The Formation Of Pore Ice In Coarse Grained Soils, Walter Fourie
The Formation Of Pore Ice In Coarse Grained Soils, Walter Fourie
Engineering
Understanding the formation of pore ice in coarse grained soils is important to geotechnical and geo-environmental projects such as the construction of roads, airstrips and gravel foundations as well as the treatment of contaminated soils in the arctic, sub-arctic, alpine and northern regions. The amount of pore ice present controls the strength characteristics of the soils as well as the flow of fluid through the soil. Tests have been conducted to qualify the impact of gradation, temperature, compaction and initial moisture content on the formation of pore ice in coarse grained soils. The purpose of this study was to prepare …
Automated Processing System For Tidal Analysis Of Mf Radar Winds, Sreenivas Vemula
Automated Processing System For Tidal Analysis Of Mf Radar Winds, Sreenivas Vemula
Engineering
The medium frequency (MF) radar at Platteville, Colorado (40.18° N, 104.7° W) is used to estimate the zonal and meridional wind motions in the middle atmosphere. This radar has been in operation since January 2000. We currently have four years of wind estimates sampled every five minutes. An automated processing system has been developed in IDL to process these estimates and obtain the monthly mean winds and tidal parameters. The automated processing currently processes the wind estimates in time domain analysis using a least square fitting technique. The criteria for determining when the estimated tidal parameters are valid have been …
Pretreatment Of Aqueous Phase Of Mine Plant Tailings For Submarine Disposal, Abhishek Choudhury
Pretreatment Of Aqueous Phase Of Mine Plant Tailings For Submarine Disposal, Abhishek Choudhury
Engineering
Submarine disposal of mine tailings is a relatively recent technology that holds the promise of solving the recurring problems that the mining industry has had with tailings disposal. The system has been successfully implemented in many mines around the world. Before implementation, however, a decision needs to be made whether the biogeochemical characteristics of the area selected for submarine disposal and characteristics of the tailings are conducive to implement submarine disposal of tailings. While an expert system can decide the feasibility of submarine tailings disposal (STD) based on its database of information and decision loops for the critical factors, tailings …

Exploration And Estimation Of Gravel Resource Potential In Southeast Chukchi Sea Continental Shelf Off Kivalina, Alaska, Abhijith T. D'Souza
Engineering
Frequent storm surges in the Alaskan arctic result in washovers and high erosion of barrier islands. The village council of Kivalina has resolved to relocate from its present location on a barrier island in Northwest arctic Alaska to an adjacent onshore site. The relocation plan envisages excavation of upper 4 meter of the 25 km² onshore permafrost ground and construction of a foundation pad. The objective of this research is to estimate the gravel resource potential in the continental shelf off Kivalina. In this context seismic surveys and sediment sampling were conducted. The seismic surveys were of limited use as …

A Psychological Literary Critique From A Jungian Perspective Of E. M. Forster's A Passage To India., David W. Elliott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper is a psychological reading of E. M. Forster's A Pasage to India. It uses the psychological theories of C. G. Jung and the methodological postulates of Jungian literary critic, Terence Dawson, to examine the psychological implications of the text, especially in relation to the novel's characters. Attention is given to biographical material related to Forster, particularly his homosexuality, that is important for understanding the psychological implications of the text as well as Forster's art. The paper concludes that the Marabar Caves is the the central psychological symbol of the narrative, representing what Jung calls the collective unconscious. Both …
Monitoring Pc Hardware Sounds In Linux Systems Using The Daubechies D4 Wavelet., Robert Karns Henry
Monitoring Pc Hardware Sounds In Linux Systems Using The Daubechies D4 Wavelet., Robert Karns Henry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Users of high availability (HA) computing require systems that run continuously, with little or no downtime. Modern PCs address HA needs by monitoring operating system parameters such as voltage, temperature, and hard drive status in order to anticipate possible system failure. However, one modality for PC monitoring that has been underutilized is sound. The application described here uses wavelet theory to analyze sounds produced by PC hard drives during standard operation. When twenty-nine hard drives were tested with the application and the results compared with the drives' Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) data, the binomial distribution's low p-value of …

Identifying Common Ultrasonic Predictive Failure Signatures In Bearing Elements For The Development Of An Automated Condition Based Ultrasonic Monitoring Controller., Jason Eric Johnson
Identifying Common Ultrasonic Predictive Failure Signatures In Bearing Elements For The Development Of An Automated Condition Based Ultrasonic Monitoring Controller., Jason Eric Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a new method for Condition Based Ultrasonic Monitoring to be applied in conjunction with a lubrication distribution controller. As part of this thesis, algorithms were developed using ultrasonic sensors to control the application of lubrication to machinery. The controller sensors detect an ultrasonic signal from rolling or sliding machine elements. This signal then alerts the controller to dispense the proper amount of lubrication when needed, as opposed to a time schedule based on average performance or history. The work from this thesis will be used to help reduce equipment downtime and maintenance cost when utilized in an …

