Building Assets For Safe, Productive Lives: A Report On A Workshop On Adolescent Girls' Livelihoods, Population Council Jan 2005

Building Assets For Safe, Productive Lives: A Report On A Workshop On Adolescent Girls' Livelihoods, Population Council

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

For the 1.5 billion adolescents currently living in developing countries (325 million of them living on less than US$1 a day), the transition to becoming economically productive is particularly pivotal. Girls face numerous challenges in making this transition successfully, since in many settings females have less access than males to critical resources such as secondary school education, credit, land, training, and technology, and their labor is often unrecognized and unremunerated. A growing number of organizations and institutions have been using a livelihoods approach (which centers around the capabilities, assets, and activities required for gaining a means of living) to reach …

Education Of Adult Children And Mortality Of Their Elderly Parents In Taiwan, Zachary Zimmer, Linda G. Martin, Mary Beth Ofstedal, Yi-Li Chuang Jan 2005

Education Of Adult Children And Mortality Of Their Elderly Parents In Taiwan, Zachary Zimmer, Linda G. Martin, Mary Beth Ofstedal, Yi-Li Chuang

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Research shows an older adult’s education is strongly associated with mortality. But in societies such as Taiwan, where families are highly integrated, the education of family members may be linked to survival. Such may be the case in settings where there are large gaps in levels of education across generations and high levels of resource transfers between family members. This Population Council study employs 14 years of longitudinal data from Taiwan to examine the combined effects of education of older adults and their adult children on mortality outcomes of older adults. Results indicate that educational levels of both parent and …

Equitable Considerations For Families With Same-Sex Parents: Russell V. Bridgens, 264 Neb. 217, 647 N.W.2d 56 (2002), And The Use Of The Doctrine Of In Loco Parentis By Nebraska Courts, Katie A. Fougeron Jan 2005

Equitable Considerations For Families With Same-Sex Parents: Russell V. Bridgens, 264 Neb. 217, 647 N.W.2d 56 (2002), And The Use Of The Doctrine Of In Loco Parentis By Nebraska Courts, Katie A. Fougeron

Nebraska Law Review

“Family” as a social entity has metamorphosed into various forms, expanding the boundaries of its definition beyond those that existed traditionally. The Nebraska Supreme Court’s opinion in Russell v. Bridgens illustrates Nebraska’s venture into the relatively uncharted territory of the legal relationships between same-sex parents and their children. This Note explores the law of second-parent adoption as it has developed among the states, the facts and opinions of Russell, and the doctrine of in loco parentis as applied by Nebraska and other state courts. This Note argues that, in light of the willingness of Russell’s concurring judges to …

Putting The Comprehension In Metacomprehension, Jennifer Wiley, Thomas D. Griffin, Keith Thiede Jan 2005

Putting The Comprehension In Metacomprehension, Jennifer Wiley, Thomas D. Griffin, Keith Thiede

Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of the present piece is to integrate some current theories of text comprehension with the body of work on metacomprehension, and especially the calibration of comprehension monitoring. This paper explores some important methodological and conceptual issues, inspired by current theories in the text comprehension literature, which suggest that the nature of the texts used for metacomprehension studies may be a critical, and currently unrecognized, factor that should be considered. First, we need to re-examine what we mean by “comprehension,” and how we should measure it. There are important differences between memory for text and comprehension of text that …

Understanding The Delayed-Keyword Effect On Metacomprehension Accuracy, Keith Thiede, John Dunlosky, Thomas D. Griffin, Jennifer Wiley Jan 2005

Understanding The Delayed-Keyword Effect On Metacomprehension Accuracy, Keith Thiede, John Dunlosky, Thomas D. Griffin, Jennifer Wiley

Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The typical finding from research on metacomprehension is that accuracy is quite low. However, recent studies have shown robust accuracy improvements when judgments follow certain generation tasks (summarizing or keyword listing), but only when these tasks are performed at a delay rather than immediately after reading (Thiede & Anderson, 2003; Thiede, Anderson & Therriault, 2003). The delayed and immediate conditions in these past studies confounded the delay between reading and generation tasks with other task lags, such as the lag between multiple generation tasks and the lag between generation tasks and judgments. The first two experiments disentangle these confounded manipulations …

Design Of Web-Based Courses For Secondary Students, Michael K. Barbour

Education Faculty Publications

This article reports the initial findings of a study that investigated design characteristics of a Web-based distance education programme for rural secondary school students who were unable to access a full range of courses at their school. Discovering the characteristics perceived to be important by course developers and teachers of Web-based courses along with the perceptions of the secondary students themselves was central in this study, which was guided by the research question: What characteristics do developers, teachers, and students perceive as important for an effectively designed Web-based course for secondary school students?

This study was the initial portion of …

Liability Of Professional And Volunteer Mental Health Practitioners In The Wake Of Disasters: A Framework For Further Considerations, Tarik Abdel-Monem, Denise Bulling Jan 2005

Liability Of Professional And Volunteer Mental Health Practitioners In The Wake Of Disasters: A Framework For Further Considerations, Tarik Abdel-Monem, Denise Bulling

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

Qualified immunity from civil liability exists for acts of disaster mental health (DMH) practitioners responding to disasters or acts of terrorism. This article reviews current legal regimens dictating civil liability for potentially wrongful acts of DMH professionals and volunteers responding to disasters. Criteria are proposed to inform determinations of civil liability for DMH workers in disaster re-sponse, given current legal parameters and established tort law in relevant areas. Specific consider-ations are examined that potentially implicate direct liability of DMH professionals and volunteers, and vicarious liability of DMH supervisors for actions of volunteer subordinates. The relevance of pre-event DMH planning and …

Symmetry And Symmetry-Breaking: An Approach To Understanding Beauty, Carol Bier Jan 2005

Symmetry And Symmetry-Breaking: An Approach To Understanding Beauty, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Considering the relationship of symmetry and beauty, the author examines three textiles from the collection of Doris Duke at Shangri La in Honolulu. Referring to abstract expressionism of the 20th century as antithetical to symmetry, and the Arts & Crafts Movement of the 19th century as countering the insistency of industrial mass production, Bier explores the relative roles of symmetry and symmetry-breaking in the construction of three embroideries (called suzani, after the Persian and Tajik word for “needlework”), using as her point of departure a recent research initiative, the Shangri La Suzani Project. The study of colors, motifs, stitches, designs …

Survey Of Changes In Science Teacher Preparation Programs Responding To Performance-Based Science Standards, Steven Gilbert, Jon E. Pedersen, Cheryl Mason Jan 2005

Survey Of Changes In Science Teacher Preparation Programs Responding To Performance-Based Science Standards, Steven Gilbert, Jon E. Pedersen, Cheryl Mason

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This study presents the results of two web-based surveys of 23 science teacher preparation programs having functional standards-based candidate performance assessment systems recognized by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) through the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Our goal was to determine the degree and nature of changes made to these programs as they sought to gain NSTA-NCATE program recognition. The results indicate that most programs made major changes as they implemented performance assessment systems, now pay more attention to documenting candidate performances in all areas of concern covered by the standards, and believe the changes …

Capitalizing On Stereotypes, Christine Hass Jan 2005

Capitalizing On Stereotypes, Christine Hass

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

While walking through the isle of never ending glossy magazine covers, one can easily notice the differences between men's and women's magazines. It is not something that people notice right away, but it is something worth looking at. Obviously, the magazine industry creates the covers of its magazines, as well as the articles, to attract people to buy its magazines.

