Pilot Acceptance, Compliance, And Performance With An Airborne Conflict Management Toolset, Nathan A. Doble, Richard Barhydt, Dr. Karthik Krishnamurthy

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005

A human-in-the-loop experiment was conducted at the NASA Ames and Langley Research Centers, investigating the En Route Free Maneuvering component of a future air traffic management concept termed Distributed Air/Ground Traffic Management (DAG-TM). NASA Langley test subject pilots used the Autonomous Operations Planner (AOP) airborne toolset to detect and resolve traffic conflicts, interacting with subject pilots and air traffic controllers at NASA Ames. Experimental results are presented, focusing on conflict resolution maneuver choices, AOP resolution guidance acceptability, and performance metrics. Based on these results, suggestions are made to further improve the AOP interface and functionality.

Effects Of A Final Approach Runway Occupancy Signal (Faros) On Pilots’ Flight Path Tracking, Traffic Detection, And Air Traffic Control Communications, John Helleberg Jan 2005

Effects Of A Final Approach Runway Occupancy Signal (Faros) On Pilots’ Flight Path Tracking, Traffic Detection, And Air Traffic Control Communications, John Helleberg

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2005

Eighteen pilot participants with varying experience levels flew 36 approaches in a medium fidelity cockpit simulator. Eighteen baseline trials were flown with a standard Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) and 18 trials were flown with the proposed Flashing PAPI (FPAPI). The results showed a significant increase in lateral tracking error with the FPAPI as compared to the PAPI trials, but no increase in vertical tracking errors. There was also a trend toward an increase in the number of radio communications with the FPAPI. Pilots were able to determine runway occupancy status and land or go-around as required in both the …

Lifting The Pall Of Orthodoxy: The Need For Hearing A Multitude Of Tongues In And Beyond The Sexual Education Curricula At Public High Schools, Carlo A. Pedrioli Jan 2005

Lifting The Pall Of Orthodoxy: The Need For Hearing A Multitude Of Tongues In And Beyond The Sexual Education Curricula At Public High Schools, Carlo A. Pedrioli

Faculty Scholarship

When public high schools promote heterosexuality at the cost of denying sexual minority youth the opportunity to learn about minority sexualities, these schools contribute to the disastrous situation in which many sexual minority high school students find themselves. This approach, which many public high schools take, is unnecessarily destructive and warrants prompt change. Instead of helping to perpetuate many of the challenges that sexual minority students face in high school, public high schools can and need to help address these challenges. To establish the case for such a position, this article begins by presenting the plight of many sexual minority …

An Implied Warranty Of Freedom From Sexual Harassment: The Solution For Harassed Tenants Where The Fair Housing Act Has Failed, Theresa Keeley Jan 2005

An Implied Warranty Of Freedom From Sexual Harassment: The Solution For Harassed Tenants Where The Fair Housing Act Has Failed, Theresa Keeley

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Although sexual harassment in the workplace is recognized as a problem, sexual harassment in housing has largely been ignored. When confronting sexual harassment in housing, courts have borrowed standards for sexual harassment in the workplace. Criticism of this practice exists; however this Article examines the real source of the problem: bringing sexual harassment claims under the Fair Housing Act. Specifically, this Article shows how and why the Fair Housing Act fails to address the problem of sexual harassment in housing. To remedy this failure, this Article proposes an "implied warranty of freedom from sexual harassment" that both restores the tenant's …

Women In Science: Biological Factors Should Not Be Ignored, Kingsley R. Browne Jan 2005

Women In Science: Biological Factors Should Not Be Ignored, Kingsley R. Browne

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that biological and psychological differences between sexes contribute to the underrepresentation of women in certain fields, challenging the assumption that equal representation is always the appropriate goal. It critiques the notion that disparities necessarily indicate systemic flaws, emphasizing that freedom of choice should allow for different occupational outcomes without implying discrimination.

Fitting The Forum To The Fuss With Sticky Defaults: Failure In The Market For Dispute Resolution Services?, Maurits Barendrecht, Berend R. De Vries Jan 2005

Fitting The Forum To The Fuss With Sticky Defaults: Failure In The Market For Dispute Resolution Services?, Maurits Barendrecht, Berend R. De Vries

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

"Fitting the forum to the fuss" - i.e., finding the optimal way to deal with every dispute - is an appealing slogan of proponents of alternative dispute resolution ("ADR"). The phrase also summarizes the contract one would expect rational disputants to make once they are embroiled in a conflict they cannot resolve together. Disputants can "buy" dispute resolution services, such as various forms of court intervention, mediation, or arbitration. Agreeing to a contract to buy such services together with an opponent, however, is likely to be difficult. These difficulties are assessed in this article. The barriers to dispute resolution are …

The Myth Of The Gladiator And Law Students' Negotiation Styles, Melissa L. Nelken Jan 2005

The Myth Of The Gladiator And Law Students' Negotiation Styles, Melissa L. Nelken

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

"Shark." "Hired gun." The popular view is that lawyers are, by and large, cut-throat competitors who take the ethical obligation of zealous advocacy on behalf of their clients to the extreme, heedless of the cost to others or to society as a whole. The adversarial system (with its winners and losers), law school teaching, and the portrayal of lawyers in popular media, all feed this stereotype. The focus on litigation promotes misperceptions about what most lawyers actually do. Lawyers make deals and resolve virtually all litigated matters short of trial, often through negotiation. Studies of lawyers' behavior in negotiation over …

A Novel Dengue Fever (Df) And Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (Dhf) Analysis Using Artificial Neural Network (Ann), F. Ibrahim, M.N. Taib, W.A.B. Wan Abas, C.C. Guan, S. Sulaiman

