The Role Of Communicative Creativity In Starting Regional Trade Relationships With China: An Action Research Practitioner Case Study, David W. Maguire

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The Action Research project studies the role of information management and knowledge generation in establishing overseas political and trade activity to assist regional development in Australia. It is the work of a researcher whose background in information management ranges across more than 30 years working in the newspaper and regional economic development industries. It applies a hybrid term called “communicative creativity” – distilled from Wieman’s (1963) Doctrine of Creative Interchange and Habermas’s (1984) Theory of Communicative Action – to the researcher’s professional practice of facilitating the development of two entities – the economic development organization and its method of facilitating …

English Reading Comprehension Of Thai Undergraduates : L1/L2 Usage, Texts, Strategies And Problems, Rapeeporn Sroinam

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

English Ianguage has been taught as a foreign language in Thailand for more than a century and now occupies an important place at all levels of the Thai education system. This study investigates the influence that the Thai language has on intermediate level undergraduate sludents while they are engaged in individual unaided reading of a variety of English texts and determines what aspects of reading texts caused problems. It aims to compare how often and for what purposes students resort to Thai with texts about culturally familiar texts and culturally unfamiliar texts, as well with different genres and question types. …

Towards The Light : A Fictionalized (Auto) Biography, John Cailes Jan 2005

Towards The Light : A Fictionalized (Auto) Biography, John Cailes

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Towards the Light - - at times biographical, autobiographical, and basically fiction - is built out of anecdotes supplied to me as the result of direct questioning of my parents and relatives, and from my own memories of past experiences; from private 'on the ground' observations both in Western Australia and in Cornwall, England – and, where factual information is lacking, a good deal of creative invention on my part. My paternal great-grandfather who at the age of eight began his working life in a Cornish tin mine provided me with a figure central to my purpose while constructing this …

The Non-Modularity Of Moral Knowledge: Implications For The Universality Of Human Rights, Theresa W. Tobin Jan 2005

The Non-Modularity Of Moral Knowledge: Implications For The Universality Of Human Rights, Theresa W. Tobin

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Many contemporary human rights theorists argue that we can establish the normative universality of human rights despite extensive cultural and moral diversity by appealing to the notion of overlapping consensus. In this paper I argue that proposals to ground the universality of human rights in overlapping consensus on the list of rights are unsuccessful. I consider an example from Islamic comprehensive doctrine in order to demonstrate that apparent consensus on the list of rights may not in fact constitute meaningful agreement and may not be sufficient to ground the universality of human rights. I conclude with some general suggestions for …

Digital Asset Management System For Small Graphic Design Operations, Levy Chandra Jan 2005

Digital Asset Management System For Small Graphic Design Operations, Levy Chandra

Theses

According to the 1999 data of the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 75% of graphic design firms are small, with no more than four employees. Currently, there is a limited amount of literature relating to digital asset management (DAM) in relation to this population. These graphic design firms work on various projects using multiple digital assets for each, such as text, images, and fonts. Some firms choose to use proprietary asset management software to manage, search, and backup their assets, while others set up workflows that utilize existing network systems and graphic software.

This research is a case study which …

Securing Peer-To-Peer Overlay Networks, William Heinbockel Jan 2005

Securing Peer-To-Peer Overlay Networks, William Heinbockel

Theses

Overlay networks are virtual networks, which exist on top of the current Inter net architecture, and are used in support of peer-to-peer (P2P) applications. The virtualization provides overlays with the ability to create large, scalable, decentral ized networks with efficient routing. Many implementations of overlay networks have come out of academic research. Each provides a unique structure and routing configuration, aimed at increasing the overall network efficiency for a particular ap plication. However, they are all threatened by a similar set of severe vulnerabilities.

I explore some of these security deficiencies of overlay network designs and pro pose a new …

A Process Capability Index For Three-Dimensional Data With Circular Or Ellipsoidal Tolerances., Veljko Fotak Jan 2005

A Process Capability Index For Three-Dimensional Data With Circular Or Ellipsoidal Tolerances., Veljko Fotak

Theses

We discuss the estimation of a process capability index for three-dimensional data. Initially, we focus on the case in which the engineering tolerance associated with the measurements is a sphere. Then, we extend the discussion to the more general case in which the engineering tolerance is ellipsoidal. In both cases, we develop summary measures for repeatability and reproducibility, to be used in the context of a process capability index.

In the spherical tolerance case we define summary measures, where each measure is based on the diameter of a sphere that leads to a pre-specified capture rate (we will use here …

Low Frequency Noise Modeling In Single- And Double-Gate Mosfets, Shailesh S. Rai Jan 2005

Low Frequency Noise Modeling In Single- And Double-Gate Mosfets, Shailesh S. Rai

Theses

The Flicker or 1// noise dominates the noise spectrum at low frequency. A serious concern for MOSFETs for circuit application is much higher flicker (1//) noise because of the heterogeneous interface between silicon (Si) and silicon dioxide (Si02). Very high intrinsic flicker noise of CMOS transistors becomes a drawback for low-Intermediate Frequency (IF) or direct-conversion architectures. In spite of extensive research and efforts to understand the low-frequency noise origin in semiconductor devices, there exists no unique theory to explain the low-frequency noise generation mechanism. Flicker noise in MOSFETs is usually perceived to be caused by carrier density fluctuations, which is …

Multilayer Composite Structures For Stress Mitigation In Thin Films And Mems Applications., Michael J. Parthum Sr. Jan 2005

Multilayer Composite Structures For Stress Mitigation In Thin Films And Mems Applications., Michael J. Parthum Sr.

