Knowledge And Perception Of North Dakota Nurses Regarding Palliative Care, Nancy Joyner Aug 2005

Knowledge And Perception Of North Dakota Nurses Regarding Palliative Care, Nancy Joyner

Theses and Dissertations

Palliative care, also known as comfort care, involves the holistic care of patients when curative treatment is not effective. The principal factors of palliative care include the aggressive treatment of pain and other symptoms, including physical, psychological, emotional, social and spiritual problems. Nurses spend more time with patients and their families than any other health care professional, placing them in a position to provide palliative care in a variety of different settings. This requires nurses to have a sound knowledge base in this specialty. Not all nurses, however, are adequately prepared for or comfortable with palliative care.

The purpose of …

Optimizing Bispectral Index (Bis) Use In The Intensive Care Unit: Development Of A Procedure And Skill Competency Validation For Critical Care Nurses, Twyla G. Kouba

Theses and Dissertations

The Bispectral Index (BIS) technology developed by Aspect Medical Systems is Food and Drug Administration approved and commercially available to monitor the effects of anesthetics and sedatives on the level of consciousness in the Operating Room, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and in special procedure environments where sedation is administered. Sedation management is a challenge in the ICU with serious consequences resulting from oversedation or undersedation. A literature review provides evidence that the BIS is a reliable, valid tool for objective sedation assessment in the ICU. However, critical care nurses must be able to first identify which patient populations can benefit …

Comparison Of Epidural Analgesia Vs. Intravenous Opioids In Providing Post-Operative Pain Control And Decreased Length Of Stay In Patients Undergoing Abdominal Hysterectomy, Dane C. Hanson

Theses and Dissertations

Post-operative pain control continues to be a concern among anesthesia providers and patients alike. The ability to control the pain by utilizing different treatment modalities has been a point of interest by anesthesia providers in order to provide the best care possible to their patients. The use of epidural anesthesia/analgesia (EA) has increased in the last two decades; however, it still seems to be underutilized for several major abdominal surgeries such as total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH). The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of epidural anesthesia or analgesia in the postoperative period provides better pain control …

Product Development Knowledge-Processing System, Jiefei Qiu

Theses

This thesis develops a methodology that integrates Quality Function Deployment (QFD), Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) and Design Structure Matrix (DSM) to address the problem of analyzing, interpreting, and transforming the knowledge data flow during the product development process.

A product development process is the sequence of steps an enterprise takes to conceive, design, and commercialize a product. The general process includes: Planning, Concept Development, System-Level Design, Detail Design, Testing and Refinement, and Production Ramp-Up. One way to think about the development process is as a knowledge-processing system.

Prior to this study, there are few articles integrating TRIZ and …

Recognition And Reconciliation In Paradise Lost, Mary Allen Aug 2005

Recognition And Reconciliation In Paradise Lost, Mary Allen

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In Paradise Lost, we learn that a crucial element to attaining happiness is recognizing the eternal presence of God in ourselves and in others. Lack of recognition, particularly on the part of Satan and of Eve, causes separation from God, which leads these characters as well as those with whom they are in relationships, to untold misery. Both make the mistake of choosing to separate themselves from their source of wisdom and happiness - Satan by rebelling against God, and Eve by rejecting both her relationship with Adam and with God when she is deceived by Satan.

I will argue …

Translated Opinions

Facts: The appellant, a Bedouin, stabbed his sister to death. Initially, he said that the reason why he did this was that his sister, who was unmarried, intended to travel alone to Egypt, and this would dishonour the family. At his trial, the appellant testified that in addition his sister had made a statement questioning his paternity of his children. The appellant claimed that the killing of his sister was the result of provocation, and therefore he should be convicted of manslaughter rather than murder. Inter alia he argued that the court should take into account the fact that in …

The Scientist-Practitioner On The Front Line: Development And Formalization Of Evidenced-Based Interventions On The Battlefield, Alan L. Peterson, Jeffrey A. Cigrang, Richard P. Schobitz

School of Professional Psychology Faculty Publications

Nathan (2005) and Petronko (2005) provide excellent commentaries on our three case studies (Cigrang, Peterson, & Schobitz, 2005) describing the use of prolonged imaginal exposure for the secondary prevention of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In this response, we note that future research should build upon the lessons and experiences of these cases and include larger sample sizes, additional measures (anxiety, depression, grief, quality of life, subjective units of distress ratings), the development of a flexible treatment manual, and formal measures of Acute Stress Disorder (ASD). Future research should also target process measures such as patient acceptability of the treatment and …

The School Counseling Psychology Program: A Qualitative Study., Daniel Vern Barnes

Theses and Dissertations

The service role and functions of school counseling and school psychology have been discussed extensively for several decades. The literature from each professional discipline is replete with calls to expand the training and service capacity of these school professionals. Simultaneously calls are made for even broader educational reform as it specifically relates to student pupil services. From within this context an integrated school counseling and school psychology program known as the School Counseling Psychology Program was organized and administered at Brigham Young University. This qualitative dissertation study highlights the perceived strengths and limitations of this integrated training program. The impact …

Expanding The Science Of Successful Aging: Older Adults Living In Continuing Care Retirement Communities (Ccrcs), Kathryn H. Petrossi Jul 2005

Expanding The Science Of Successful Aging: Older Adults Living In Continuing Care Retirement Communities (Ccrcs), Kathryn H. Petrossi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rowe and Kahns theory of successful aging identifies three main components of aging successfully: reducing the risk of disease and disability, maintaining high cognitive and physical function, and engagement with life. While there is compelling evidence that suggests the legitimacy of this concept in the 50-75 year old community dwelling population, three areas of expansion are necessary: 1.) programmatic research; 2.) extending the existing research samples to include older samples and those living in continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs); and 3.) the integration of data collection and analysis to move beyond investigation of just one successful aging outcome to include …

Determining The Probable Responsibility Of The Head Coach And Fitness Coach For Match Outcomes Using Bayes’ Theorem, Mahfoodh Faleh Hassan, Abdul Amir Hashim Allawi, Firas Hadi Khalaf

Modern Sport

Bayes' Theorem represents a fundamental principle in probability and statistics. It describes how to update the probability of a hypothesis based on new evidence. It provides a mathematical rule for reversing conditional probabilities, allowing us to determine the probability of a cause given an observed effect. Bayes' Theorem is also considered one of the key tools in machine learning applications. This study uses Bayes' Theorem to determine the probability of a team's loss and the percentage responsibility of the head coach and fitness coach. Its importance lies in developing a probabilistic model to reveal the likelihood of defeat and the …

Changes In The Perception And Sense Of Self Of Individuals With Aphasia: An Ethnographic Study, Erline Vieira Nakano Jul 2005

Changes In The Perception And Sense Of Self Of Individuals With Aphasia: An Ethnographic Study, Erline Vieira Nakano

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Little is known about the perceived changes in identity and sense of self in individuals with aphasia. Seminal research using qualitative methods and personal narratives has been conducted in England regarding the experience of living with aphasia (see for instance Parr, Byng, Gilpin & Ireland, 1999; Parr, Duchan & Pound, 2003; Byng, Pound & Hewitt, 2004), but the use of such methodologies is still emergent in the United States. In addition, despite the great achievements of the disabilities movement in countries such as the U.S. and the U.K., individuals with aphasia have remained largely at the margins due to the …