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Dengue fever (DF) is an acute febrile viral disease frequently presented with headache, bone or joint and muscular pains, and rash. A significant percentage of DF patients develop a more severe form of disease, known as dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF). DHF is the complication of DF. The main pathophysiology of DHF is the development of plasma leakage from the capillary, resulting in haemoconcentration, ascites, and pleural effusion that may lead to shock following defervescence of fever. Therefore, accurate prediction of the day of defervescence of fever is critical for clinician to decide on patient management strategy. To date, no known …

An Institution In Search Of Excellence: Lessons Learnt, H. Fatimah, A. Halimah

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

This is a report of the strategies adopted by the University of Malaya (UM), Malaysia, to address the issues and complexities involved in its search for excellence in teaching and learning, research and service. The story is told how the university sought accreditation through the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and how by uniting their heartbeats to breathe as one provides a platform for some individuals to rise to the occasion thereby adding strength to the team's struggle. The paper concludes that obtaining ISO certification is only a means to an end and, although the initiative towards change may have come …

Occasions And Motivations For Gift-Giving: A Comparative Study Of Malay And Chinese Consumers In Urban Malaysia, Md Nor Othman, Fon Sim Ong, Anna T.M. Teng

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

The main purpose of this study is to examine the occasions and motivations for gift-giving behaviour amongst urban Malaysian consumers. In addition, a comparison between the gift-giving behaviours of the two major ethnic groups in Malaysia, namely the Malays and the Chinese, will be made. The study utilized the survey approach. The sample consisted of 300 respondents. Findings showed that most of the respondents buy gifts during birthdays and weddings. When the motivations of gift giving were examined, the study found that the most preferred motivation for gift giving is for practical purposes. Comparing the behaviour of the two ethnic …

Pixel-Based Skin Color Detection Technique, I. Zaqout, R. Zainuddin, S. Baba Jan 2005

Pixel-Based Skin Color Detection Technique, I. Zaqout, R. Zainuddin, S. Baba

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

In this paper we have used a simple and efficient color-based approach to segment human skin pixels from complex background, using a 2-D histogram-based approach. For skin segmentation, a total of 446,007 skin samples from the training set is manually cropped from the RGB color images, to calculate three lookup tables based on the relationship between each pair of the triple components R, G, B. Derivation of skin classifier rules from the lookup tables are based on how often each attribute value (interval) occurs, and their associated certainty values. One of the simplest features used for the human face detection …

Attorneys' Perceptions Of Child Witnesses With Mental Retardation, Rebecca Nathanson Jan 2005

Attorneys' Perceptions Of Child Witnesses With Mental Retardation, Rebecca Nathanson

Scholarly Works

Children with mental retardation are more likely to be abused than the general population, yet are often denied access to the justice system. Research on children without mental retardation has revealed skepticism as to their reliability as witnesses in the court of law. Even more so, children with mental retardation face the issue of credibility because of their age and disability. This study assesses attorneys' perceptions of child witnesses with mental retardation. Thirty-nine criminal attorneys completed a 33-item questionnaire designed to assess their opinions of the abilities of adults and of children with and without mental retardation to recall and …

What Does Religion Have To Do With Freedom Of Conscience?, Steven D. Smith Jan 2005

What Does Religion Have To Do With Freedom Of Conscience?, Steven D. Smith

University of Colorado Law Review

Although the framers of the First Amendment chose to protect "the free exercise of religion" and deleted language about 'freedom of conscience, " a widely-held modern assumption maintains that constitutional protection should extend to conscience generally, not just to religious exercise. But is this extension defensible? This article considers three classic rationales for religious freedom-the "separate spheres" rationale, the 'futility" rationale, and the "higher duties" rationale-and asks whether they justify protection of non-religious conscience. The article concludes that all of the classic rationales are vulnerable to serious objections. However, a somewhat different rationale, which might be called the "personhood" rationale, …

Child Custody, Religious Practices, And Conscience, Kent Greenwalt Jan 2005

Child Custody, Religious Practices, And Conscience, Kent Greenwalt

University of Colorado Law Review

This article asks to what extent considerations relating to religion should figure in custody disputes. One inquiry is whether the kind of religious life that a parent plans for his or her child should figure in the decision whether to grant custody to that parent. The article focuses on a religious life that involves very substantial deprivation no after-school activities, no television, no pets, no reading except schoolwork and the Bible-from an ordinary secular perspective. A second inquiry is whether one parent of a divorced couple should be able to prevent the other parent from exposing a child to various …

Making Research A Requirement Of Treatment: Why We Should Sometimes Let Doctors Pressure Patients To Participate In Research, David Orentlicher Jan 2005

Making Research A Requirement Of Treatment: Why We Should Sometimes Let Doctors Pressure Patients To Participate In Research, David Orentlicher

Scholarly Works

In this article, Professor David Orentlicher argues that when a patient could be offered one of multiple established treatments, doctors should be able to offer treatment only if the patient agrees to participate in research aimed at determining which of the treatments is most effective. Making treatment conditional on research participation will help researchers complete badly needed studies.

Ritual For Revolution, Michael Degani Jan 2005

Ritual For Revolution, Michael Degani

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2003 - 2009

In the last 15 to 20 years, the failure of Communism as a viable revolutionary project has turned many on the Left to its historical rival: Anarchism. Merging with environmental discourses like deep ecology and the struggle for indigenous rights, Anarcho-Primitivism models its utopian discourse on ethnographic descriptions of hunter gatherer societies and mythologized notions of the "Noble Savage." Furthermore, its adherents retain high rates of visibility in the burgeoning antiglobalization movement, notorious for their black uniform and tactics of property destruction. My paper critically and pragmatically engages their attempts to invoke "the Primitive" as a metaphor for resisting the …
