Opening Remarks: Advocating For Change, Kurt Mundorff

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article critiques the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) for focusing narrowly on parental responsibility while neglecting broader societal factors like poverty and racism. It highlights the challenges in predicting child abuse and the negative outcomes of foster care, arguing that the system's approach is flawed and in need of reform.

Partners In Prevention: Community-Wide Homelessness Prevention In Massachusetts And The United States, Donna H. Friedman, John Mcgah, Julia Tripp, Michelle Kahan, Nicole Witherbee, Amy Carlin

Center for Social Policy Publications

A central objective of the Homelessness Prevention Initiative (HPI) is to generate information for state policymakers on viable statewide approaches for investing in homelessness prevention. Therefore, to contextualize the policy relevance of HPI evaluation findings and to add to the strength of recommendations, the evaluation team has systematically explored examples of community-wide homelessness prevention efforts already underway in Massachusetts and in other parts of the country.

We selected communities that met the following criteria:

  • The prevention network included an entire county, city, region or state.
  • Cross-organizational resource-sharing, policies and interventions were in place.
  • The collaboration engaged in primary prevention, that …

Future Expectations Of Brasilian Street Youth, Marcela Raffaelli, Silvia H. Koller Apr 2005

Future Expectations Of Brasilian Street Youth, Marcela Raffaelli, Silvia H. Koller

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Future expectations of youth surviving on the streets of Porto Alegre, Brasil, were examined. The sample consisted of 35 boys and 34 girls aged 10–18 (M age 14.4) who participated in a sentence completion task and semi-structured interviews. Responses to two incomplete sentences regarding the future revealed a mismatch between hoped-for and expected events. When completing the sentence, “In the future, I hope…” the majority of youth gave optimistic (but generally non-specific) responses. In contrast, the sentence “For me, the future…” elicited more pessimistic responses. Few gender or age-related differences emerged. Findings are discussed in light of prior research with …

Factors Affecting Treatment Program Development In A Mental Health Facility Serving Prisoners, Ruby Miranda Meriweather Apr 2005

Factors Affecting Treatment Program Development In A Mental Health Facility Serving Prisoners, Ruby Miranda Meriweather

Dissertations

There is a paucity of literature on how treatment programs for mentally ill prisoners are developed. Federal mandates require that services to mentally ill prisoners be comparable to what is offered in the community. Planners, therefore, must find ways to provide treatment programs that produce that outcome.

This research identified the most important factors that affect treatment program development and implementation to aid planners in designing treatment programs for mentally ill prisoners. This qualitative study, based on grounded theory, used a structured interview with 61 mental health staff (psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and activity therapists) across three categories (Administrative, …

Expert Testimony On Sexually Abused Child Syndrome In A Child Protective Proceeding: More Hurtful Than Helpful, Mary Ellen Reilly Apr 2005

Expert Testimony On Sexually Abused Child Syndrome In A Child Protective Proceeding: More Hurtful Than Helpful, Mary Ellen Reilly

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The note argues that Sexually Abused Child Syndrome (SACS) testimony is unreliable and should not be admitted as corroborating evidence in child protective proceedings. It contends that SACS lacks scientific validity, is not recognized as a medical diagnosis, and fails to meet evidentiary standards for reliability. The author asserts that allowing SACS testimony violates due process rights and risks wrongful outcomes, advocating for stricter standards for expert testimony and alternative methods of substantiating abuse allegations.

Striving For Success: Practical Advice For Reference Graduate Assistants (And Other New Reference Providers), D. Brett Spencer, Amia Baker, Richard A. Stoddart, Sheri Helt, Adrienne R. Lee, Bryan Paul Tronstad Apr 2005

Striving For Success: Practical Advice For Reference Graduate Assistants (And Other New Reference Providers), D. Brett Spencer, Amia Baker, Richard A. Stoddart, Sheri Helt, Adrienne R. Lee, Bryan Paul Tronstad

The Southeastern Librarian

With a little reflection, most librarians can recall the excitement, anticipation, and fear that filled their early days at the reference desk:

“What will people ask me?”

“What if I don’t know how to help someone?”

“What do I need to do to be successful?”

Many librarians first experienced this emotional turbulence while working as graduate assistants (GAs) in academic library reference departments. Although demanding, working as a reference graduate assistant yields many benefits. An assistantship introduces participants to basics of reference librarianship like customer service, search techniques, and teamwork. Assistantships also help students get their foot in the door …

Mend It Or End It? An Opportunity To Reconsider The Death Penalty, Eric M. Freedman Apr 2005

Mend It Or End It? An Opportunity To Reconsider The Death Penalty, Eric M. Freedman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The revised edition of the ABA's "Guidelines for the Appointment and Performance of Defense Counsel in Death Penalty Cases" offers a lens through which to consider whether retention of capital punishment is sensible public policy.

A reader of the Guidelines finds that the current death penalty system is characterized by severely impaired clients, pervasive racism, a structural bias in favor of guilty verdicts, less effective counsel than in non-capital cases, and a dysfunctional system of post-conviction review.

No amount of money can solve these problems; at best, sufficient expenditures can ameliorate them. But making even that attempt will be costly …

Non-Formal Education And Autonomous Spaces: Cideci’S Independent Alternative And The Regeneration Of Indigenous Cultural Spaces In Chiapas, Rachel Beatty Apr 2005

Non-Formal Education And Autonomous Spaces: Cideci’S Independent Alternative And The Regeneration Of Indigenous Cultural Spaces In Chiapas, Rachel Beatty

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In this study I explore CIdeCI’s role in regenerating autonomous cultural and physical spaces for Indigenous learning, and thus living, outside of the government system through its alternative educational methods and non-formal, independent status. I argue that non-formal education plays an essential role in regenerating cultural and physical spaces necessary for ensuring that Indigenous forms of social organization retain and/or obtain their autonomy from state and national governments. I will begin by presenting a brief overview of my research methodology, followed by theoretical background regarding education and cultural spaces, specifically pertaining to the Indigenous population of Chiapas. I will then …

Transformational Leadership Development In Adolescent Youth: Authoritative Parenting, And The Mediating Effect Of Psychological Autonomy And Mastery Orientation, Franklin T. Kudo Apr 2005

Transformational Leadership Development In Adolescent Youth: Authoritative Parenting, And The Mediating Effect Of Psychological Autonomy And Mastery Orientation, Franklin T. Kudo

Student Scholarship

This is an empirical research study exploring how adolescent youth can develop into transformational leaders. It investigates the question whether adolescent children through proper parenting practices develop specific leadership capabilities. It is argued that certain parent-child interactions promote adolescent psychological autonomy and mastery-orientation, and that these interactions lead to the development of leadership qualities similar to those found in the literature of the adult transformational leader. Through the use of specific measurement survey instruments, data from adolescent boys and a few girls was collected and analyzed. The results obtained help explain the possible interactions between parenting and leadership development in …
