Retest Effects In Operational Selection Settings: Development And Test Of A Framework, Filip Lievens, Tine Buyse, Paul R. Sackett Dec 2005

Retest Effects In Operational Selection Settings: Development And Test Of A Framework, Filip Lievens, Tine Buyse, Paul R. Sackett

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study proposes a framework for examining the effects of retaking tests in operational selection settings. A central feature of this framework is the distinction between within-person and between-person retest effects. This framework is used to develop hypotheses about retest effects for exemplars of 3 types of tests (knowledge tests, cognitive ability tests, and situational judgment tests) and to test these hypotheses in a high stakes selection setting (admission to medical studies in Belgium). Analyses of within-person retest effects showed that mean scores of repeat test takers were one-third of a standard deviation higher for the knowledge test and situational …

Online Support For Multivariate Integration, Shujun Li Dec 2005

Online Support For Multivariate Integration, Shujun Li

Dissertations

In this dissertation, we present an online problem solving environment for multivariate numerical integration. To build an environment for users with various backgrounds, we address issues of Web interface support for end-users, remote application programming interfaces for distributed system programmers, visualization of multivariate integrand functions for problem analysis, and highly efficient integration methods. Compared to previous implementations, our new load balancing schemes increase the scalability of parallel integration and hence are suitable for large scale computations. A parallel integration service, called PI service, was implemented based on Web services technologies to support both remote integration and remote visualization. The multivariate …

Increasing Blood Glucose Monitoring In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes: Effects Of A Prompt, Stephen J. Albrecht Dec 2005

Increasing Blood Glucose Monitoring In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes: Effects Of A Prompt, Stephen J. Albrecht

Dissertations

A series of single-subject designs (AB, ABAB) were used to assess the effects of an antecedent prompting procedure (i.e., prompts) on blood glucose monitoring in young individuals diagnosed with type I diabetes. Prompts were delivered through portable, automated paging technology. Frequency of blood glucose checks was obtained across meter, baseline, and intervention phases. Metabolic control was assessed by obtaining blood glucose levels for each check across baseline and intervention phases, and hemoglobin (HbA1c) values at study entry and follow-up. Results indicated that the prompt increased blood glucose monitoring for three participants, and metabolic control improved for 2 participants when the …

Real-Time 3d Image Visualization System For Digital Video On A Single Chip, Nader I. Rafla Dec 2005

Real-Time 3d Image Visualization System For Digital Video On A Single Chip, Nader I. Rafla

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Implementation of a real-time image visualization system on a reconfigurable chip (FPGA) is proposed. The system utilizes an innovative stereoscopic image capture, processing and visualization technique. Implementation is done as a two stage process. In the first stage, the stereo pair is captured using two image sensors. The captured images are then synchronized and sent to the second stage for fusion. A controller module is developed, designed, and placed on the FPGA for this purpose. The second stage is used for reconstruction and visualization of the 3D image. An innovative technique employing dual-processor architecture on the same single FPGA is …

Kant On "Why Must I Keep My Promise?", B. Sharon Byrd, Joanchim Hruschka Dec 2005

Kant On "Why Must I Keep My Promise?", B. Sharon Byrd, Joanchim Hruschka

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Article claims that for Kant a contractual obligation generates a universal right, meaning a right against everyone. Accordingly, a right to performance of a contract is more similar to a right in rem than to a right in personam, and failing to perform a contract is more similar to theft than to moral failure to do as promised. Part I shows that for Kant accepting a promise means taking possession of the promisor's choice to commit an act in the future. Part II explains why it is possible to acquire someone else's choice and how one does so in …

Rational Choice And Reasonable Interactions, Bruce Chapman Dec 2005

Rational Choice And Reasonable Interactions, Bruce Chapman

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Game theory probably offers the most well-known account of how rational agents interact in strategic situations. The rational thought processes that are involved, while enormously sophisticated, remain very private for each agent. Less well known is the alternative account that is offered by law and legal theory, an account where agents interact, and understand their interaction, under the idea of public (or objective) reasonableness. This Article argues, using some simple examples, that the legal account does better than the game theoretic account in explaining the actual levels of cooperation and coordination we observe across rational individuals in strategic situations.

A Contractarian Approach To Unconscionability, Horacio Spector Dec 2005

A Contractarian Approach To Unconscionability, Horacio Spector

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In this paper I discuss two nonpaternalistic defenses of the doctrine of unconscionability in contract law. The first approach, proposed by Seana Shiffrin, relies on the moral ban to collaborate with other agents' immoral plans. Because this prohibition falls also on the judge, she must refrain from enforcing unfair or exploitative contracts. The second approach regards the unconscionability doctrine as one limitation on freedom of contract that rational contractors would choose in the course of adopting the fundamental terms of social cooperation. I assess the implications and merits of the two approaches. 'The contractarian approach is capable of justifying procedural …

Tanks In The Streets: Suvs, Design Defects, And Ultrahazardous Strict Liability, Kevin Case Dec 2005

Tanks In The Streets: Suvs, Design Defects, And Ultrahazardous Strict Liability, Kevin Case

