Traveling The Boundaries Of Statelessness: Global Passports And Citizenship, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol, Matthew Hawk Jan 2005

Traveling The Boundaries Of Statelessness: Global Passports And Citizenship, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol, Matthew Hawk

UF Law Faculty Publications

An independent global citizenship without a local component and in the absence of the much-feared global government creates two concerns. One, an individual may imperil the rights of others, without a structure that can impose sanctions for the heinous conduct. Two, an individual's rights may be imperiled, and there may be no entity to provide protection. This essay proposes a model of a formal global citizenship that will alleviate these concerns and prove both practically and theoretically feasible. The model flows from the concept of dual or multiple nationality and offers global citizenship only as an elective nationality. Such citizenship …

Varied Initial Requests And Their Effectiveness Using The Door-In-The-Face Technique, Darin Challacombe Jan 2005

Varied Initial Requests And Their Effectiveness Using The Door-In-The-Face Technique, Darin Challacombe

Psychology Faculty Publications

Predictability of compliance using a varied initial request with the door-in-the-face technique is examined. It is hypothesized that a larger initial request will produce less compliance than a smaller initial request respective of the desired request. The experimenter approached students at Fort Hays State University and presented them with a request pattern: a door-in-the-face style request asking participants to volunteer for community service with the size of the initial request being the variable of interest. The results show that although there was a significant result of overall compliance, the variable of size for an initial request showed no significance.

Court-Connected Mediation Compared: The Cases Of Argentina And The United States, Timothy K. Kuhner Jan 2005

Court-Connected Mediation Compared: The Cases Of Argentina And The United States, Timothy K. Kuhner

Faculty Publications By Year

This Article presents and compares data collected in Argentina and the United States during each country's initial experience with court-connected mediation. In the period 1990 to 1999, Argentina and the United States began ambitious court-connected mediation programs and achieved notable results. A comparative analysis of these results yields insights that should prove useful to countries contemplating the adoption of mediation laws. This analysis exposes how two very different mandatory mediation schemes have worked in practice and explores how the circumstances under which mediation is transplanted to a new place can influence its effects.

I begin by analyzing the rationales for …

Evolution Of Rules In A Common Law System: Differential Litigation Of The Fee Tail And Other Perpetuities, Jeffrey E. Stake Jan 2005

Evolution Of Rules In A Common Law System: Differential Litigation Of The Fee Tail And Other Perpetuities, Jeffrey E. Stake

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This paper presents a variation on the Rubin-Priest theory of the evolution of common law rules toward efficiency. It offers the fee tail and similar restraints on alienation as examples of how inefficient rules can lead to inefficient uses of land, which cause owners to seek the help of courts in freeing their lands from the inefficient constraints. In other words, there is a feedback loop that provides courts with opportunities to overturn inefficient common law rules. We should expect this common law drift toward efficiency to be stronger for property rules than for tort rules. Because efficient property rules …

Understanding Roi Metrics For Software Test Automation, Naveen Jayachandran Jan 2005

Understanding Roi Metrics For Software Test Automation, Naveen Jayachandran

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Software test automation is widely accepted as an efficient software testing technique. However, automation has failed to deliver the expected productivity more often than not. The goal of this research was to find out the reason for these failures by collecting and understanding the metrics that affect software test automation and provide recommendations on how to successfully adopt automation with a positive return on investment (ROI). The metrics of concern were schedule, cost and effectiveness. The research employed an experimental study where subjects worked on individual manual and automated testing projects. The data collected were cross verified and supplemented with …

Liberation Theology Of Disability And The Option For The Poor, Scot Danforth Jan 2005

Liberation Theology Of Disability And The Option For The Poor, Scot Danforth

Education Faculty Articles and Research

A liberation theology of disability provides a spiritual discourse that unites a critical analysis of the economic dimensions of disability oppression with an appreciation for the lived experience of disabled persons. This paper builds from prior liberation theology scholarship and the Catholic theological concept called the preferential option for the poor to articulate a liberation theology of disability marked by critical social analysis, humility, hope, and love.

Parent-Teacher Collaboration For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders: The Role Of Teacher Training, Amber Hays '05 Jan 2005

Parent-Teacher Collaboration For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorders: The Role Of Teacher Training, Amber Hays '05

Honors Projects

Over twenty years of research has demonstrated that collaborative relationships between parents and teachers are invaluable in enhancing the educational success of all students and are especially meaningful when students have ASD (e.g., Ruble & Dalrymple, 2002). However, collaborative relationships are often difficult to develop because many educators remain uninformed about ASD (Helps, Newsom-Davis, & Callias, 1999) and untrained in working with parents (Lazar & Slostad, 1999). The present study evaluated the ability of an intervention to (a) encourage more positive attitudes toward parent-teacher collaboration, (b) increase general knowledge about ASD, and (c) boost comfort, competence, and confidence levels with …

Ethanol Effects On Reward Value Judgment Following Infusions Into The Amygdala: Implications For Emotional Processing, Stephanie M. Brewer '05 Jan 2005

Ethanol Effects On Reward Value Judgment Following Infusions Into The Amygdala: Implications For Emotional Processing, Stephanie M. Brewer '05

Honors Projects

Alcohol, when delivered systemically, leads to impaired performance on a variety of tasks, including emotionally-laden or reward value tasks. It is also known that lesions to the amygdala produce emotional or reward value deficits. However, it is unknown whether the emotional deficits observed after alcohol ingestion are due to alcohol's direct effect on the amygdala. The present study examined the effects of alcohol when infused directly into the amygdala on emotional memory and judgment. Eight male Long-Evans rats were trained on a behavioral task to associate one sweetness level with a reward and another sweetness level with no reward. Once …

Concepts Of Addiction: Assessing The Beliefs Of Addiction In University And Treatment Center Populations, Krystle M. Balhan '05 Jan 2005

Concepts Of Addiction: Assessing The Beliefs Of Addiction In University And Treatment Center Populations, Krystle M. Balhan '05

Honors Projects

This study sought to identify differences in the beliefs about addiction between a sample of university students (N=81) and a sample of clients diagnosed with substance abuse or dependence from a drug/alcohol treatment center (N=14). It was hypothesized that treatment center clients would present beliefs that correspond to the disease concept of addiction (Jellinek 1960), while members of the university sample would express more personal or environmental attitudes towards addiction. To assess these potential differences, a survey questionnaire based on the Addiction Belief Inventory (ABI) was administered to both samples (Luke, Ribisl, Walton, and Davidson, 2002). Results of t-tests showed …
