Enhancing The Value Of The Rural Experience Through Improved Connectivity, Brian Dabson

Center for Social Development Research

The purpose of this paper is to examine the proposition that improved connectivity, specifically through the use of broadband telecommunications, may be an important factor in enhancing the value of the “rural experience” and in so doing, improving the economic prospects for rural communities. This paper is one of a series focusing on wealth-building in rural America. The paper begins with a discussion of the current issues and perceived opportunities associated with the introduction and expansion of broadband telecommunications in rural America. It continues with a number of perspectives on the “rural experience” and in particular on those natural assets …

Impact Of Asset Ownership On Social Inclusion, Margaret Lombe, Michael Sherraden Jul 2005

Impact Of Asset Ownership On Social Inclusion, Margaret Lombe, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

Persistent poverty and social exclusion suggest the need for more innovative interventions to reduce severe need and create terms for meaningful participation of vulnerable individuals in economic, political, and social exchange. One such innovation is asset ownership. This study explores the relationship between asset ownership and social inclusion using the human capabilities approach. Findings indicate a significant relationship, suggesting a role for asset-based policy and programs in interventions to foster social inclusion.

International Service: History And Forms, Pitfalls And Potential, Amanda Moore Mcbride, Dolly Daftary Jul 2005

International Service: History And Forms, Pitfalls And Potential, Amanda Moore Mcbride, Dolly Daftary

Center for Social Development Research

International voluntary service represents the contribution of one’s time to some cause, which is largely uncompensated and spent in a country other than one’s home country. The forms of international service have evolved from roots in missionary service to a focus on development of the host communities and the volunteers. Current trends emphasize mutuality, accountability, and participation by host communities, but against a historical and contemporary backdrop, inequality remains between the volunteers and hosts. This paper speculates a range of possible positive and negative developmental outcomes, programmatic strategies to mediate negative effects, and research to inform program and policy development.

Family And Cultural Issues In Assistive Technology, Howard P. Parette, Joan Breslin Larson Jul 2005

Family And Cultural Issues In Assistive Technology, Howard P. Parette, Joan Breslin Larson

Faculty Publications - College of Education

To ensure effective assistive technology (AT) decision-making for children with disabilities, families should ideally be actively involved in the process. An evolving issue in family-centered practice is the role of cultural and linguistic issues that may influence the participation of family members in AT decision-making and subsequent implementation of and support for devices and services. Culturally and linguistically-based values may wield strong influences on family perceptions of AT, and successful implementation of AT solutions agreed upon by team members.

This discussion will address issues related to identifying and developing an understanding of family perspectives about goals and expectations for AT …

Diffusion Of Policy Innovation: The Case Of Individual Development Accounts (Idas) As An Asset-Building Policy, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Kristen Wagner, Karen Edwards

Center for Social Development Research

Diffusion of a policy innovation from one state to another is an important component of social change. Several theories and models have been developed to explain how and under what circumstances policy innovation and diffusion occurs. This paper examines the policy diffusion process through the case of Individual Development Accounts (IDAs), a policy innovation designed to provide matched saving opportunities for low-income people to accumulate assets. While our examination supports several of the prominent theories of policy diffusion, we suggest that a fusion of policy theories may better guide policy makers in more adequately predicting and executing the diffusion of …

Predicting Student Loan Default For The University Of Texas At Austin, Elizabeth Herr, Larry Burt Jul 2005

Predicting Student Loan Default For The University Of Texas At Austin, Elizabeth Herr, Larry Burt

Journal of Student Financial Aid

During spring 2001, Noel-Levitz created a student loan default model for the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin). The goal of this project was to identify students most likely to default, to identify as risk elements those characteristics that contributed to student loan default, and to use these risk elements to plan and implement targeted, pro-active interventions to prevent student loan default. UT Austin supplied academic data for the project, and the student loan guarantor Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation (TG) provided the data about borrowers from UT Austin who entered repayment between 1996 and 1999. Results showed that …

Community And School Drug Prevention Strategy Prevalence: Differential Effects By Setting And Substance, Curtis J. Vanderwaal, Lisa M. Powell, Yvonne M. Terry-Mcelrath, Yanjun Bao, Brian R. Flay

Faculty Publications

This study used key informant interviews and student survey data in 508 U.S. communities to examine relationships between the prevalence of community and non-classroom-based school substance prevention strategies and teen substance use rates. After controlling for covariates, analyses indicated that: (1) adult-supervised after-school activities were significantly related to lower past 30-day cigarette smoking and both past 30-day alcohol use and binge drinking; (2) unsupervised after-school recreational facilities were significantly associated with both lower past 30-day cigarette smoking and current daily smoking; (3) community activities to reduce substance use were significantly related to lower binge drinking; and (4) student organizations to …

Adaptation To Cesarean Birth: Implementation Of An International Multisite Study, Jacqueline Fawcett, Cynthia Aber, Marianne E. Weiss, Susan Haussler, Sheila Taylor Myers, Charlette King, Jennifer Newton, Virginia Silva

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this column is to describe the implementation of an international multisite Roy adaptation model-based study of women’s perceptions of and responses to cesarean birth. The need for the study arose from the concern that women’s childbearing needs may not be met to their full satisfaction, especially if the infant is born by cesarean. Serendipity and networking played a part in the selection of four study sites in the United States (Boston, Milwaukee, Norfolk, Oklahoma City) and two in other countries (Finland, Australia). Data were collected by nursing students and staff nurses. Post-hoc consideration of the diversity of …
