The Effects Of Employment On High School Performance, Erik Pizer
The Effects Of Employment On High School Performance, Erik Pizer
Masters Theses
Previous research on the effect of employment on high school performance has produced inconsistent results. This study investigates the influence of work hours on academic achievement, measured by grade point average (GPA). GPA is chosen because it is a more direct measure of performance in high school than standardized tests. It captures the day-to-day performance of students on everything from homework to quizzes and in-class participation to final examinations.
GPA falls by 0.02 grade points for every ten hours worked. This decrease in academic achievement caused by work may result from the displacement of extracurricular and co-curricular activities by work …
Observing, Navigating, Exploring: The Fourfold Path Of Nourishing Wrath And Others, Greg Holden
Observing, Navigating, Exploring: The Fourfold Path Of Nourishing Wrath And Others, Greg Holden
Masters Theses
A good poet to illustrate the distinction between modernism and postmodernism would be George Oppen (1908-1986). I believe Oppen's "objectivism" - coupled with a judicious use of deliberate ambiguity - nicely gets us past the postmodern insistence on the illusions of selfhood, reason, and order by insisting on the centrality of the perceiver/thinker amid the objective chaos of perceptions/ideas, while at the same time recognizing the multi-vocal construction of the perceiver/thinker. I believe the self may project its illusions onto reality, but not all reality (including the "self') is always thereby a false image. I have tried to fulfill Oppen's …
A Study Of The Language And Music In The Songs Of The Methodist Church, Robert J. Ford
A Study Of The Language And Music In The Songs Of The Methodist Church, Robert J. Ford
Masters Theses
The focus of this study is to demonstrate that the language used to write the texts for sacred music of the Methodist Church including psalms, hymns, camp meeting songs, Negro spirituals, and gospel music has been adapted throughout history to meet the changing spiritual needs of society.
This thesis reveals details about the lyrics of sacred songs from the sixteenth through the twentieth centuries that are pertinent to historic and modern Methodist music. Furthermore, it includes comparisons of numerous song texts and Bible verses. These compositions exhibit the most eminent church leaders' and composers' works from each stage of Methodist …
Determining The Outcome Of Secession: The Cases Of East Timor, West Papua, And Aceh, Christopher K. Micks
Determining The Outcome Of Secession: The Cases Of East Timor, West Papua, And Aceh, Christopher K. Micks
Masters Theses
This thesis examines two factors that influence the success of a secessionist movement: the presence of a cohesive group within the secessionist movement and third party support for the secessionist movement. To understand the relevance of these two factors, the secessionist movements of East Timor, West Papua, and Aceh are tested. These three secessionist movements all occur in Indonesia and each one demands independence from Indonesia and wishes to form its own separate state. This thesis first examines the relevance of these two factors in East Timor because East Timor successfully achieved independence from Indonesia. Once finding that these factors …
The Construct Validity Of The Wechsler Abbreviated Scale Of Intelligence (Wasi) And The Wide Range Intelligence Test (Writ): Replication And Extension, Gregory S. Wilson
The Construct Validity Of The Wechsler Abbreviated Scale Of Intelligence (Wasi) And The Wide Range Intelligence Test (Writ): Replication And Extension, Gregory S. Wilson
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to further verify the relationship between the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI) and the Wide Range Intelligence Test (WRIT) by replicating Collins' (2002) study regarding the convergent validity between these two tests. To assess the convergent validity of the WASI and WRIT, two newer brief intelligence tests, 86 participants from central Illinois public schools were administered both measures in counterbalanced order. All correlations between the WASI and WRIT were significant (p < .05). Furthermore, the correlations between the corresponding IQ scales and subtests of the WASI and WRIT were moderate to high, ranging from .55 (r2 = .30) to .82 (r²= .67). The results provided convergent evidence for the construct validity of the WASI and WRIT and supported the contention made by Collins (2002) that the WASI and WRIT are measuring similar constructs. The results of the joint exploratory factor analysis supported the retention of only one factor (general intelligence "g"). A forced, two-factor solution resulted in 10.50% more variation among WASI/WRIT subtest scores. However, the two factors correlated at a high magnitude (r = .75), and all subtests cross-loaded with their theoretical dissimilar factor. The results of the factor analysis supporteda conclusion that the WASI and WRIT are best conceptualized as providing strong measurements of general intelligence.
