Perceptions Of Attachment Style And Marital Quality In Midlife Marriage, Cody S. Hollist, Richard B. Miller Jan 2005

Perceptions Of Attachment Style And Marital Quality In Midlife Marriage, Cody S. Hollist, Richard B. Miller

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Based on attachment theory, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) theorizes that attachment styles influence marital quality. Although research supports this relationship among young couples, no research has examined attachment styles and marital quality in midlife marriages. We examined this issue using data from 429 married people between the ages of 40 and 50. Results indicated that insecure attachment styles were associated with marital quality, whereas secure attachment was not. These results suggest that EFT therapists can help midlife couples in distressed relationships move from insecure to secure attachment styles. However, the use of EFT to help these couples who have secure …

Learning To Crawl: The Use Of Voluntary Caps On Damages In Medical Malpractice Litigation, Ralph Peeples, Catherine Harris Jan 2005

Learning To Crawl: The Use Of Voluntary Caps On Damages In Medical Malpractice Litigation, Ralph Peeples, Catherine Harris

ExpressO

Medical malpractice insurance “crises” seem to recur with distressing frequency. Indeed, the escalating costs of malpractice insurance premiums have become the focal point for advocates of tort reform. While we know quite a bit about the medical malpractice system, we know very little about what might work to fix things. Many reforms have been tried; little has worked. The two most commonly attempted reforms – at least at present- are legislatively imposed caps on non-economic damages (i.e., pain and suffering) and the use of screening panels. Neither of these alternatives offers a satisfactory resolution to the problem.

This article proposes …

Transportation Mural, Cesar Chavez Foundation Jan 2005

Transportation Mural, Cesar Chavez Foundation

Project Summaries

10th-12th grade identified graffiti as one of the main problems in their community; in order to combat this in a creative way the students decided to paint a mural to discourage tagging. As a part of the Transportation Academy at Franklin High School their mural depicted a timeline of transportation in the American West—from walking, to horses, to trains, and finally the local Gold Line Metro rail. The students partnered with a local mural artist to create a vibrant and colorful mural. 100 students participated in the design and painting and so far the wall has remained graffiti-free.

Report From The National Lgbtq Students Of Color Summit, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz Jan 2005

Report From The National Lgbtq Students Of Color Summit, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

I've always imagined finding a space where gender is not assumed, where women are undeniably and understandably attracted to each other, and where men embrace without fear. I found this space at the National Summit for LGBTQ Students of Color on the day of my 22nd birthday, January 15th, 2005. Over two nights and three days, the United States Student Association hosted a national summit filled with grassroots organizing workshops, "how-tos" for your campus, methods on how to challenge homophobia from other student groups while still building alliances, and late night dialogues on art and freedom of expression.

Apology And Medical Mistake: Opportunity Or Foil?, Lee Taft Jan 2005

Apology And Medical Mistake: Opportunity Or Foil?, Lee Taft

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

An innovative examination of the true nature of apology and its ameliorative properties, this article discusses the difficult situations arising in the wake of medical error. An interesting blend of psychology, sociology, and jurisprudence, the author responds to one physician's account of his tragic error, and offers evidence suggesting that the incidence of medical malpractice litigation may be diminished by physicians and hospitals taking responsibility and apologizing for their mistakes.

What Do They Know And When Do They Know It? An Examination Of Citizen Awareness Of Context, Brady Baybeck Jan 2005

What Do They Know And When Do They Know It? An Examination Of Citizen Awareness Of Context, Brady Baybeck

Publications

The connection between the individual and her aggregate geographic environment, usually defined as the neighborhood, is a key component of the contextual model of social influence. However, there is substantial anecdotal evidence that people have very little knowledge or connection to their neighborhood. In this paper we explore the connection by using data from the South Bend Study (Huckfeldt and Sprague 1985) to answer two questions. What do people know about objective conditions of their neighborhoods? Second, do these conditions influence perceptions people have of their neighborhoods? We find that (a) people have a good deal of knowledge about the …

Juanitas Family: Catherine Hufana (Youth), Lori Iwamasa

Filipino American Stories

Catherine Hufana grew up in Stockton, California. Her Filipino culture runs deep in her family and she has always felt “Filipino.” However, after visiting the Phillipines in 1992, Catherine realized that she identified much more strongly with Americans than native Filipinos. As an American, Catherine’s upbringing was much different than her parents. She was raised in a household that spoke mostly English, although her parents are bilingual. As Catherine struggled to fit in with her American peers, her parents continued to introduce her to their own Filipino culture…

20th Century Black Women's Struggle For Empowerment In A White Supremacist Educational System: Tribute To Early Women Educators, Safoura Boukari Jan 2005

20th Century Black Women's Struggle For Empowerment In A White Supremacist Educational System: Tribute To Early Women Educators, Safoura Boukari

Women's and Gender Studies Program: Information and Materials

The goal in this work is to provide a brief overview of the development of Black women‟s education throughout American history and based on some pertinent literatures that highlight not only the tradition of struggle pervasive in people of African Descent lives. In the framework of the historical background, three examples will be used to illustrate women's creative enterprise and contributions to the education of African American children, and overall racial uplift. In doing so, I will refer to how those women struggled to set up schools in a totally hostile society where, race, patriarchy, class and gender, interlocking issues …

Democratic Development And The Role Of Citizenship Education In Sub-Saharan African With A Case Focus On Zambia, Ali A. Abdi, Lee Ellis, Edward Shizha Jan 2005

Democratic Development And The Role Of Citizenship Education In Sub-Saharan African With A Case Focus On Zambia, Ali A. Abdi, Lee Ellis, Edward Shizha

Youth and Children's Studies

In addressing issues related to problems of democratisation in Africa, this paper attempts to relate the issue to the need for citizenship education and the role that can play in social development. Citizenship should be central to the formation of viable civil societies that claim a tangible stake in national public spaces in post-Cold War Africa. These and related topics are discussed relative to new possibilities that could lead to the full realisation of the concept as well as the practice of enfranchised citizenship and inclusive social development in aspiring democracies in the Sub Saharan African context. The complexity of …

When Isaak Was Gone: An Auto-Ethnographic Meditation On Mourning A Toddler, Penelope Ironstone Jan 2005

When Isaak Was Gone: An Auto-Ethnographic Meditation On Mourning A Toddler, Penelope Ironstone

Cultural Analysis and Social Theory Faculty Publications

Taking its starting point from the death and complicated mourning of the author’s own child, this article provides a meditation on the loss of a toddler. It was inspired by the lack of materials specific to the loss of a toddler, and on the complicated work of making meaning around the death of a child. The article is itself a work of mourning, drawing indirectly from theoretical work on trauma and mourning in order to begin to carve out a space for thinking about the specificities of the loss of a toddler. It asks questions about what it means to …