Chicago-Kent Law Review

SUV rollover crashes have been well-publicized and thoroughly litigated. Less attention has been paid to the lethal risks created by SUVs—particularly the latest "behemoth" SUVs like Hummers—to the occupants of other vehicles and pedestrians. Due to the design of SUVs, which are stiffer, heavier, and ride higher than cars, a collision between an SUV and a passenger car often results in catastrophic damage and injury to the occupants of the car, particularly when an SUV strikes a car broadside. Moreover, the design features of SUVs that create these dangers provide no utility or value to society. The "benefit" provided by …

Natural Rights And Two Conceptions Of Promising, Peter Vallentyne Dec 2005

Natural Rights And Two Conceptions Of Promising, Peter Vallentyne

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Does one have an obligation to keep one's promises? I answer this question by distinguishing between two broad conceptions of promising. On the normativized conception of promising, a promise is made when an agent validly offers to undertake an obligation to the promisee to perform some act (i.e., give up a liberty-right in relation to her) and the promisee validly accepts the offer. Keeping such promises is morally obligatory by definition. On the non-normativized conception, the nature of promising does not conceptually entail any connection with the obligation to keep promises. A promise might be understood, for example, as an …

On The Existence And Stability Of Carbon -Based Silicon Fullerenes -A Density Functional Theoretic Study, Aravind Srinivasan Dec 2005

On The Existence And Stability Of Carbon -Based Silicon Fullerenes -A Density Functional Theoretic Study, Aravind Srinivasan

Physics Theses - Archive

The electronic and geometric properties of silicon-carbon fullerene-like nanostructures with two, four, six, twenty and twenty four carbon atoms on the surface of the Si60 cages by substitution, as well as inside the cage at various symmetry orientations have been studied within the generalized gradient approximation to density functional theory (GGA-DFT). The Perdew-Wang 91 (PW91) functional has been used to treat exchange and correlation energies. Full geometry and spin optimizations have been performed using Gaussian 03 suite of programs and the LANL2DZ basis set. Thus for the silicon atom, the Hay-Wadt pseudopotential with the associated basis set are used for …

The Eggshell Structures Of Ringed Turtle - Doves (Streptopelia Risoria), Natalie Ellen Hubbard Dec 2005

The Eggshell Structures Of Ringed Turtle - Doves (Streptopelia Risoria), Natalie Ellen Hubbard

Biology Theses - Archive

The avian egg provides nutrients and protects the growing embryo from physical and microbial harm. Structures fundamental to the protection are the membrane layers, which are tightly meshed networks of collagen fibers, and the eggshell, which is composed of calcite crystals, (CaC03). The eggs of Ringed Turtle-Dove and commercially bred chickens were selected for the study. Eggs of commercially bred chickens are twice in length and width of the dove eggs. Features analyzed are components of quality and strength of eggshells included shell thickness, membrane thickness, and concentration and size of vesicles. A comparative study of the bird eggs was …

Medicaid Third-Party Liability And Claims For Restitution: Defining The Proper Role For The Tort System In Regulating The Food Industry, Coby Warren Logan Dec 2005

Medicaid Third-Party Liability And Claims For Restitution: Defining The Proper Role For The Tort System In Regulating The Food Industry, Coby Warren Logan

Journal of Food Law & Policy

This comment contends that tort liability can complement legislative and administrative government regulation of the food industry, providing sellers and manufacturers of food with an incentive to prevent consumers from over-consumption and becoming obese. Specifically, this comment supports the proposition that after government regulations are promulgated by Congress, claims should be allowed by state attorneys general to recoup Medicaid costs incurred in treating health conditions and illnesses caused by obesity.

Factors Impacting Development Time For Online Postsecondary Instruction., Karen Hughes Miller 1945-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focused on the development and validation of a web-based survey instrument designed to measure faculty perceptions on the importance of 24 variables that contribute to the facilitation of online postsecondary course development. It builds on the work of Lee (2001, 2002) and Easton (2003) who also investigated the faculty perceptions of the importance of specific variables in the development and delivery on online postsecondary education. Knowing which variables contribute most to online course development is important because it helps faculty members estimate the time needed to develop particular courses by considering which variables apply to their situation; and …

Indentation Response Of Polymer Films And Aircraft Wiring With Polymer Insulation., Kaushik Bindiganavile Nagendran 1979-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The airline regulatory communities are interested in methods that can access degradation in the polymer insulation of aging aircraft wiring. This study investigates the response of bulk polymer films and aircraft wiring under indentation; changes in the behavior of the material may provide an indication of degradation. For this study, indentation tests are performed using a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA), which provides excellent force and displacement sensitivity and can test materials at a wide range of temperatures. Each indentation test consists of two test phases: loading and relaxation. During loading, the indenter is displaced into the material at a constant …

A Local Model Of Writing Program Assessment : Fourteen Community College Faculty Define And Evaluate Writing Proficiency., Richard Anthony Butsch 1956-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The introduction to this doctoral dissertation is an argument for locating Writing Across the Curriculum programs on the community-college campus for several reasons, among them the proximity of the disciplines on the community college campus, the increasingly underprepared community college student, and movements toward accountability and assessment at the local and state levels. As an example of what a WAC program may accomplish in the area of program assessment, which developed from WAC proper in the last decade of the last century, Chapters One, Two and Three present data I collected from fourteen faculty volunteers who gave up a beautiful …
