Detection In Dispositional Change In Romantic Relationships: A Dynamic Explanation, Sarah G. Bodin Jan 2005

Detection In Dispositional Change In Romantic Relationships: A Dynamic Explanation, Sarah G. Bodin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Many studies have been devoted to investigating the process by which individuals make dispositional attributions about the people that they encounter. A surprisingly small number of studies have been directed at examining the process by which individuals may detect change in their impressions of people once they have been formed. In fact, traditional social psychology literature suggests that individuals will engage in a number of processes to maintain or improve, rather than change, their initial attributions. With such alarming divorce rates, it is quite obvious that romantic couples are detecting change in their perceptions of one another. However, romance and …

Determination Of Sex Ratios And Their Relationship To Nest Temperature Of Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta, L.) Hatchlings Produced Along The Southeastern Atlantic Coast Of The United States, Kimberly. Blair

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The sex ratios of hatchling loggerheads (Caretta caretta) were determined to provide robust assessments of regional and seasonal contributions of males and females to the population. Hatchlings from nests along the Atlantic coastline were raised to 120 g, sexed laparoscopically and verified histologically. Sex ratios differed at the beach, subseason, and subpopulation levels. There was no difference in overall sex ratios between the two study years. Average nest temperature and incubation durations were not accurate sex ratio correlates. Temperatures that produced female biased or male biased sex ratios overlapped in ranges with those producing a single sex. I found that …

Development And Importance Of Brachiation: How Enclosure Design Affects Activity Patterns In Captive Gibbons (Hylobates Lar), Michele R. Schwartz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Knowing how to keep captive gibbons can have an impact on the field of anthropology and, in turn, improve the care of these animals in captivity. A brachiating structure designed for enriching gibbon habitat was constructed on one of two islands in a captive enclosure. The data collected was analyzed on time spent brachiating compared to time spent on the ground. A key factor in collecting data was the placement of the observer with respect to the proximity of the gibbons being observed. In this study the gibbons spent more time on the grass when observing them at close range. …

Diterpene Biosynthesis In Early Ontogenetic Stages Of Pseudopterogorgia Elisabethae And Pseudopterogorgia Bipinnata, Maia Stapleton Mukherjee Jan 2005

Diterpene Biosynthesis In Early Ontogenetic Stages Of Pseudopterogorgia Elisabethae And Pseudopterogorgia Bipinnata, Maia Stapleton Mukherjee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

There is growing evidence that secondary metabolites isolated from some marine invertebrates may actually be produced by a symbiont. The capacity of early ontogenetic stages of Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae and Pseudopterogorgia bipinnata to biosynthesize biologically active and pharmaceutically important diterpenes was examined. These early life stages lack the algal symbionts found in adult colonies of the species, thus removing one level of complexity. The larvae and polyps of these two species produced high concentrations of the diterpenoid secondary metabolites, one of which proved to significantly deter fish-feeding in in situ feeding assays. Additionally, a novel cembrenoid diterpene was isolated from P. …

Ecocritical And Metaphorical Analysis Of "Cereus Blooms At Night", Rhonda A. Kaleel Jan 2005

Ecocritical And Metaphorical Analysis Of "Cereus Blooms At Night", Rhonda A. Kaleel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Nature is an important symbol in Cereus Blooms at Night by Shani Mootoo. The metaphorical comparisons are interlaced within the colonial usurpation which fuels the novel into becoming an ecocritical statement, because without the health of the environment, both human and non-human species alike decay and die because of colonial encroachment. Shani Mootoo illustrates the ecological clash between the wetlands and the tropics through an intricate narrative involving people who are dominated by their environments and cultures, or lack thereof, which create great chasms to overcome. Through critical nature symbols such as the town of Paradise versus the wetlands, the …

Does Children's Attachment Style Influence Children's Perception Of The Parent?, Diane R. Kabbas Jan 2005

Does Children's Attachment Style Influence Children's Perception Of The Parent?, Diane R. Kabbas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis examined the possibility of meaningful associations between children's attachment styles in middle childhood and children's perceptions of the parent. Participants were 199 students (94 males, 105 females) in grades three through eight (mean age = 11.03 years) from a Florida university school. The children were administered self-report measures and peer-report nomination measures. Five attachment coping strategies (preoccupied, indecisive, avoidant, coercive, and caregiving) and four aspects of perceived maternal behavior (reliable support, overprotection, harassment, and fear induction) were assessed and numerous and meaningful associations were found. For example, perceived maternal overprotection was positively associated with preoccupied coping. Significant associations …