The Civic Development And Political Socialization Of High School Students: An In-Depth Look At One Southern Illinois School District, Jamie Bolander Weitl
The Civic Development And Political Socialization Of High School Students: An In-Depth Look At One Southern Illinois School District, Jamie Bolander Weitl
Masters Theses
Is there a difference in the way students are socialized and the amount of political knowledge they have based on location and socio-economic status? This thesis looks at one rural Illinois high school (East Richland High School, Olney, Illinois) through a 2004 school wide survey and compares results with Richard Niemi's "The Civic Development of9th through 12h-grade students in the United States," a 1996 nationwide survey of students.
To examine the political knowledge level of ERHS, student's overall political knowledge score was related to their parent's political party affiliation, grade level, gender, GPA, involvement in student council, involvement with community …
Examination Of Sexual Offenders' Behaviors And Self-Perceptions, Denise Wright
Examination Of Sexual Offenders' Behaviors And Self-Perceptions, Denise Wright
Masters Theses
Child sexual abuse is a global concern. More specifically, the growing concern has prompted researchers to study the effects of abuse, with varied interest in both victims and perpetrators. For child sexual abuse to be addressed there needs to be an increased focus on sex offenders. Study of sex offenders' perceptions of their behavior and childhood experiences may yield further understanding of the reasons and motives behind the abuse. The purpose of the study is to examine sex offender's behaviors and self-perceptions related to sexual activity.
The present study consists of 46 registered male sex offenders located at three different …
Exploring The Subjective Meanings And Experiences Of Depression, Reena Sheth
Exploring The Subjective Meanings And Experiences Of Depression, Reena Sheth
Masters Theses
This study aimed to provide subjectivist accounts of how people understand and interpret their experience of depression. In the mainstream research on depression, the voices of people who experience depression are largely absent. Therefore, the meanings and experiences of depression from the perspective of people who are living with depression themselves were explored in this study by drawing on in-depth interviews. The stories of two participants diagnosed with depression were examined using the holistic-content and the holistic-form analysis approach proposed by Lieblich, Mashiach, and Ziber (1998). Illness narrative forms outlined by Frank (1998) were also utilized to explore how the …
Small Group Social Norms Intervention With Students Involved In Greek Life, Krista A. Mazza
Small Group Social Norms Intervention With Students Involved In Greek Life, Krista A. Mazza
Masters Theses
The misuse of alcohol is often a concern on college campuses nationwide. This concern has created a need for effective alcohol interventions to reduce alcohol misuse. This study investigated college student's perceptions about peer alcohol usage and one's own actual alcohol consumption. A social norms presentation was used to with seven Greek letter organizations to attempt to correct the misperceptions students have about their peers alcohol consumption, and therefore reduce the amount of alcohol consumed. A total of 68 individuals completed all elements ofthe project relevant to this study, of which 22 were male and 46 were female. Furthermore, 17 …
Illinois Standards Achievement Test (Isat) Reading Test Performance And Oral Reading Rate Of 3rd And 5th Grade Illinois Students, Angela R. Herrera
Illinois Standards Achievement Test (Isat) Reading Test Performance And Oral Reading Rate Of 3rd And 5th Grade Illinois Students, Angela R. Herrera
Masters Theses
The relationship between Illinois Standard Achievement Test reading scores for 3rd and 5th graders and their oral reading fluency rates was examined. Four hundred fifty nine students in those grades were given reading probes to determine their reading rate. Reading rate was defined as words read aloud per minute correctly on reading probes composed of text from the students' basal readers as measured by the classroom teacher. The Illinois Standard Achievement Test (ISAT) reading test results were obtained in the spring of each year in a group format. The results indicated a modest correlation between the two sets of data. …