Theses

The IC and MEMS industry has been plagued by the problem of residual stresses that result from the deposition of materials on silicon. The residual stresses can induce the delamination of the thin firms, impede subsequent processing steps, or adversely effect the final geometry and performance of thicker films used in MEMS. The current research introduces a novel approach using a multi-layer sandwich composite approach to control residual stresses in a MEMS device, as well as to control the final geometry of the device. The method uses different materials and/or processing parameters, to create a stress - neutral laminate by …

Is014001 And Oshas 18001, Effective Ehs Management Tools For Shoe Factories In Vietnam Case Study, Lam, Quang Anh Vu

Theses

With growing demand from stakeholders, Vietnamese shoe factories desperately need to effectively implement sound EHS management systems. The ISO14001 and OSHAS 18001 standards ("the Standards") have emerged as effective EHS management tools to serve those needs. However, the Vietnamese shoe industry has very limited experience in implementing those standards. They also do not understand the concept of cost-effectiveness and the challenges of implementation. Small medium enterprises anticipated difficulties in technology improvement required by the ISO 14001 due to resources limitation and all local companies concern about cost prohibited certification and no tangible market benefits (Greening Trade in Vietnam, 16). The …

The Visual Story Of Exodus: Educational Multimedia Bible, Inwook Choi

Theses

My project is an educational multi-media tool and is related to the religion: Christianity. It was made for the purpose of learning and teaching Exodus: One of the most important books in the Old Testament. As a Bible teacher, I have looked for many ways to teach the Bible effectively for more than ten years. I used to teach the Bible with some visual materials like videos, charts, maps, and sometimes I even created my own supplements because there was no way to find any appropriate visual material which showed customs and culture in the biblical time. When I used …

Lost In Translation: From U.S. Corporate Charter Competition To Issuer Choice In International Securities Regulation, Frederick Tung Jan 2005

Lost In Translation: From U.S. Corporate Charter Competition To Issuer Choice In International Securities Regulation, Frederick Tung

Faculty Scholarship

Corporate charter competition among U.S. states has been held out as a model of welfare-enhancing regulatory competition. Proponents of this story also rely on it as a basis for promoting regulatory competition in international securities regulation. Issuer choice proponents argue that an issuer of securities should be permitted to choose the securities regulation of any nation to govern its securities offerings and trading worldwide. This Article challenges the notion that the claimed success of corporate charter competition among U.S. states argues in favor of issuer choice for international securities regulation.

Even granting the assumptions of race-to-the-top advocates and accepting the …

Problem-Solving Advocacy In Mediations: A Model Of Client Representation, Harold Abramson Jan 2005

Problem-Solving Advocacy In Mediations: A Model Of Client Representation, Harold Abramson

Scholarly Works

Many sophisticated and experienced litigators realize that mediation calls for a different approach, but they still muddle through the mediation sessions. They are learning on the job. Even though many attorneys prefer a problem-solving approach to negotiations, attorneys are still in the early stages of figuring out how to do it in mediations. Many attorneys went to law school before courses on dispute resolution were offered, and the dispute resolution courses that have emerged in law schools over the last twenty-five years have been largely limited to teaching students to be mediators, not advocates. Continuing legal education programs are only …

Structural Advances For Pattern Discovery In Multi-Relational Databases, Juveria Kanodia Jan 2005

Structural Advances For Pattern Discovery In Multi-Relational Databases, Juveria Kanodia

Theses

With ever-growing storage needs and drift towards very large relational storage settings, multi-relational data mining has become a prominent and pertinent field for discovering unique and interesting relational patterns. As a consequence, a whole suite of multi-relational data mining techniques is being developed. These techniques may either be extensions to the already existing single-table mining techniques or may be developed from scratch. For the traditionalists, single-table mining algorithms can be used to work on multi-relational settings by making inelegant and time consuming joins of all target relations. However, complex relational patterns cannot be expressed in a single-table format and thus, …

Community Redevelopment, Public Use, And Eminent Domain, Patricia E. Salkin, Lora A. Lucero

Scholarly Works

Published just weeks before the U.S. Supreme Court handed down their controversial decision on Kelo v. City of New London in 2005, this article, in correctly predicting the outcome of the Supreme Court opinion, explores in Section I how the concept of what constitutes a public use has evolved over the decades from traditionally accepted uses such as public roads, buildings (e.g., government buildings and schools), and utilities to urban redevelopment. It explains how the broad concepts of community redevelopment have been stretched to encompass needed economic development projects that promise jobs, tax revenue, and other public benefits similar to …

Gis In An Age Of Homeland Security: Accessing Public Information To Ensure A Sustainable Environment, Patricia E. Salkin

Scholarly Works

Critical to the goal of achieving sustainable development is governments' ability to maintain public information, including maps, charts, statistics, and narrative text, about a wide variety of environmental factors, indicators, resources, and threats in easily understandable formats that are readily accessible to the public. While federal and state freedom of information laws help to ensure a relatively high rate of public access to traditional information, such as environmental impact statements, studies and reports, significant environmental events and resources, and census data, the growing use and reliance on geographic information systems ("GIS") has the potential to move the public discourse to a …
