Critical Literacy Vs. Reading Programs: Schooling As A Form Of Control, Roberto E. Bahruth Aug 2005

Critical Literacy Vs. Reading Programs: Schooling As A Form Of Control, Roberto E. Bahruth

Literacy, Language, and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the United States, despite years of educational research demonstrating the ineffectiveness and harm caused by reading programs based upon a behaviorist paradigm, political mandates of state and federal programs insist upon their continued use. One might conclude that this insistence is born out of ignorance, however, it seems clear that the populations most harmed by these programs are the poor and minorities. Privileged class students are also harmed because of the "literalcy" (shallow "literacy") these programs produce. I discuss the politics of literacy and language programs in the United States and how they serve to oppress as they reproduce …

An Exploratory Study Of The Experiences Of Gay, Lesbian, And Bisexual Fraternity And Sorority Members Revisited, Douglas N. Case, Grahaeme A. Hesp, Charles G. Eberly

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The lead author questioned over 500 self-identified gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) fraternity and sorority members to assess their reasons for joining; how their membership affected their sexual identity development and intimate relationships; the degree of homophobia and heterosexism encountered; how sexual orientation affected the quality of their fraternal experiences; and the level of acceptance or rejection they faced. Many respondents were in the early phases of sexual identity development at the time they joined, and most chose to conceal their sexual orientation from their fellow members. This study details the reactions from fellow members, assesses satisfaction with the fraternity …

Expectations & Experiences Of Resettlement: Sudanese Refugees’ Perspectives On Their Journeys From Egypt To Australia, Canada And The United States, Martha Fanjoy, Hilary Ingraham, Cyrena Khoury, Amir Osman Aug 2005

Expectations & Experiences Of Resettlement: Sudanese Refugees’ Perspectives On Their Journeys From Egypt To Australia, Canada And The United States, Martha Fanjoy, Hilary Ingraham, Cyrena Khoury, Amir Osman

Faculty Journal Articles

A key center for refugeebased activity is the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) regional office, located in Cairo. In recent years, this unit has referred approximately 4,000 recognized refugees per year for resettlement to the United States, Canada, Australia and a number of other smaller receiving countries, making it the largest such program in the world. But despite the size of the refugee population and the resettlement program in Cairo, there has been little research conducted into the expectations and experiences of the refugees themselves on this process. These perspectives could be significant determinants of success in the …

Beginnings Of U.S. Pragmatism, Sociology, And Empire: Dewey, Mead, And The Philippine Problem, 1900-1930s, Peter Chua Aug 2005

Beginnings Of U.S. Pragmatism, Sociology, And Empire: Dewey, Mead, And The Philippine Problem, 1900-1930s, Peter Chua

Faculty Publications, Sociology

This paper examines how the social psychology of U.S. pragmatists John Dewey and George Herbert Mead shapes how early U.S. sociology position itself on questions of U.S. empire and geo-political dominance. It focuses also on how pragmatist thought influences how 1920s Chicago sociologists Robert Park and Emory Bogardus produced symbolic interactionist theories and studies on U.S. race and international relations. This paper makes several interventions in the history of U.S. sociological theory. It re-examines the history of U.S. sociology and the philosophy of pragmatism through the lens of empire, rather than simply a myopic looking-glass of the “race problem.” This re-examination …

The Species-Norm Account Of Moral Status, Scott D. Wilson Aug 2005

The Species-Norm Account Of Moral Status, Scott D. Wilson

Between the Species

Many philosophers have argued against Singer’s claim that all animals are equal. However, none of these responses have demonstrated an appreciation of the complexity of his position. The result is that all of these responses focus on one of his arguments in a way that falls victim to another. This paper is a critical examination of a possible response to the full complexity of Singer’s position that derives from the work of Carl Cohen, Kathleen Wilkes, and F. Ramsey. On this response, a being’s moral status depends not on the capacities and abilities she does in fact have, but instead …

Do Dilemmas On A Moral Judgment Task Elicit Feeling States Known To Affect Information Processing?, Brian Barger Aug 2005

Do Dilemmas On A Moral Judgment Task Elicit Feeling States Known To Affect Information Processing?, Brian Barger

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The role of emotion in the process of moral decision making has become of interest in recent years (Haidt, 2001). At the same time, emotion researchers are beginning to understand that different basic emotion states (i.e., joy, anger) lead to different information processing styles (Aspinwall, 1998; Nabi, 2003). Skoe, Eisenberg, and Cumberland (2002) found evidence that the feeling states of anger and sympathy are present in moral judgment tasks. Unfortunately, aside from anger, Skoe et al. (2002) primarily focused on emotion terms that have not been experimentally linked to changes in information processing. This study extended the findings of Skoe …

Adolescent Dating Experiences Described By Latino College Students, Marcela Raffaelli Aug 2005

Adolescent Dating Experiences Described By Latino College Students, Marcela Raffaelli

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Latino college students (M age = 21.4 years) completed self-report surveys assessing adolescent dating experiences. Compared to young men (n = 69), young women (n = 97) had more limitations placed on them by parents as adolescents and began dating later. No gender difference in timing of the first serious relationship emerged. More young women had their first relationship with a Latino, and having a Latino boyfriend was associated with older partner age. In multivariate analyses, parental level of education was a stronger correlate of early dating experiences than generational status, and stronger findings emerged for young women than young …

A Study Of Manual Mine Clearance, Gichd Aug 2005

A Study Of Manual Mine Clearance, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

Manual mine clearance is the fundamental tenet of mine action, yet has never been thoroughly analysed. The GICHD has managed a study into manual mine clearance analysing the history, management, methodologies and systems in use, risk assessment and risk management of the process and product and costings of manual mine clearance programmes. The report published shows that, whilst safety has improved significantly since the early days of mine clearance, there are still room for improvements in many areas. The study identifies positive examples of innovation and novel techniques that improve productivity and ultimately value for the donor and end user …

An Analysis Of Rhythm Systems In The United States: Their Development And Frequency Of Use By Teachers, Students, And Authors; And Relation To Perceived Learning Preferences, Paul Charles Varley Aug 2005

An Analysis Of Rhythm Systems In The United States: Their Development And Frequency Of Use By Teachers, Students, And Authors; And Relation To Perceived Learning Preferences, Paul Charles Varley

Dissertations

One of the issues facing music educators is the way in which they teach students to read rhythms accurately. Using the current educational philosophy of differentiation, or teaching a student by appealing to their preferred learning style, as a backdrop, the researcher proposed that music educators tend to teach rhythms using a limited number of systems, thereby failing to utilize many of the available systems.

The researcher examined the published rhythm systems dating back to the early nineteenth century, surveyed band students in grades 7-12 concerning their preferences in learning rhythms and their learning styles, surveyed music teachers concerning their …

Toward A Theory Of Faithfulness: An Exploratory Study Of The Motivational Factors Related To Human Capital Retention In The Christian School, Colleen Mclaughlin Aug 2005

Toward A Theory Of Faithfulness: An Exploratory Study Of The Motivational Factors Related To Human Capital Retention In The Christian School, Colleen Mclaughlin

Faculty Dissertations

This exploratory, qualitative study utilizing the grounded theory approach addressed the research question of what are the factors Christian teachers feel, believe, and/or understand are meaningful and motivating to their decision to continue teaching in a Christian school? This focus on human capital retention in the Christian school was necessary due to a concern for teachers leaving the profession within the first few years of their careers, thus lowering the quality of education provided. The teachers participating in the study shared their feelings, thoughts, stories, and experiences through the use of in-depth interviews. The resulting analysis provided the opportunity for …