Discerning Protein Similarities And Folding Dynamics Through Methods In Statistical Physics And Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Mihaela E. Sardiu Jan 2005

Discerning Protein Similarities And Folding Dynamics Through Methods In Statistical Physics And Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Mihaela E. Sardiu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

One of the most important tasks in biophysics is to understand proteins. It has long been observed that sequence similarity, structural similarity, and functional similarity among proteins are highly correlated. Inspired by this observation, sequence comparison is often employed to retrieve similar/related protein sequences. However, the central issue of assigning statistical significance to the proteins retrieved remains a challenging problem. How a directed polymer/percolation model can shed light in understanding the statistics of global sequence alignments, which is also the fundamental building block for multiple sequence alignment in many multiple alignment applications, is revealed in my thesis. In terms of …

Effect Of Child Temperament In Parent-Child Interactions In A Teaching Task, Jodi Mckay Jan 2005

Effect Of Child Temperament In Parent-Child Interactions In A Teaching Task, Jodi Mckay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between specific measures of child temperament and parent-child interaction in a problem-solving task. One prediction is that children's behavior in a problem solving task will be dictated by their unique temperamental characteristics. It is also thought that child temperament will be related to parental sensitivity to child's emotional cues and understanding as well as teaching strategies and joint decision making. Another prediction is that temperament affects joint attention between children and their parents. Previous research using aggregated dimensions of temperament have found a relation between child temperament and parent-child interaction, …

Energy Cost Evaluation Of A Secure 802.11 Wireless Transmission Using Ns-2, Joao Marcelo Galindo Martins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Mobile devices capable of transmitting and receiving data over an 802.11 network have become very common gadgets in our society. Most small mobile devices available in the market today come with integrated 802.11 radio. The extraordinary growth of this technology has also introduced several worries regarding the vulnerabilities that exist by transmitting data over the air. In order to minimize such problems, encryption algorithms were added as an option to be used with 802.11. Unfortunately, the usage of encryption algorithms also causes a faster depletion of the energy resources available to a mobile device. Depending on the encryption algorithm implementation, …

Enumeration Of Lattice Paths Using Finite Operator Calculus, Katherine L B Humphreys Jan 2005

Enumeration Of Lattice Paths Using Finite Operator Calculus, Katherine L B Humphreys

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation discusses umbral calculus and lattice path enumeration and then continues by explicitly enumerating weighted directed lattice paths staying above a boundary using finite operator calculus. In Part I we discuss the history and representative results of the two topics. We separate umbral calculus into two fields, classical umbral calculus and finite operator calculus, and attempt to correct their intertwined histories. We discuss the beginnings of lattice path enumeration and survey the types of lattice path enumeration problems and solution methods found in the literature. In Part II, we give necessary conditions of a step set or of its …

Objectives for each workshop focused on one learning-style method, thereby exposing participants to content about learning styles while using learning-style strategies to deliver the material. The average participant was a Caucasian female between the ages of 40-49 years old who taught …

Entrepreneurial Scanning Behavior In New Childcare Ventures, John. Leaptrott Jan 2005

Entrepreneurial Scanning Behavior In New Childcare Ventures, John. Leaptrott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation assessed two aspects of entrepreneurial scanning related to new ventures. The first was the information search and analysis these entrepreneurs performed when they made certain basic decisions necessary to start most business prior to commencement of operations. The second was the ongoing information search activities of entrepreneurs who had started childcare businesses and were managing them in their first few years of operation. In addition, this dissertation assessed the extent these scanning activities were consistent with a dual process theory of reasoning. Finally, the limitations of the study and suggested future research directions for research of entrepreneurial scanning …

Examination Of The R-Process In Accretion-Induced Collapse (Aic), Daryl C. Davis Jan 2005

Examination Of The R-Process In Accretion-Induced Collapse (Aic), Daryl C. Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This work is a simulation of the Accretion-Induced Collapse of a 1.37 solar mass white dwarf into a neutron star and the subsequent generation of a neutrino-driven wind, with an examination as to whether the event is a candidate for r-process nucleosynthesis. The simulation utilizes a new radiation hydrodynamic code, RadHyd, to model the AIC event. We examine the process of Accretion-Induced Collapse utilizing two sets of neutrino-scattering and absorption rates: The first, and simpler of the two has been in use since they were first introduced in 1985. The second includes a more accurate implementation of neutrino-nucleon scattering and …

Experimental Study Of The Wake-Modes For Propulsion Of Two-Dimensional Heaving Airfoils, Alan Joe Buzard Jan 2005