Teens Talk With Parents About Sex, Alcohol, Drugs, And Suicide... Or Do They?, Vanessa Sneed
Teens Talk With Parents About Sex, Alcohol, Drugs, And Suicide... Or Do They?, Vanessa Sneed
Masters Theses
This study is a comparison of students from two high schools in Illinois. It examines adolescents' perceptions of communication with their parents related to the topics of alcohol, drugs, sex, and suicide. Historically, School 1 is located in a county that has above average teen pregnancy rates. Traditionally, School 2 is located in a county with lower pregnancy rates than School 1. In addition to providing the groundwork for more detailed analysis of alcohol, drugs, sex, and suicide related to specific family communication styles and strategies, this study provides support for intervention programs that promote family communication. The decisions adolescents …
Chorda Tympani Nerve Transection At Different Developmental Ages Produces Differential Effects On Taste Bud Volume And Papillae Morphology In The Rat, Suzanne I. Sollars
Chorda Tympani Nerve Transection At Different Developmental Ages Produces Differential Effects On Taste Bud Volume And Papillae Morphology In The Rat, Suzanne I. Sollars
Psychology Faculty Publications
Chorda tympani nerve transection (CTX) results in morphological changes to fungiform papillae and associated taste buds. When transection occurs during neonatal development in the rat, the effects on fungiform taste bud and papillae structure are markedly more severe than observed following a comparable surgery in the adult rat. The present study examined the potential “sensitive period” for morphological modifications to tongue epithelium following CTX. Rats received unilateral transection at 65, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, or 5 days of age. With each descending age at the time of transection, the effects on the structural integrity of fungiform papillae were more …

Common Names For The Frog Genus Leptodactylus (Amphibia, Anura, Leptodactylidae), Ulisses Caramaschi, Rafael O. De Sá, W. Ronald Heyer
Biology Faculty Publications
Most species of the frog genus Leptodactylus lack common names. Common names are those names used by different human cultures and societies for the species of animals and plants where humans and biota reside together. Often times common names are lacking for Neotropical frogs or are broad in scope. For example, indigenous people may have a single name for frogs that occur on the ground and another name for frogs that occur in shrubs and trees, even though there are many species of ground frogs called by the same name as well as for the tree frogs. Sometimes colonists have …

Are Leptodactylus Didymus And L. Mystaceus Phylogenetically Sibling Species (Amphibia, Anura, Leptodactylidae)?, Rafael O. De Sá, W. R. Heyer, A. Camargo
Biology Faculty Publications
The Leptodactylus fuscus species group consists of 25 currently recognized species; within this species group and distributed throughout the Amazon Basin, Atlantic Forests, Gran Chaco, and cerrados is the L. mystaceus species complex. This species complex consists of L. didymus, L. elenae, L. mystaceus, L. notoaktites, and L. spixi. Adult morphologies have been used to distinguish these species from each other except for L. didymus and L. mystaceus (Heyer, 1978; Heyer et al., 1996). Leptodactylus didymus and L. mystaceus are morphologically indistinguishable; the species are recognizable only by the characteristics of their advertisement calls: non-pulsed in L. didymus and pulsed …

Most species of the frog genus Leptodactylus occur in South America, and all authors who have treated the zoogeography of the genus have concluded that it originated somewhere in South America (e.g., Savage 1982). Savage (1982,518) summarized the historical herpetofaunal units of the Neotropics as follows: "All evidence points to an ancient contiguity and essential similarity of a generalized tropical herpetofauna that ranged over tropical North, Middle, and most of South America in Cretaceous-Paleocene times. Descendents of this fauna are represented today by the South and Middle American tracks (Elements). To the north of this fauna ranged a subtropical-temperate Laurasian …
