Academic And Professional Integrity: New Snake Oil In Old Bottles?, Gordon A. Crews

Criminal Justice Faculty Research

This presentation was given in September of 2005 as Dr. Gordon A. Crews’ presidential address during his year as president of the Southern Criminal Justice Association. It is an overview of the issue of academic and professional integrity, or lack thereof, in higher education. The comparison of academics to “snake oil salesmen” of the past is the central focus of this presentation. The presentation also analyzes the issues of integrity and collegiality in the three traditional areas of academics’ professional lives: teaching, research, and service.

Correctional Officers’ Perceptions Of Equitable Treatment In The Masculinized Prison Environment, Marie L. Griffin, Gaylene Armstrong, John R. Hepburn Sep 2005

Correctional Officers’ Perceptions Of Equitable Treatment In The Masculinized Prison Environment, Marie L. Griffin, Gaylene Armstrong, John R. Hepburn

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Research suggests that employee perceptions of an organization’s support for policies that promote an equitable work environment may differ significantly by race and gender groups. This study examines such perceptual differences and their attitudinal effects on employee experiences within the unique context of a prison setting. Significant differences in correctional officer perceptions of policies are found to exist by race and gender groups. Contrary to expectations, all race and gender groups perceive strong organizational support for equal treatment policies. Moreover, the work experiences of White males are not negatively affected by perceptions of organizational support for equal treatment as had …

Psychological Patterns Among Roman Catholic Clergy Accused Of Sexual Misconduct, Thomas G. Plante, Arianna Aldridge

Psychology

Very few empirical research studies have been published on the psychological and personality functioning of clergy who engage in sexual misconduct in the Catholic Church. The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychological profiles of 21 Roman Catholic clergy who have confronted credible accusations of sexual misconduct. Relative to national norms, MMPI-2 results …

Tackling Employment Discrimination With Adr: Does Mediation Offer A Shield For The Haves Or Real Opportunity For The Have-Nots, Michael Z. Green Sep 2005

Tackling Employment Discrimination With Adr: Does Mediation Offer A Shield For The Haves Or Real Opportunity For The Have-Nots, Michael Z. Green

Faculty Scholarship

This paper explores the benefits of using mediation in addressing employment discrimination disputes. It highlights the difficulties for those who expect too much out of mediation by expecting it to transform relations while exposing concerns with those who limit mediation's potential by supporting mythical notions about mediators being neutral. The paper suggests that employers develop comprehensive conflict resolution systems and include mediation as a process that is case-specific and focused on the needs of all parties and not the needs of the mediator.
