Assessing Male Body Image: Development And Validation Of The Appearance Inventory For Men (Aim), Daniel Agliata Jan 2005

Assessing Male Body Image: Development And Validation Of The Appearance Inventory For Men (Aim), Daniel Agliata

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite evidence suggesting that appearance dissatisfaction among men is on the rise, a void in appropriate forms of body image assessment for males remains. The current study reviews the literature on male body image, identifying the shortcomings and limitations of prior research, and introduces a psychometrically sound, male-specific body image assessment. An initial item-generation study was used to poll 253 males to inquire about their concerns, emotions, behaviors, and related body image topics to be sorted and synthesized into items for scale inclusion. The newly developed Appearance Inventory for Men (AIM) was then administered to 330 males and submitted to …

Holding Media Responsible For Deceptive Weight-Loss Advertising, Chester S. Galloway, Herbert Jack Rotfeld, Jef I. Richards Jan 2005

Holding Media Responsible For Deceptive Weight-Loss Advertising, Chester S. Galloway, Herbert Jack Rotfeld, Jef I. Richards

West Virginia Law Review

In Fall 2002, the Federal Trade Commission held a Workshop exploring the problem of misleading weight-loss promotional pitches. After the agency spent decades cleaning up deceptive advertising, the weight-loss industry continues to be replete with such tactics. In an attempt to more aggressively attack those deceptions, the FTC used the Workshop as a forum to suggest that media should play a more active role in screening ads for diet products and programs. Some saw this as an implied threat that the agency may begin holding media liable for publishing those ads. Media protest that this forces them into the de …

Guest Editorial: Special Issue On Software, Maintenance And Evolution, Panos K. Linos Jan 2005

Guest Editorial: Special Issue On Software, Maintenance And Evolution, Panos K. Linos

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Software maintenance and evolution continues to play a vital role in the development of software systems. It is widely acknowledged that the majority of development effort, and thereby expenditure, is allocated to postinitial release activity. This activity, which takes place after the software has seen its first release, is known as software maintenance (or software evolution).

Modeling Mechanisms, Stuart Glennan Jan 2005

Modeling Mechanisms, Stuart Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Philosophers of science increasingly believe that much of science is concerned with understanding the mechanisms responsible for the production of natural phenomena. An adequate understanding of scientific research requires an account of how scientists develop and test models of mechanisms. This paper offers a general account of the nature of mechanical models, discussing the representational relationship that holds between mechanisms and their models as well as the techniques that can be used to test and refine such models. The analysis is supported by study of two competing models of a mechanism of speech perception.

Speeded Retrieval Abolishes The False Memory Suppression Effect: Evidence For The Distinctiveness Heuristic, C. S. Dodson, Amanda C. Gingerich Jan 2005

Speeded Retrieval Abolishes The False Memory Suppression Effect: Evidence For The Distinctiveness Heuristic, C. S. Dodson, Amanda C. Gingerich

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

We examined two different accounts of why studying distinctive information reduces false memories within the DRM paradigm. The impoverished relational encoding account predicts that less memorial information, such as overall famililarity, is elicited by the critical lure after distinctive encoding than after non-distinctive encoding. By contrast, the distinctiveness heuristic predicts that participants use a deliberate retrieval strategy to withhold responding to the critical lures. This retrieval strategy refers to a decision rule whereby the absence of memory for expected distinctive information is taken as evidence for an event’s nonoccurrence. We show that the typical false recognition suppression effect only occurs …

Economic Migration And Justice, Harry Van Der Linden Jan 2005

Economic Migration And Justice, Harry Van Der Linden

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Our main thesis is that the U.S. has a duty of justice to adopt an open border policy with regard to economic migrants because it is significantly responsible for the unjust social and economic conditions that bring such migrants to its borders. From this perspective, President Bush’s recent “guest worker” proposal is morally objectionable because it is designed more to serve U.S. business interests than the interests of the migrants. We address three objections to opening borders: it will worsen the economic condition especially of low-skilled native workers; it will harm developing countries by increasing the so-called “brain drain”; and …

Differential Effects Of Alzheimer's Disease And Huntington's Disease On The Performance Of Mental Rotation, Tara T. Lineweaver, David P. Salmon, Mark W. Bondi, Jody Corey-Bloom Jan 2005