Experimental Study Of The Wake-Modes For Propulsion Of Two-Dimensional Heaving Airfoils, Alan Joe Buzard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Particle image velocimetry and flow visualization are used to characterize the wake of a heaving airfoil in a set of two experiments. In the first experiment a tandem airfoil configuration is used, with a stationary airfoil downstream of a heaving airfoil (modified Schmidt wave-propeller). Several vortex structures are identified for a forced Strouhal number (St)---based on airfoil chord-length, forcing frequency, and free-steam velocity---for 0.1 < St < 0.7. An asymmetric average velocity profile is measured in the upper St range. In the second experiment, the wake behind a single heaving airfoil is further inspected, with the purpose of highlighting the asymmetric wake, for 0.1 < St < 1.0. A maximum wake excursion of 18 degrees is measured at St = 0.6, and a minimum excursion of 5.7 degrees occurs at St = 0.9. Using averaged velocity profiles, a virtual origin of the wake excursion is also calculated.

Evolutionary Psychological Approach To The Study Of Sibling Influences, Richard L. Michalski Jan 2005

Evolutionary Psychological Approach To The Study Of Sibling Influences, Richard L. Michalski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Research in the psychological sciences has long focused on the impact families have on later development. One feature of families is the birth order in which children from one family develop. Birth order serves as a proxy for developmentally relevant criteria including differences in age, size, and status between siblings. Following from theories derived from evolutionary psychology, differences in perceived favoritism, personality dimensions, and sexual strategy are examined. As an initial examination of the influences siblings can have beyond childhood, responses to the upset over the infidelities of in-laws are examined. Results from this series of studies suggests (1) birth …

Estimation Of The Scattering Function Of Fading Channels For Acoustic Communications In Shallow Waters, Vincent. Allemand Jan 2005

Estimation Of The Scattering Function Of Fading Channels For Acoustic Communications In Shallow Waters, Vincent. Allemand

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The measurement of the Scattering function of time-variant fading channels is of strong interest in the field of underwater acoustic communications, as it indicates the limitations of the channel capacity. It also helps reducing the development time of acoustic communication systems and the need for on-site tests using so-called "fading simulators". The Scattering function is interpreted as the expected power received at a given time-delay and frequency shift for a given signal transmitted through the acoustic channel. It has been estimated using a fourth-moment method developed by Kailath from 18 to 30 kHz, 8-ms broad-band chirps and 20--28 kHz, 28-ms …

Fashion And Power: The Representation Of Gender In Store Window Displays, Kami T. Barrett Jan 2005

Fashion And Power: The Representation Of Gender In Store Window Displays, Kami T. Barrett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Fashion and dress have a complex relationship to identity. The clothes we choose to wear can express our identities in terms of gender, race, class, and/or sexuality, among other things. This study examines how gender, race, and class are used to interpellate primarily female shoppers through store window advertising in the city of London, England. Using a feminist cultural and media studies approach, I analyze eight store window display advertisements as texts, and how their portrayals of women are presented to consumers. This study concludes that stereotypical, degrading, humiliating and violating representations of women and femininity abound in store window …

Four Hostile Newspapers: The Role Of Bal Gangadhar Tilak And Arthur Griffith In Constructing A National Identity In India And Ireland, Susan A. Rosenkranz Jan 2005

Four Hostile Newspapers: The Role Of Bal Gangadhar Tilak And Arthur Griffith In Constructing A National Identity In India And Ireland, Susan A. Rosenkranz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Although historians have begun to explore the impact of Irish nationalism on India's nationalists in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, few studies have examined the link between Irish and Indian journalism in that same era. While the Indian National Congress and the Irish Parliamentary Party pursued constitutional means to achieve Home Rule, their elitist composition ensured that neither enjoyed broad appeal. Thus, the emergence of a viable native press played a critical role in the forging of a national identity. In the vanguard of the movement were editors Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Arthur Griffith, whose newspapers provided a …

Gopher Tortoise Habitat Use And Spatial Distribution In A Southeastern Florida Population, E. H. King Jan 2005

Gopher Tortoise Habitat Use And Spatial Distribution In A Southeastern Florida Population, E. H. King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Gopher tortoise ecology is poorly understood in the rapidly developing, urbanized southeastern end of its range. This study reports on a population at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. Burrow surveys were conducted from May to July 2003 and May to August 2004. Burrows were marked and mapped as was vegetative cover. Burrow locations were tested against vegetative cover height and soil types. Burrow locations did not differ among soil types. The densest concentrations of burrows were located in areas of low, patchy vegetative cover. This is consistent with known gopher tortoise habitat preferences elsewhere in their range. Gopher …

