. In addition, in my dissertation I produced a dense recombination map for D. pseudoobscura, which together with the genome sequence …

Long INterspersed Elements (LINEs or L1)and Short INterspersed Elements (SINEs) have played a critical role in shaping the human genomic landscape, making up about 33% of the human genomic mass. In this work, preTa, an L1 subfamily and the Ya-lineage of Alu SINEs were examined to determine their impact on the human genomic architecture and diversity. We analyzed 362 preTa L1 elements and 2318 Ya lineage Alu elements using computational methods and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. Adequate provision of soy isoflavone and protein in soybean products is essential in meeting the soy health claim and the promotion of a healthy product. Commercial soymilks contain inadequate amounts of protein and isoflavone to meet the FDA recommended 25g and 40-50mg/day level, respectively, in 1-2 servings. This research study set out to investigate the possibility of producing a protein-isoflavone enriched (PIE) soymilk by incorporating soy germ in soymilk to provide the recommended FDA level in 1-2 servings. Nature has provided a vast number of compounds that have medicinal application. The use of these compounds provided by nature however, is limited by the amount of a specific compound that nature provides. The synthesis of these molecules and their derivatives provides an even greater number of compounds for biological screening. Various pyrroles, the heterocyclic building blocks of porphyrins, can be prepared synthetically over several steps. The implementation of carboranes on pyrrole rings intrinsically provides substrates that can be converted into porphyrins bearing carborane substituents. A study of the effects of system boundaries on bistable front propagation in nonequilibrium reaction-diffusion systems is presented. Two model partial differential equations displaying bistable fronts, with distinct experimental motivations and mathematical structure, are examined in detail utilizing simulations and perturbation techniques. We see that propagating fronts in both models bounce, trap, pin, or oscillate at the boundary, contingent on the imposed boundary condition, initial front speed and distance from the boundary. The similarities in front boundary interactions in these two models is traced to the fact that they display the same front instability (Ising-Bloch bifurcation) that controls the speed …

Although plants are envisioned to play a central role in life support systems for future long-duration space travel, plant growth in space has been problematic due to horticultural problems of nutrient delivery and gas resupply posed by the weightless environment. Iterative improvement in hardware designed for growth of plants on orbital platforms now provides confidence that plants can perform well in microgravity, enabling investigation of their nutritional characteristics. Plants of B. rapa (cv. Astroplants) were grown in the Biomass Production System on the International Space Station. Freshwater ecosystems, particularly streams and rivers, have been the subject of prodigious research. Unfortunately, in comparison to neighboring regions, the Gulf of Mexico coastal plain has not received as much attention. Therefore, I collected data on the macroinvertebrates of these streams to begin the understanding of the relationships between community structure and environmental characteristics. In contrast to the hypothesized ancestral streams of these macroinvertebrates, coastal plain streams are commonly devoid of rocks leaving only woody debris as usable hard substrates and are typically lower in dissolved oxygen.
