Evaluating Efficacy Of Parent/Toddler Language Playgroups: Implementing A Researcher-Practitioner Partnership, Caitlin B. Burke

Honors Capstones

This project developed guidelines for speech-language pathologists to use when making data-driven decisions on whether to keep a child in services or to dismiss the child from direct therapy. The purpose was to develop an action plan to guide theclinician in decision-making. Three questions were posed: 1. What should be evaluated? 2. Which tools should be used and how often? 3. How could these results be interpreted to inform clinical decision-making? To do this, a literature review was conducted and recommendations were discussed with a speech-language pathologist and a clinical researcher working at this university. Proposed guidelines focused on total …

Social Work Values And Hospital Culture: An Examination From A Competing Values Framework, Amanda Evans Jan 2005

Social Work Values And Hospital Culture: An Examination From A Competing Values Framework, Amanda Evans

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to assess the perceptions of social workers employed in Florida hospitals in relation to the core values of their profession and the alignment of those values within the culture of their current work setting. The conceptual framework for the study was from organizational behavior theory specific to culture, values, and trust. The Competing Values Framework (Cameron & Quinn, 1999) provided a method to distinguish co-existing competing values within an organization. The research findings indicated that 65% of the professional social workers who participated in the study perceived that the core values of their profession …

Union Impact On Police Expenditures In Florida, Laurence Putchinski Jan 2005

Union Impact On Police Expenditures In Florida, Laurence Putchinski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The continued steady growth of public sector unions compels public administrators to understand the influence labor organizations exert upon local governments. The following study demonstrates the extent of union influence upon police expenditures in Florida. Union influence not only increases total police expenditures and personal services expenditures, it also causes operating expenses to rise. Union influence is less pronounced, and possibly even non-existent in capital outlays expenditures because of possible lack of interest on the part of the union in this area and also because of the existence of economically predetermined policies regarding capital outlays such as vehicle purchases. Public …

The Model Law For Refugees: An Important Step Forward?, Arun Sagar, Farrah Ahmed Jan 2005

The Model Law For Refugees: An Important Step Forward?, Arun Sagar, Farrah Ahmed

National Law School of India Review

This note analyses the proposed Model National Law for Refugees, which has been drafted for South Asia, with the basic premise that India's past practice in dealing with refugee situations has not been sufficiently consistent, and there is a need for a uniform legislation. The note compares the Model Law with existing international instruments and other national legislations, and concludes that the adoption of the law would be an important step in guaranteeing fair treatment of refugees in India due to its implementation of a uniform status-determination regime and incorporation of rights for refugees. At the same time, the law …

From Ambedkar's Idealism To Mayawati's Symbolism: Tracing The Contours Of The Dalit Movement, Sushila Rao Jan 2005

From Ambedkar's Idealism To Mayawati's Symbolism: Tracing The Contours Of The Dalit Movement, Sushila Rao

Socio-Legal Review

This article briefly delves into history to trace the ideological contours of institutionalised protest against untouchability and the discernible shift towards a quest for a distinct identity in the colonial era, particularly with the emergence of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as its leader. In this context, it then seeks to highlight the recurring themes as well as contradictions in Ambedkar's thought, and assesses how a combination of playing up of these incongruates by vested interests as well as other factors have been successful in preventing the realization of his vision of emancipation. Finally, the paper attempts to elucidate some of the …

Dietary Supplements And Sports Performance: Minerals, Melvin H. Williams Jan 2005

Dietary Supplements And Sports Performance: Minerals, Melvin H. Williams

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

Minerals are essential for a wide variety of metabolic and physiologic processes in the human body. Some of the physiologic roles of minerals important to athletes are their involvement in: muscle contraction, normal hearth rhythm, nerve impulse conduction, oxygen transport, oxidative phosphorylation, enzyme activation, immune functions, antioxidant activity, bone health, and acid-base balance of the blood. The two major classes of minerals are the macrominerals and the trace elements. The scope of this article will focus on the ergogenic theory and the efficacy of such mineral supplementation. Researchers at the Florida Mental Health Institute, University of South Florida, under contract to the Pinellas County Human Services Department, collected data over several months in 2004 from people in Pinellas County for a human services needs assessment. Horseless Horses: Car Dealing And The Survival Of Retail Bargaining, Steven M. Gelber Jan 2005

Horseless Horses: Car Dealing And The Survival Of Retail Bargaining, Steven M. Gelber

History

News reports suggest that in the near future, electronic chips on every item in a store will allow consumers to be charged for purchases automatically by simply walking out through the door.1 No checkout clerks will ask the shoppers if they found everything they were looking for; no checkout robots will ask if the customers would prefer to hear their oddly inflected voices speak in English or Spanish; nothing tangible will mark the exchange of value. This invisible transaction will be the latest evolutionary step away from the complex face-to-face negotiation between buyer and seller that once marked almost …

Programmatic Implications Of A Cost Study Of Home-Based Care Programs In South Africa, Rick Homan, Catherine Searle Jan 2005

Programmatic Implications Of A Cost Study Of Home-Based Care Programs In South Africa, Rick Homan, Catherine Searle

HIV and AIDS

The HIV/AIDS epidemic has meant that an increasing number of chronically ill people need ongoing assistance with care and support. Programs providing home-based care (HBC) services are a key component of the response to HIV/AIDS. However, few programs are using operations research, including cost studies, to decide what services to provide and how to structure their services. In 2004, the Horizons Program undertook a study of six HBC programs from different South African provinces to provide key information to NGOs, government ministries, donors, and the programs themselves to inform decisions about service delivery. The study analyzed the cost of HBC …