Ranging Patterns And Habitat Utilization Of Northern River Otters, Lontra Canadensis, In Missouri: Implications For The Conservation Of A Reintroduced Species, Deborah Dorothy Boege-Tobin
Dissertations
I studied the spacing patterns and habitat utilization by reintroduced northern river otters, Lontra canadensis, at two sites in Missouri because previous studies of otters indicate, plasticity of a species social structure will likely be due to the tactics employed in acquiring resources in any given area. Seven hypotheses were tested by employing radio-tracking, habitat assessment and geographic information system approaches: (1) home range (HR) and core area (CA) size differ by sex; (2) HR and CA size differ in breeding vs. non-breeding seasons; (3) percent range overlap differs by sex; (4) habitat utilization, as indicated by latrine use, …

We report the result from a search for charged-current coherent pion production induced by muon neutrinos with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV. The data are collected with a fully active scintillator detector in the K2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. No evidence for coherent pion production is observed, and an upper limit of 0.60×10-2 is set on the cross section ratio of coherent pion production to the total charged-current interaction at 90% confidence level. This is the first experimental limit for coherent charged pion production in the energy region of a few GeV. © 2005 The American Physical Society.
Preliminary Investigation Into The Use Of A Dehumidifying For Drying Wild Herbal Teas In Southeast Alaska, Daniel Joseph Slakey
Preliminary Investigation Into The Use Of A Dehumidifying For Drying Wild Herbal Teas In Southeast Alaska, Daniel Joseph Slakey
Senior Theses
This project investigates the use of a dehumidifying dry kiln (traditionally used for drying lumber) for drying wild herbal teas in Southeast Alaska. Its major considerations are kiln design, moisture content data (for use in drying schedules), and preliminary drying schedules. Project conclusions result from literature review and experimentation. Regarding kiln design for uniformity and efficiency, the researcher found the following principles of utmost importance: 1) proper direction of airflow (achieved by incorporating measures that will direct the airflow, such as baffling and air deflectors); 2) maximizing space by fitting the maximum number of drying racks into the kiln and …
Personal And Professional Attributes Of Community And Traditional Police Officers Impacting Order Maintenance And Exercised Degrees Of Control: Phenomenology, Rickey L. Mitchell
Personal And Professional Attributes Of Community And Traditional Police Officers Impacting Order Maintenance And Exercised Degrees Of Control: Phenomenology, Rickey L. Mitchell
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Community policing differs from traditional police work. It is a response to public and social pressures on policing to fill needed roles of prevention, as opposed to crime fighting. Literature stresses that community policing efforts incorporate the attitudes and perceptions of law enforcement officers, suggesting that certain learned and naturally-occurring personality traits among officers predispose success or failure in community policing efforts. To further the exploration of community policing, there is a need to qualify the personal and professional attributes of police officers and their impact on order maintenance and exercised degrees of control.
A qualitative, phenomenology study conducted on …
The Fight To Save America's Inbox: State Legislation And Litigation In The Wake Of Can-Spam, Emma Scanlan
The Fight To Save America's Inbox: State Legislation And Litigation In The Wake Of Can-Spam, Emma Scanlan
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
The fight to curb the ever-increasing amount of unsolicited commercial email or “spam” showing up in the inboxes of American businesses has generated both state and federal legislation. The CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 was enacted to create a bright-line between spam and legal commercial email. The Act preempted many state spam laws but also left significant enforcement abilities to the individual states. States that elect to create large civil damages for spam without criminalizing the transmission of unsolicited commercial email run the risk of winning cases where the damage awards are largely unenforceable and not effective deterrents to big-time spammers. …

American And French Perspectives On Trademark Keying: The Courts Leave Businesses Searching For Answers, Terrance J. Keenan
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
Trademark owners in America and Europe are attacking the lucrative practice of selling search results and advertising linked to searches based on product names and trademarks, which is known as trademark keying. From makers of luxury products to travel companies, and insurance companies to home décor vendors, companies have sued Internet search providers to stop this practice that they believe amounts to trademark infringement. Recent cases against search engine companies in American and French courts reflect divergent views on the legality of the practice at this early stage of the debate. This Article evaluates recent rulings in both jurisdictions which …
