Polydesigns And Causal Inference, Fan Li, Constantine E. Frangakis Jun 2005

Polydesigns And Causal Inference, Fan Li, Constantine E. Frangakis

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In an increasingly common class of studies, the goal is to evaluate causal effects of treatments that are only partially controlled by the investigator. In such studies there are two conflicting features: (1) a model on the full cohort design and data can identify the causal effects of interest, but can be sensitive to extreme regions of that design's data, where model specification can have more impact; and (2) models on a reduced design (i.e., a subset of the full data), e.g., conditional likelihood on matched subsets of data, can avoid such sensitivity, but do not generally identify the causal …

Academic Freedom, Tenure, And Student Evaluations Of Faculty: A Response To Haskell And His Critics, Edith J. Cisneros-Cohernour

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

I comment on the strengths and limitations of Haskell's article and provide a critical review of his arguments about the negative impact of SEF on tenure and other administrative decisions. I object to the limited evidence supporting the claim that the use of student evaluations per se challenges academic freedom.

Response Shift And Glycemic Control In Children With Diabetes., Julie A Wagner Jun 2005

Response Shift And Glycemic Control In Children With Diabetes., Julie A Wagner

SoM Articles

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the scale recalibration construct of response shift and its relationship to glycemic control in children with diabetes.

METHODS: At year 1, thirty-eight children with type 1 diabetes attending a diabetes summer camp participated. At baseline and post-camp they completed the Problem Areas in Diabetes (PAID) questionnaire. Post-camp, the PAID was also completed using the 'thentest' method, which requires a retrospective judgment about their baseline functioning. At year 2, fifteen of the original participants reported their HbA1c.

RESULTS: PAID scores significantly decreased from baseline to post-camp. An even larger difference was found …

Bishops 2005, Carl Milofsky Jun 2005

Bishops 2005, Carl Milofsky

Northern Ireland Archive

This is the third time the two retired Bishops visited our classes. In the first 15 minutes of each tape Edward Daly, the Catholic Bishop, and James Mehaffey, the Anglican Bishop, briefly tell their life histories. This tape has two significant substantive aspects. First, there is discussion of integrated education in Northern Ireland and how the Bishops view this educational innovation. Bishop Daly is critical of what he considers mechanical procedures to force integration. He thinks to achieve peace in Northern Ireland root political problems must be addressed. The second important content on this tape is Bishop Daly's account of …

Teaching Pro-Social Skills To Help Young Children At Risk To Succeed In Inclusive Education, Susan M. Weston Jun 2005

Teaching Pro-Social Skills To Help Young Children At Risk To Succeed In Inclusive Education, Susan M. Weston

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the pro-social skills program that the Valley Park Pre-K students have been exposed to. Ten typically developing 4-year-olds participated in this research study. A review of observations revealed that this pro-social skills program reduced problem behavior. These children greatly improved in their social skills. They were extremely cooperative and attentive during the teaching activities and lessons. They all willingly participated and were very interested in partaking in the games. I believe that this was a very successful program and could be implemented and integrated in other preschool classrooms and …

Auditory And Visual Correlates Of The Processing Of Gapping Structures In Adults, Tara Hansen Jun 2005

Auditory And Visual Correlates Of The Processing Of Gapping Structures In Adults, Tara Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare event-related potential (ERP) effects of speech processing and effects in sentence reading elicited by sentences containing gapping structures, or a "missing" verb. N400 and P600 waveforms were collected in 20 adults between 18 and 30 years of age. Two experiments were conducted with each participant. In the two experiments ERP recordings were collected as sentences, some containing gapping structures, were presented to the subjects. In one experiment sentences were presented through headphones in sentences spoken at normal rate and with normal intonation. In the second experiment sentences with the same gapping structures …

Virtual Cadaver Navigation System: Using Virtual Reality For Learning Human Anatomy, Abhijit V. Lothe Jun 2005

Virtual Cadaver Navigation System: Using Virtual Reality For Learning Human Anatomy, Abhijit V. Lothe

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The use of virtual reality (VR) for visualization can revolutionize medical training by simulating real world medical training procedures through intuitive and engaging user interface. Existing virtual reality based visualization systems for human anatomy are based on 3D surface and volumetric models and simulative systems based on model libraries. The visual impact as well as facilitation for learning are inadequate in such systems. This thesis research is aimed at eliminating such inadequacies by developing a non-immersive virtual reality system framework for storage, access and navigation of real human cadaveric data. Based on this framework, a real time software system called …
