Travel Assistant Device (Tad) To Help Transit Riders, Philip L. Winters, Sean Barbeau, Nevine Georggi, Rafael Perez, Miguel Labrador

CUTR Research Reports

This proposed application, Travel Assistance Device (TAD), would use multimedia cell phones with built-in global positioning systems to help new transit riders, especially those who are cognitively disabled. Informational prompts will be delivered to the rider in a "just-in-time" method such as triggering the phone to ring, vibrate or deliver an audio message when the rider should pull the stop cord. Automated alarms can be triggered and the travel trainer and/or parent/guardian remotely alerted in case a rider wanders off their pre-determined path. Traditional phone communication is possible between the rider and the trainer which will allow them to guide …

The last American epic

Reflections on the Shaara trilogy

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the publication of Michl Shaara's The Killer Angels, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel which was the basis for Ron Maxwell's film Gettysburg (1993). In conjunction with Random House's release of its commemorative edition of the book, David Madden examines how Michl and Jeff Shaara's trilogy can appropriately be called an American epic. Young Jeff first saw Gettysburg when his father took the family on a visit to the battlefield in 1966. Four years later, Jeff, then eighteen, helped his somewhat frail father as he …

Mutations at five loci named PEANUT1-5 (PNT) were identified in a genetic screen for radially swollen embryo mutants, pnt1 cell walls showed decreased crystalline cellulose, increased pectins, and irregular and ectopic deposition of pectins, xyloglucans, and callose. Furthermore, pnt1 pollen is less viable than the wild type, and pnt1 embryos were delayed in morphogenesis and showed defects in shoot and root meristems. The PNT1 gene encodes the Arabidopsis thaliana homolog of mammalian PIG-M, an endoplasmic reticulum-localized mannosyltransferase that is required for synthesis of the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor. All five pnt mutants showed strongly reduced accumulation of GPI-anchored proteins, suggesting that …

Salamanders of the genus Ambystoma are a unique model organism system because they enable natural history and biomedical research in the laboratory or field. We developed Sal-Site to integrate new and existing ambystomatid salamander research resources in support of this model system. Sal-Site hosts six important resources: 1) Salamander Genome Project: an information-based web-site describing progress in genome resource development, 2) Ambystoma EST Database: a database of manually edited and analyzed contigs assembled from ESTs that were collected from A. tigrinum tigrinum and A. mexicanum, 3) Ambystoma Gene Collection: a database containing full-length protein-coding sequences, 4) Ambystoma Map and Marker …

How Hard Is It To Cheat In The Gale-Shapley Stable Matching Algorithm, Chien-Chung Huang Dec 2005

How Hard Is It To Cheat In The Gale-Shapley Stable Matching Algorithm, Chien-Chung Huang

Computer Science Technical Reports

We study strategy issues surrounding the stable marriage problem. Under the Gale-Shapley algorithm (with men proposing), a classical theorem says that it is impossible for every liar to get a better partner. We try to challenge this theorem. First, observing a loophole in the statement of the theorem, we devise a coalition strategy in which a non-empty subset of the liars gets a better partner and no man is worse off than before. This strategy is restricted in that not everyone has the incentive to cheat. We attack the classical theorem further by means of randomization. However, this theorem shows …

Enforcement Effectiveness In The Canadian Capital Markets, Poonam Puri

Commissioned Reports, Studies and Public Policy Documents

This paper focuses on the fundamental principles underlying effective enforcement by regulators. In particular, this paper analyzes the critical role of the criminal law and judges in effectively addressing capital markets misconduct. It also analyzes how securities regulators can best structure the wide discretion that is afforded to them in designing enforcement strategies and policies that are effective, fair, transparent and accountable. This study also examines the current allocation and division of enforcement responsibilities in respect of the capital markets amongst the numerous entities involved and explores contentious issues related to the current overlapping and concurrent jurisdiction. Finally, this study …

Grading In Games Of Status: Marking Exams And Setting Wages, Pradeep Dubey, John Geanakoplos Dec 2005

Grading In Games Of Status: Marking Exams And Setting Wages, Pradeep Dubey, John Geanakoplos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We introduce grading into games of status. Each player chooses effort, producing a stochastic output or score. Utilities depend on the ranking of all the scores. By clustering scores into grades, the ranking is coarsened, and the incentives to work are changed. We first apply games of status to grading exams. Our main conclusion is that if students care primarily about their status (relative rank) in class, they are often best motivated to work not by revealing their exact numerical exam scores (100,99,…,1), but instead by clumping them into coarse categories ( A,B,C ). When student abilities are disparate, the …

Relational Aggression In Adolescent Girls: Developing Self-Esteem For The Target Girl, Lisa Suzanne Gulch Dec 2005

Relational Aggression In Adolescent Girls: Developing Self-Esteem For The Target Girl, Lisa Suzanne Gulch

Masters Theses

Relational aggression (RA) is rampant in our schools, especially in middle schools across America. The name-calling, rumors, exclusion, eye-rolling, and whispers work to undermine relationships between and amongst girls. Because RA is covert in nature, the behavior goes mostly unnoticed by the adults in these girl’s lives. Society conditions girls, from a very young age, to respond to aggressive behaviors by not being aggressive back; girls are supposed to be nice. The target of relational aggression is especially hurt by this behavior. She generally suffers from low self esteem and poor social skills, and when put up against a clique, …

Human Resources Management: An Exploration Of Strategic Human Resources Management In Michigan Police Organizations, Jason L. Hunt Dec 2005

Human Resources Management: An Exploration Of Strategic Human Resources Management In Michigan Police Organizations, Jason L. Hunt

Masters Theses

There exists in the law enforcement community an antiquated notion that reactive management policies and practices are sufficient for the day-to-day operations of police organizations (Tafoya 1986,1990; Manning, 1997; Anderson, 2000). The law enforcement community remains highly resistant to change and unfortunately maintaining the ‘status quo’ inhibits the ability of police organizations to prepare for the uncertainties of an ever-changing environment (Tafoya, 1990; Manning, 1997; Anderson 2000).

The research presented here demonstrates the need for the law enforcement community to evaluate management strategies and move toward proactive management practices that are promoted from within the organization rather than from outside …

The Use Of Personal Response Transmitters In Extension Settings, Ray Massey, Nick Jaskolski, Laura Sweets

Journal of Extension

Personal response transmitters (PRTs) facilitate effective education by encouraging audience participation and providing the educator with immediate indication of audience comprehension. Their use in an IPM training session in Missouri provided measures of teaching impact, audience knowledge base, and direction for discussion activities. Lessons learned from initial activities taught that things such as room setup, random distribution of the PRTs, question formation, technical assistance, and familiarity with possible responses were critical to their successful use.
