Joseph Smith And Abraham Lincoln, Richard Bushman
Joseph Smith And Abraham Lincoln, Richard Bushman
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
In a letter to his friend John Stuart, dated March 1, 1840, Abraham Lincoln wrote that Joseph Smith had recently passed through Springfield, Illinois. In a tantalizingly brief report, Lincoln told Stuart that "Speed [another close friend] says he wrote you what Jo. Smith said about you as he passed here. We will procure the names of some of his people here and send them to you before long." The nature of Joseph's comment on Stuart can only be surmised. Joseph had spent the winter in Washington D.C., vainly seeking compensation for the Saints' losses in Missouri in 1839. He …

The Greening Of The Dhamma: Engaged Buddhist Environmentalism In The United States And Thailand, Hilary Bogert
The Greening Of The Dhamma: Engaged Buddhist Environmentalism In The United States And Thailand, Hilary Bogert
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Since the 1960s, the movement known as "Engaged Buddhism" has grown on a global scale. From protesting human rights violations to spending meditation retreats as homeless persons on the streets ofNew York, Engaged Buddhists react to modem problems by using a Buddhist framework. The Engaged Buddhist Environmentalism movement is a specific example of Engaged Buddhism. In the United States, Engaged Buddhist Environmentalists respond to problems such as nuclear waste and species extinction by reinterpreting traditional Buddhist doctrines and applying them to an ecological setting. Thai Engaged Buddhist Environmentalists, on the other hand, apply those doctrines to Buddhist rituals in response …
Lost Christianities: The Battles For Scripture And The Faiths We Never Knew [Review Of The Book Lost Christianities: The Battles For Scripture And The Faiths We Never Knew By B. D. Ehrman], Rubén R. Dupertuis
Religion Faculty Research
This book is an introduction to the basic content of non-canonical early Christian texts, exploring them both as evidence for the diversity of early Christianity and for what they can say about the formation of the New Testament canon. It is divided into three sections. The first uses the concept of forgery to introduce a number of important extra-canonical texts (including Gospel of Peter, the Acts of Paul and Thecla, the Coptic Gospel of Thomas, and the Secret Gospel of Mark). The second section takes a closer look at some of the different forms of Christianity …

Promising Practices: Collaboration Among Catholic Bishops And University Presidents, Michael Galligan-Stierle General Ed.
Sacred Heart University Press Books
A project of the Bishops and Presidents Subcommittee of the USCCB Education Committee, in collaboration with the Association of Catholic Colleges & Universities.
In May 2001, The Application of Ex Corde Ecclesiae for the United States was promulgated, eleven years after the issuing of the document. Following the publishing of Guidelines Concerning the Mandatum in Catholic Universities in July 2001, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) Committee on Education reconstituted the Bishops and Presidents Subcommittee “as a forum for an ongoing conversation on higher education issues.” The subcommittee aimed to find ways to strengthen cooperation between Catholic higher …

Lay Leaders In Catholic Higher Education: An Emerging Paradigm For The Twenty-First Century, Anthony J. Cernera, Ed.
Sacred Heart University Press Books
Since the Second Vatican Council, lay women and men are assuming greater responsibility for guiding the mission of the Catholic Church in the modern world. This is particularly the case in institutions of Catholic higher education in the United States. The eighteen essays in this volume, based on presentations at a conference sponsored by Sacred Heart University and the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, examine the many challenges facing lay leaders of Catholic institutions of higher learning. The volume begins with a report on a detailed study of the background of lay leaders; the essays that follow address such …

No Man Knows My Psychology: Fawn Brodie, Joseph Smith, And Psychoanalysis, Charles L. Cohen
No Man Knows My Psychology: Fawn Brodie, Joseph Smith, And Psychoanalysis, Charles L. Cohen
BYU Studies
Anyone (like me) approaching the study of Mormon history wet behind the ears soon confronts Fawn McKay Brodie's famous (or, in certain LDS circles, infamous) biography of Joseph Smith. Quickly fulfilling Herbert Brayer's prophecy that it "will probably of be one of the most highly praised as well as highly condemned historical works of 1945," No Man Knows My History elicited both wholesale acclaim ("the best book about the Mormons so far published," Bernard De Voto enthused; a "definitive treatment," seconded her friend Dale Morgan) and whole-hearted condemnation ("the statement made by Joseph Smith that "no man knows my history," …

The Study Of Religion And The Rise Of Atheism: Conflict Or Confirmation?, Michael J. Buckley S.J.
The Study Of Religion And The Rise Of Atheism: Conflict Or Confirmation?, Michael J. Buckley S.J.
Religious Studies
'Religion' and 'theology' are not terms with fixed meanings and invariant applications. They are rather copies or commonplaces - not in the sense of the familiar and the trite, but in the classical sense of linguistic variables, terms ambiguous and capacious enough to house a vast diversity of meanings, arguments, and referents.1 The interconnection of such topics constitutes neither a determined problem nor an exact proposition. It constitutes what John Dewey called 'a problematic situation', an indeterminate area out of which problems and their resolutions can emerge only if these ambiguous terms are given specific meanings and definite applications …

In A Dark Wood: Dante As A Spiritual Guide For Lawyers, Joseph Allegretti
In A Dark Wood: Dante As A Spiritual Guide For Lawyers, Joseph Allegretti
St. Thomas Law Review
In this paper, I propose to focus on three stages in the Divine Comedy that represent three stages of the spiritual journey. First, being lost. The poem opens with Dante lost in a dark wood, corresponding to the spiritual situation of many lawyers today. Recall the title of Dean Kronman's book: The Lost Lawyer. Second, taking the journey. Dante moves from the dark wood through hell and purgatory on his journey of self-discovery. The lessons he learns can help anyone setting out on the spiritual journey. Third, arriving home. Dante ends his poem with a vision of what it means …
Judicial Reform In Afghanistan: A Case Study In The New Criminal Procedure Code, Faiz Ahmed
Judicial Reform In Afghanistan: A Case Study In The New Criminal Procedure Code, Faiz Ahmed
UC Law SF International Law Review
On January 4, 2004, the Islamic Transitional State of Afghanistan ratified a constitution. While lauded by many, a number of its articles have stirred debate within Afghanistan. Using the country's new criminal procedure code as a case study, the author addresses key questions pertaining to legal reform and development movements, including the foreign imposition of law, a lack of local participation in legal reform processes, and a blindness to the multiple layers of indigenous law practiced on the ground. The author concludes that these are all weaknesses that will fundamentally hamper the rebuilding of stable legal institutions in Afghanistan in …
