27 | Shoham (North): Late Chalcolithic Burial Caves In The Lod Valley, Israel, Edwin C.M. Van Den Brink, Ram Gophna

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

The IAA salvage excavations at Shoham in the Lod Valley revealed four interconnected karstic caves that were used for burial as well as domestic purposes during the Chalcolithic period and the Early Bronze Age I and Intermediate Bronze Age. They are part of an entire system of cemeteries located within the karstic caves in the limestone foothills of the region. The finds include rich assemblages of burial goods, particularly the ceramic ossuaries of the Chalcolithic period. The finds enable a better understanding of Chalcolithic mortuary behavior in the region, and the relationship between the settlements and the cemeteries––the living and …

Effect Of Hormone Replacement Therapy On Hemostatic Variables In Post-Menopausal Women, Hana M. Al-Farra, Sahar K. Al-Fahoum, Mohammed A. Tabbaa

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been increasingly promoted over the last 40 years to improve quality of life, and to reduce the risks of osteoporotic fractures and coronary heart disease (CHD). Recent randomized controlled clinical trials reported that HRT usage is associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and venous thrombosis. We conducted this study to evaluate the mean levels of some hemostatic parameters among groups that differ in estrogen levels and age. METHODS: We studied 150 healthy women in an observational comparative study, divided into 3 groups. Forty women were post-menopausal using HRT for a …

Blind Spots: The Effects Of Information And Stakes On Fairness Bias And Dispersion, James Konow Dec 2005

Blind Spots: The Effects Of Information And Stakes On Fairness Bias And Dispersion, James Konow

Economics Faculty Works

Mounting empirical research provides evidence of fairness bias and its economic and social effects, where fairness bias refers here to a deviation of claims from unbiased justice due to a personal stake. A far less appreciated issue is dispersion of fairness views and claims, which is also important for its effects on disagreements, empirical analysis, and philosophical theories. This study undertakes a systematic analysis of the effects on fairness bias and dispersion of two variables: stakes and information. Most philosophical and social science analyses related to justice and bias associate heightened bias with increased information and, conversely, impartiality with the …

Robust And Efficient Localization Techniques For Cellular And Wireless Sensor Networks, Haseebulla M. Khan Dec 2005

Robust And Efficient Localization Techniques For Cellular And Wireless Sensor Networks, Haseebulla M. Khan

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Localization in wireless networks refers to a collection of tasks that, collectively, determines the location of a mobile user, striving to hide the effects of mobility from the user and/or application. Localization has become an important issue and has drawn considerable attention, as many applications including E-911, cargo tracking, locating patients, location-sensitive billing, etc., require knowledge of the location of user/objects. It was realized, quite a while back, that extending emergency 911-like services (E-911) to continually growing mobile population is one of the extremely important localization applications. The bulk of the proposed solutions to emergency location management in wireless environments …

A Multipurpose Evaluation Strategy For Master Gardener Training Programs, Emelie Swackhamer, Nancy Ellen Kiernan Dec 2005

A Multipurpose Evaluation Strategy For Master Gardener Training Programs, Emelie Swackhamer, Nancy Ellen Kiernan

Journal of Extension

A multipurpose evaluation, developed to measure impact of master gardener training in Pennsylvania, quantitatively measured both learning and increase in confidence, applying data from before and after the training. The authors demonstrate how the same data can be summarized in different ways to better achieve program improvement or demonstrate accountability. The evaluation compiled feedback from a 16-county area, including a majority of trainees in the state. This uniform evaluation strategy eliminated duplication of effort by county educators, provided a high quality tool for the state, and serves as a model for evaluating multi-topic programs taught by many instructors.

Cooperation Between Secondary Agricultural Educators And Extension Agents, Kristina Grage Ricketts, Nick T. Place Dec 2005

Cooperation Between Secondary Agricultural Educators And Extension Agents, Kristina Grage Ricketts, Nick T. Place

Journal of Extension

The study reported here explored cooperation between agriculture teachers and Extension agents and characterized the environment surrounding interdisciplinary cooperation. A researcher-developed questionnaire was used to explore individual perceptions regarding cooperation, behavioral intentions, and individual experiences with cooperation. Means and standard deviations were compared between disciplines. Results indicated that agriculture teachers and Extension agents seemed to have very similar ideas concerning personal perceptions, motivations, and experiences regarding cooperation. Recommendations include joint preparation for teachers and agents, pre-service and in-service incorporation of different facets of cooperation, and assembling an integrated discussion group where future interdisciplinary associations could be discussed.

Training Methods And Needs Related To Volunteer Management Competencies Of Extension 4-H Youth Development Agents, Brenda S. Seevers, Jacqueline S. Baca, Dawn Van Leeuwen

Journal of Extension

The purpose of the descriptive study reported here was to describe professional and personal training experiences related to volunteer management and development. A mail questionnaire was sent to a random sample of 4-H Youth Development Agents nationally. 4-H Youth Development agents reported low-levels of participation in volunteer management professional development activities during a 24-month period. However, when asked to identify specific areas of training needed, a long and varied list was generated. Primary needs identified were in the areas of recruitment and motivation, conflict management and liability issues, evaluation, and time management.

What Motivates Volunteers To Serve In A Youth Literacy Program?, Ryan Schmiesing, Jeff Soder, Susan Russell Dec 2005

What Motivates Volunteers To Serve In A Youth Literacy Program?, Ryan Schmiesing, Jeff Soder, Susan Russell

Journal of Extension

This article examines volunteers' motivation to commit to a successful, yet intensive, youth literacy program. Volunteers in a one-on-one youth literacy mentoring program were motivated by the values function of volunteerism; that is, they volunteered in order to exercise their altruistic values. This is a departure from much of the literature on volunteer motivation, which finds affiliation to be volunteers' primary motivation for volunteering. The article offers suggestions on recruitment methods that promote the value function of volunteerism and will be most successful in attracting individuals willing to make sustained commitments to youth.

Intensity Weighted Ranking: A Methodology For Understanding What Clients Tell Us, Natalie Carroll, Stephen Lovejoy

Journal of Extension

Although rank ordering of issues for needs assessment provides some information, this method does not capture the intensity of respondents concerns. This article presents a method of going beyond rank ordering to study both the intensity of response and uncover priorities for more than a few aggregated issues. Results from a survey of attendees of the Indiana State fair are utilized to illustrate the methodology.
