Law And Public Health: Beyond Emergency Preparedness, Wendy K. Mariner Apr 2005

Law And Public Health: Beyond Emergency Preparedness, Wendy K. Mariner

Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines three questions: What is public health? What is public health law? What roles can lawyers play in public health? It first describes the breadth of public health, highlighting six trends shaping its future: social determinants of health; synergy between medicine and public health; shifts in focus from external (e.g., environmental and social) to internal (behavioral) risks to health; federalization of public health law; globalization of health risks and responses; and bioterrorism. Because the domains of law that apply to public health are equally broad, the Article next offers a conceptual framework for identifying the types of laws …

Ownership And The Internationalization Of Small Firms, Gerard George, Johan Wiklund, Shaker A. Zahra Apr 2005

Ownership And The Internationalization Of Small Firms, Gerard George, Johan Wiklund, Shaker A. Zahra

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play an important role in international markets. This study argues that the ownership structures of SMEs influence their proclivity to take risks and expand the scale and scope of their internationalization efforts. Data from 889 Swedish SMEs reveal that internal owners (CEOs and other senior executives) tend to be risk averse and have a lower proclivity to increase scale and scope of internationalization than external owners (venture capitalists and institutional investors). The results provide interesting insights into the behavioral change of executives regarding the scale and scope of internationalization in the presence of external ownership.

Massworks: Developing Community Partnerships To Reach Underserved Diverse Populations, Institute For Community Inclusion, University Of Massachusetts Boston

MassWorks Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

This issue of MassWorks highlights an innovative approach to enhancing services for individuals from diverse communities. The high unemployment rate and barriers to employment experienced by people with disabilities are well documented. For people from diverse communities, these barriers are compounded by factors such as language, cultural norms regarding work and disability, and difficulty accessing services. Community partnerships can provide a unique opportunity to improve services for individuals from diverse racial, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds.

Residential Adjustments Of Elders: Perspectives Of Elders And Their Adult Children, Alison S. Gottlieb, Elizabeth Johns, Francis G. Caro Apr 2005

Residential Adjustments Of Elders: Perspectives Of Elders And Their Adult Children, Alison S. Gottlieb, Elizabeth Johns, Francis G. Caro

Gerontology Institute Publications

While elders tend to prefer to “age in place,” they often have reason to consider residential alternatives. Declining health and loss of social supports invite elders to consider modifying their homes or moving to other settings that are less demanding and more supportive. Residential adjustments of elders are often a family issue. Among middle-aged adults, worry about the safety of aging parents in their residential environments is widespread. Also common is frustration among adult children about their difficulties in persuading parents to make recommended residential adjustments.

We conducted a qualitative study on residential decision-making based on focus groups and qualitative …

Women In Prison In Massachusetts: Maintaining Family Connections, Erika Kates, Paige Ransford, Carol Cardozo Apr 2005

Women In Prison In Massachusetts: Maintaining Family Connections, Erika Kates, Paige Ransford, Carol Cardozo

Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy

This report first provides an overview of the statistical data on women in prisons in the U.S. over the past two decades. It pays particular attention to the literature on the effects of mothers' incarceration on their children and the gradual recognition of the emotional, economic, and legal consequences for families when parents, especially mothers, are incarcerated. When viewed in this broad context it becomes clear that the concerns and challenges families face extend beyond the perimeters of a single agency or policy area. We then present the comprehensive Family Connections Policy Framework we created for assessing the status of …

Portland State University has been engaged in a 10-year revolution in general education (Journal of General Education, 1999) that has inculcated activist education as central to instruction. In addition to the Critical Thinking and Communication instruction that any general education program must provide, Portland State’s University Studies Program promotes Social Responsibility and Diversity as central goals of its efforts.

Reading In The Future: Literacy And The Time Of The Internet, David R. Cole Apr 2005

Reading In The Future: Literacy And The Time Of The Internet, David R. Cole

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

David R. Cole's Reading in the Future: Literacy and the Time of the Internet locates the literacies of the internet -- itself read as the end game of western technology or the Machina Mundi, the Great Chain of the World that has a centre that is everywhere and a circumference that is nowhere -- in a contradictory space. But Cole also self-consciously locates his own writing at a moment in time when the initial technological hype of the internet is subsiding in the face of the boredom of informational overload and the internet is emerging as both an unlimited …

On Bill V. Mullen's Afro-Orientalism, Graham Barnfield Apr 2005

On Bill V. Mullen's Afro-Orientalism, Graham Barnfield

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

For two decades Edward Said's Orientalism has occupied a significant place in how we think through the cultural relations between what we now call ‘North’ and ‘South’. Conceived in the 1970s, Said’s model mounted a challenge to readers in the west, suggesting they should unlearn what they know of the east. Despite its influence, one weakness of this approach was the underlying suggestion that orientalism was a one-way street, constituting a fixed set of perceptions or timeless discourses. In and without the Orientalist imagination, what is to be done with those in ‘the Occident’ who find themselves treated …

A brief sketch is made of the Reformed tradition. especially Calvin and Presbyterian in the British Isles and America. It will also analyze current problems in the worship of the Korean Presbyterian churches, and includes some suggestions for establishment of worship theology in the Presbyterian Church …

Conceptualizing The Private Police, Elizabeth E. Joh Apr 2005

Conceptualizing The Private Police, Elizabeth E. Joh

Utah Law Review

The war on terrorism has brought new urgency to a subject that remains poorly understood: the private police. When debating whether to authorize the agency that eventually became the Transportation Security Administration, members of Congress for the first time in a generation were forced to pose a fundamental question about the very nature of policing: is it necessarily a governmental function? Incredibly, no one had asked before whether the thousands of private screeners conducting searches at airports ought to be public or private. Similarly, the prisoner abuse scandal at Abu Ghraib raised concerns about the propriety of employing privately contracted …

Marriage And The Struggle For Gay, Lesbian, And Black Liberation, Randall Kennedy Apr 2005

Marriage And The Struggle For Gay, Lesbian, And Black Liberation, Randall Kennedy

Utah Law Review

May 17 is a notable date on the calendar of progressive reform in the United States. On May 17, 1954, in Brown v. Board of Education and Bolling v. Sharpe, the Supreme Court of the United States broke with tradition in holding that the Federal Constitution prohibits states and the federal government from racially segregating students in public primary and secondary schools. Fifty years later, on May 17, 2004, a ruling by the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts took effect that broke with another fiercely defended tradition. In Goodridge v. Department of Public Health, the supreme judicial court held that …