Hot Pink, Lee E. Pifer Jan 2005

Hot Pink, Lee E. Pifer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The poems of this thesis take the reader to primal places of the mind, body, and soul, often considered better left unspoken or unseen. These places are no doubt dark and full of strange dreams. Here, relationships have a lack of resolution and, of course, are engineered by pleasure and pain. Pain is fire, ice, or reflection. Pleasure is also pain. It is all an eternal dance. Pain gives pleasure meaning and vice versa, like violence and passion. There is a pleasure in the heat rising from a red bottom, and a beauty in that image. I challenge social customs …

Guided Interpretations And The Importance Of Signs: Text, Reader, And Author In Carlos Fuentes And Jorge Luis Borges, Giada Biasetti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The purpose of the following thesis is to apply Umberto Eco's concepts included in his essay Intentio Lectoris, the Peircean notions of the relationship between the object, the sign, and the interpretant, and other essays that deal with the relationship between the reader, the text, and the author to two Latin American works of literature: one Mexican, Carlos Fuentes's "Chac Mool" and one Argentinean, Jorge Luis Borges's "Las ruinas circulares." The objective is to discuss the structural devices that guide the reader through particular interpretations, analyze the sociohistorical agents that influence the author as well as the reader, and pinpoint …

Human Mate Poaching: How Frequent Is It And What Motivates It?, Alastair P C Davies Jan 2005

Human Mate Poaching: How Frequent Is It And What Motivates It?, Alastair P C Davies

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Mate poaching occurs when an individual has sexual relations with the romantic partner of another. In Study A, I investigated the prevalence of mate poaching by presenting participants with questions whose devising was informed by a stricter definition of mate poaching than that employed by earlier studies. As expected, relative to participants in earlier studies, the current participants reported fewer experiences of mate poaching. In Study B, I investigated the likelihood that the benefits and costs of mate poaching will, respectively, motivate participants to poach or will deter them from doing so. Results indicated that for males and females to …

The PME group completed a 12-week, twice a week, 60-minute per session Pilates-based exercise …

Influence Of Eliot's Modernism In Two Early Novels And Autobiographies Of Doris Lessing, M. Catherine Burns Jan 2005

Influence Of Eliot's Modernism In Two Early Novels And Autobiographies Of Doris Lessing, M. Catherine Burns

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

There is deep personal and artistic empathy for T. S. Eliot's modernist poetry in Doris Lessing's early novels and two later autobiographies. As Eliot did, Lessing uses the modernist doctrine of difficulty to portray the education and development of the writer-artist as a long, problematic process, involving prodigious, rigorous, energetic reading efforts, and self-conscious reflexive writing. Lessing also frequently quotes other authors, and she thoroughly uses subverted allusive schemes and extrusive structural complications to render realism in her narratives more vividly. Her mature aesthetic sets at a distance a sense of personal displacement, exile, and uncertain cultural identity and echoes …

Intrusion Detection In Wireless Networks: A Data Mining Approach, Shyam Varan Nath Jan 2005

Intrusion Detection In Wireless Networks: A Data Mining Approach, Shyam Varan Nath

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The security of wireless networks has gained considerable importance due to the rapid proliferation of wireless communications. While computer network heuristics and rules are being used to control and monitor the security of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), mining and learning behaviors of network users can provide a deeper level of security analysis. The objective and contribution of this thesis is three fold: exploring the security vulnerabilities of the IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless networks; extracting features or metrics, from a security point of view, for modeling network traffic in a WLAN; and proposing a data mining-based approach to intrusion …

Investigation Of The Influence Of Surface Roughness On Reflection Coefficients Measured By A Chirp Sonar Using A Laser Profiling Of The Seafloor, Nicolas. Hache Jan 2005

Investigation Of The Influence Of Surface Roughness On Reflection Coefficients Measured By A Chirp Sonar Using A Laser Profiling Of The Seafloor, Nicolas. Hache

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This research investigates the validity of an acoustic propagation model by comparing theoretical reflection coefficients, function of frequency, to FAU chirp sonar measurements (chirp sub-bottom profiler). An acoustic model has been implemented to estimate the spectrum of energy reflected from sandy sediments in the presence of surface scattering. The surface roughness being the dominant reverberation part, the volume scattering has been neglected in this model. A laser scanning system involving an image-processing algorithm has been designed to measure the seafloor bottom roughness using 1D Fourier transforms. In the case of anisotropic roughness, an estimation of the sand ripples dominant direction …
