This paper proposes a method to improve landscape-pollution interaction regression models through the inclusion of a variable that describes the spatial distribution of a land type with respect to the pattern of runoff within a drainage catchment. The proposed index is used as an independent variable to enhance the strength, as quantified by R² values, of regression relationships between empirical observations of in-stream pollutant concentrations and land type by considering the spatial distribution of key land-type categories within the sample point’s drainage area. A metastable helium molecule is produced in a helium nanodroplet by electron bombardment. The molecule, identified as the long lived triplet state ([special characters omitted]), is found to reside on the surface of the droplet. Upon absorbing an infrared photon, it becomes detached from the surface of the droplet. The molecule is subsequently detected when it releases a secondary electron by striking a metal surface in the detector region. Early Blue Crab Recruitment To Alternative Nursery Habitats In Mississippi, Usa, Chet R. Rakocinski, Donna Drury Mccall

Although seagrass in the lower segments of estuaries provides good nursery habitat for blue crabs, the role of alternative inshore habitats for early blue crab recruitment is not well-known. Using suction sampling, we examined the recruitment dynamics of early blue crabs (Callinectes spp.) over a 10-wk study period at 7 sites representing potential nursery habitats, including 2 marsh edge sites, 2 subtidal unvegetated sites adjacent to salt marsh, 2 subtidal unvegetated sites adjacent to developed marsh, and 1 upestuary subtidal vegetated site. Abundances of small (< 6.0 mm CW) and large (&GE; 6.0 mm) juvenile crabs varied over the study period, mainly reflecting two monthly pulses of small crabs coinciding with the new moon phase. Early crabs were Significantly more abundant from structured habitats than from subtidal unvegetated habitat; although small crabs were moderately abundant at subtidal unvegetated sites situated lower in the estuary. Large crabs were not abundant from subtidal unvegetated sites; whereas large crabs were abundant from sites with structured habitat. Subtidal unvegetated sites were characterized by crab size-distributions with single modes representing postsettlement crabs and with few large crabs; whereas structured habitats contained relatively more large crabs. However, crab size-distributions varied among structured habitats. Spatio-temporal variation in the early recruitment dynamics of blue crabs reflected temporal changes, such as lunar periodicity; landscape effects, such as proximity to currents; and habitat effects.

Objective: To determine if approximate entropy (ApEn), a regularity statistic from non-linear dynamics, could detect changes in postural control during quiet standing in athletes with normal postural stability after cerebral concussion.

Methods: The study was a retrospective, case series analysis of centre of pressure (COP) data collected during the Sensory Organization Test (SOT) from NCAA Division I (USA) athletes prior to and within 48 h after injury. Subjects were 21 male and six female athletes from a variety of sports who sustained a cerebral concussion between 1997 and 2003. After injury, athletes displayed normal postural stability equivalent to preseason levels. …

The purpose of this research was to assess the needs of Eastern Illinois University students regarding nutrition-related topics of concern and programming methods. Four hundred ninety-two students and four health professionals participated. The results indicate that students consume grains and vegetables in less than recommended amounts, fruits and dairy products within the recommended amounts, and meats, sweets, oils, and fats, and alcohol in excess. Nutritional issues affecting these students include management of weight, consumption of alcohol, and low intakes of iron, folate, and vitamin C. Much of the Midwest, as well as Illinois' landscape, has largely been transformed from its original habitat of prairie, savanna, wetlands, and forest into corn and soybean fields and urban areas. As a result, less than 1% of the original habitat in Illinois remains intact today. These modifications can lead to habitat fragmentation and affect riparian zone vegetation, which is an important link between the land-water interface and influences processes such as organic matter inputs and water temperature regimes. A conceptual model was developed and utilized to investigate the influence of land use/land cover on community metabolism as mediated by stream water chemistry, in an agricultural watershed in east-central Illinois. A suite of physical and chemical variables were sampled over a yearlong period at twelve sites across the Hurricane Creek Watershed. Community metabolism was determined at five of the sites during episodes of suitable hydrologic and weather conditions. Cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin are used clinically for treating some cancers, but are they are not the preferred treatment for breast cancer. The usefulness of these platinum-containing drugs is limited by poor concentration of the active platinum moiety within the tumor before dose-limiting side effects are reached. One way to selectively concentrate a platinum antitumor compound in breast cancer cells is to conjugate the platinum moiety via a malonate linkage to an estrogen which selectively binds to the estrogen receptor (ER) protein. 31P NMR spectroscopy was used to study freeze tolerance of the wood frog, R. sylvatica. Spectra were obtained of living whole body samples and isolated thigh muscle tissue. These results were compared to R. pipiens which is freeze sensitive. R. sylvatica was found to have significantly higher levels of glucose-6-phosphate and several phosphodiesters. Both seasonal and environmental stresses were studied to determine the effect of freezing conditions on the phosphorus compounds present in R. sylvatica. I believe Oppen's "objectivism" - coupled with a judicious use of deliberate ambiguity - nicely gets us past the postmodern insistence on the illusions of selfhood, reason, and order by insisting on the centrality of the perceiver/thinker amid the objective chaos of perceptions/ideas, while at the same time recognizing the multi-vocal construction of the perceiver/thinker. Through these short stories, many of the ritualistic practices of this particular Buddhist philosophy are exemplified, presenting a dire need for the reformation of the rituals which tend to genderize and politicize the spiritual realm. The current literature suggests that when students are engaged in metacognitive activities, such as self-assessment, self-explanation, monitoring, or revising; their learning is enhanced (Xiaodong, 2001). Further, feedback, an integral element of self-monitoring, has been shown to increase the effectiveness of self-monitoring by guiding students through tasks, delivering corrective feedback that helps the learner identify errors, and providing hints about how to correct the problem (Pintrich, 1995). This study is a comparison of students from two high schools in Illinois. It examines adolescents' perceptions of communication with their parents related to the topics of alcohol, drugs, sex, and suicide. Historically, School 1 is located in a county that has above average teen pregnancy rates. Traditionally, School 2 is located in a county with lower pregnancy rates than School 1. In addition to providing the groundwork for more detailed analysis of alcohol, drugs, sex, and suicide related to specific family communication styles and strategies, this study provides support for intervention programs that promote family communication. Chorda tympani nerve transection (CTX) results in morphological changes to fungiform papillae and associated taste buds. When transection occurs during neonatal development in the rat, the effects on fungiform taste bud and papillae structure are markedly more severe than observed following a comparable surgery in the adult rat. The present study examined the potential “sensitive period” for morphological modifications to tongue epithelium following CTX. Rats received unilateral transection at 65, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, or 5 days of age.
