Faculty Perceptions Of The Effects Of Collective Bargaining Agreements On Their Professional Roles: The New England Public Higher Education Experience, Nancy J S Hamer Jan 2005

Faculty Perceptions Of The Effects Of Collective Bargaining Agreements On Their Professional Roles: The New England Public Higher Education Experience, Nancy J S Hamer

Doctoral Dissertations

This study, a combination of quantitative and artifact analysis, examined how New England public college and university faculty perceived their professional concerns were affected by working under a collective bargaining agreement. The professional concerns, derived from the pertinent literature, included the following: the ability of the faculty to effectively influence who joined the faculty ranks; their powers to determine the curriculum, with their related instructional practices/delivery systems, and the setting of degree requirements; determining their teaching, scholarship, and service requirements; assuring the exercise of academic freedom, and reasonable shared governance.

Coupled with these professional concerns were three research questions that …

Why The Village Is So Hard To Find: Challenging Ourselves, Transforming Our Helping Systems, Roger Friedman

Journal of Family Strengths

Keynote address presented by Roger Friedman, PhD, LCSW at the Family Preservation Institute Annual Conference, San Antonio, Texas, September 9, 2004.

Looking at Language and Concepts

Looking closely at certain language that we use helps us understand how we think about our work and our world—and ultimately, it helps us understand ourselves better. The term "village " as used in the title of the paper and in many of our professional conversations is worthy of such an inquiry

Perceived Obligations Of Stepfathers To Financially Support Their Stepchildren; Public Perceptions Of Stepfathers' Obligations To Financially Support Their Stepchildren, Miriam Maclean Jan 2005

Perceived Obligations Of Stepfathers To Financially Support Their Stepchildren; Public Perceptions Of Stepfathers' Obligations To Financially Support Their Stepchildren, Miriam Maclean

Theses : Honours

The present study investigated public perceptions of stepfathers' obligation to financially support stepchildren. Two hundred Australians completed vignette-based questionnaires assessing normative expectations of stepfathers financial contribution. A 2 x 2 x 2 between-subjects design was used to assess the effects of marital status, maternal employment, and prior child support commitments on perceived obligations to stepchildren. Most participants believed stepfathers should contribute financially, but responses varied greatly. Defacto relationships and maternal employment reduced obligation. A significant 3-way interaction was also found. Qualitative responses were analysed from a normative expectations and distributive justice perspective. Findings support the use and integration of these …

Women In History--Mary Mcleod Bethune, Mark Giesler

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Unlike many of her contemporaries, Mary McLeod Bethune is not a household name. This is perhaps fitting. Despite the fact that she made major contributions in politics and education, she epitomized the quiet, passionate African-American woman of the mid-20th century, "the mothers of the race, the homemakers and spiritual guides" (Hanson, 2003, p. 2).

Florida Statute 63.042(3): A Policy Of Exclusion, Melissa Cusack Jan 2005

Florida Statute 63.042(3): A Policy Of Exclusion, Melissa Cusack

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Nearly thirty years ago the state of Florida launched a campaign against homosexual adoptions. What began in Miami with a public debate over a referendum to make discrimination based on sexual orientation unlawful ended with a community divided and a welfare system taxed even further. "In 1977, Florida became the first state to statutorily ban adoption by gay or lesbian adults by enacting the homosexual adoption provision. Currently, it is the only state with such a prohibition."

Criminal Prosecution And Civil Remedies For Victims Of Sexual Offenses: Amendment Of The Rape Shield Law, Carol E. Jordan, Elizabeth S. Hughes, Mary Jo Gleason Jan 2005

Criminal Prosecution And Civil Remedies For Victims Of Sexual Offenses: Amendment Of The Rape Shield Law, Carol E. Jordan, Elizabeth S. Hughes, Mary Jo Gleason

Office for Policy Studies on Violence Against Women Publications

In 2003, the Kentucky Supreme Court adopted the amended KRS 412, effectively making the language of KRE 412 consistent with the analogous Federal Rule of Evidence 412. Now, as in federal court, the provisions of the Rape Shield Law apply in both criminal and civil cases to govern when and how evidence of a victim's alleged sexual behavior or sexual predisposition may be introduced. The article describes the intent of the original Rape Shield Law and the implications of its amended version in both civil and criminal cases.