Differential Effects Of Alzheimer's Disease And Huntington's Disease On The Performance Of Mental Rotation, Tara T. Lineweaver, David P. Salmon, Mark W. Bondi, Jody Corey-Bloom

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

he ability to spatially rotate a mental image was compared in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD; n = 18) and patients with Huntington's disease (HD; n = 18). Compared to their respective age-matched normal control (NC) group, the speed, but not the accuracy, of mental rotation abnormally decreased with increasing angle of orientation for patients with HD. In contrast, the accuracy, but not the speed, of rotation abnormally decreased with increasing angle of orientation for patients with AD. Additional analyses showed that these unique patterns of performance were not attributable to different speed/accuracy trade-off sensitivities. This double dissociation suggests that …

No Animals Were Harmed...: Protecting Chimpanzees From Cruelty Behind The Curtain, Lorraine L. Fischer Jan 2005

No Animals Were Harmed...: Protecting Chimpanzees From Cruelty Behind The Curtain, Lorraine L. Fischer

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Many people, interested in the way animals are treated in the entertainment industry, rely on the American Humane Association's end credit disclaimer, "No Animals Were Harmed During the Making of this Production" to quiet their concerns about animal mistreatment and to avoid supporting films or television programs that injure animals. However, the AHA's end credit disclaimer is misleading because it suggests that projects with the disclaimer are cruelty free. Even if a film or television show receives the "No Animals Were Harmed..." designation, chimpanzees cannot become "actors" and appear on the stage or screen without being subject to severe physical …

Toward True Shalom Bayit: Acknowledging Domestic Abuse In The Jewish Community, Lydia M. Belzer Jan 2005

Toward True Shalom Bayit: Acknowledging Domestic Abuse In The Jewish Community, Lydia M. Belzer

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the intersection of domestic abuse and Jewish law, focusing on how religious teachings, such as the concept of shalom bayit (peace in the home), are often misused to justify remaining in abusive relationships. It highlights the barriers women face in obtaining a religious divorce (get) and the stigma associated with domestic abuse (shonda), which discourages victims from seeking help. The analysis critiques the misuse of religious laws and advocates for reinterpretation to prioritize victims' safety and well-being. The article emphasizes the need for education, awareness, and improved support systems within the Jewish community to address these issues …

Defining Judicial Inactivism: Models Of Adjudication And The Duty To Decide, Chad M. Oldfather Jan 2005

Defining Judicial Inactivism: Models Of Adjudication And The Duty To Decide, Chad M. Oldfather

Faculty Publications

Debates over the proper function of courts tend to focus on delineating the outer limits of judicial authority. One of the primary concerns in these debates is the phenomenon often described as judicial activism. Although there is no fixed notion of precisely what constitutes judicial activism, the core idea is a concern about judges overstepping the bounds of their role, and somehow or other doing more than is proper.

What might be characterized as judicial inactivism, in contrast, has generally been overlooked. This is somewhat curious. Underlying concern about judicial inactivism is a recognition of the possibility that judges might …

At The Crossroads Of Title Ix And A New "Idea": Why Bullying Need Not Be "A Normal Part Of Growing Up" For Special Education Children, Paul M. Secunda

Faculty Publications

In 21st century America, bullying of children by other children at school continues at epidemic levels. Organizations as diverse as the Department of Health and Human Services (through the National Institutes of Health and Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)), the National Crime Prevention Council, the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center, and the National Education Association, have all targeted school bullying and its consequences in various initiatives and campaigns over the last several years. These organizations argue that if schools and parents do not properly intervene to prevent bullying, the long-term ramifications for both the bully and the bullied …

Relevance Of Age And Special Needs In Initial Development Phases Of A Child Neglect Scale, Stephanie Ann Stowman Jan 2005

Relevance Of Age And Special Needs In Initial Development Phases Of A Child Neglect Scale, Stephanie Ann Stowman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Currently, there is a lack of standardized procedures in Child Protective Services (CPS) agencies in regards to risk assessment for child neglect. Available child neglect assessment measures often lack empirical support or are limited by response bias due to the focus on parental responsibility. This study utilized interviews with CPS employees to obtain descriptions of child neglect situations. A questionnaire was then generated based on the interviews and distributed to additional CPS employees. The questionnaire examined respondents' likelihood to substantiate each item as neglect, the frequency each item occurred and the perceived level of harm for each item across multiple …