Through flashy covers and screaming tag lines men and women alike are overwhelmed with pressure to buy various magazines. Magazines almost stare at you from the stands at supermarket check out aisles. Words such as make-up, sex, beer, diet, and …

Auditory Brainstem Responses In The Eastern Screech Owl: An Estimate Of Auditory Thresholds, Elizabeth F. Brittan-Powell, Bernard Lohr, D. Caldwell Hahn, Robert J. Dooling Jan 2005

Auditory Brainstem Responses In The Eastern Screech Owl: An Estimate Of Auditory Thresholds, Elizabeth F. Brittan-Powell, Bernard Lohr, D. Caldwell Hahn, Robert J. Dooling

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The auditory brainstem response (ABR), a measure of neural synchrony, was used to estimate auditory sensitivity in the eastern screech owl (Megascops asio). The typical screech owl ABR waveform showed two to three prominent peaks occurring within 5 ms of stimulus onset. As sound pressure levels increased, the ABR peak amplitude increased and latency decreased. With an increasing stimulus presentation rate, ABR peak amplitude decreased and latency increased. Generally, changes in the ABR waveform to stimulus intensity and repetition rate are consistent with the pattern found in several avian families. The ABR audiogram shows that screech owls hear best between …

Factor Structure And Construct Validity Of The Anxiety Sensitivity Index Among Island Puerto Ricans, Jennifer A. Cintrón, Michele M. Carter, Sonia Suchday, Tracy Sbrocco, James Gray Jan 2005

Factor Structure And Construct Validity Of The Anxiety Sensitivity Index Among Island Puerto Ricans, Jennifer A. Cintrón, Michele M. Carter, Sonia Suchday, Tracy Sbrocco, James Gray

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

The factor structure and convergent and discriminant validity of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI) were examined among a sample of 275 island Puerto Ricans. Results from a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) comparing our data to factor solutions commonly reported as representative of European American and Spanish populations indicated a poor fit. A subsequent exploratory factor analysis (EFA) indicated that a two-factor solution (Factor 1, Anxiety Sensitivity; Factor 2, Emotional Concerns) provided the best fit. Correlations between the ASI and anxiety measures were moderately high providing evidence of convergent validity, while correlations between the ASI and BDI were significantly lower providing …

As Two Become One : The Lived Experience Of A Twinless Twin, Jody Ness

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Twins enter life as a pair and are often viewed so in later life. After the death of a co-twin, twins feel like they have lost part of themselves, leaving them alone, often without professional help. No nursing research has provided insight into the experience of a twin who has lost their co-twin. The purpose of this research was to explore and describe the lived experience of a twin who has lost their co-twin. The aim was to generate an understanding of the unique bond and sense of loss experienced by twinless twins. Phenomenology and Attachment Theory were utilized to …

Special Masters In State Court Complex Litigation: An Available And Underused Case Management Tool, Lynn Jokela, David F. Herr

William Mitchell Law Review

This article examines the role masters have played in litigation and explores the benefits that might be obtained from the greater use of masters in the future. The FJC survey of federal judges appointing special masters concluded that special masters were “extremely or very effective.” The FJC study is an empirical survey of the effectiveness of special masters, and it includes commentary from judges regarding their experience after appointing special masters. These benefits include better, faster, and fairer resolution of litigation in the cases in which masters are used, as well as an easing of the burdens these cases place …

Note: Capping Noneconomic Damages In Medical Malpractice Suits Is Not The Panacea Of The “Medical Liability Crisis”, Melissa C. Gregory Jan 2005

Note: Capping Noneconomic Damages In Medical Malpractice Suits Is Not The Panacea Of The “Medical Liability Crisis”, Melissa C. Gregory

William Mitchell Law Review

This note explores the history behind the rising costs of medical malpractice insurance rates and the responsive state legislative proposals to limit noneconomic damages. The current state of health care liability and the recent federal proposals that include caps on noneconomic damages are then discussed. This note analyzes the reasons why the federal government should not cap noneconomic damages, primarily because: (1) states are better able to regulate health care, (2) noneconomic damages are not the determinate cause of rising medical malpractice insurance rates, and (3) caps infringe on equal protection guarantees by limiting compensation of medical malpractice victims. This …
