From Self-Sufficiency To Personal And Family Sustainability: A New Paradigm For Social Policy, Robert Leibson Hawkins Dec 2005

From Self-Sufficiency To Personal And Family Sustainability: A New Paradigm For Social Policy, Robert Leibson Hawkins

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Current social policy that affects welfare recipients focuses on the concept of "self-sufficiency" where leaving welfare for work is the goal. While this approach has reduced welfare rolls, it has not necessarily helped low-income people improve their economic, educational, or social outlook. This paper suggests that the concept of Personal and Family Sustainability (PFS) may be a better way to evaluate and direct social policy. A definition of PFS is developed from the environmental and community development roots of sustainability and four domains for creating PFS indicators are introduced.

Proposal For Implementation Of A Nursing Theory Into Nursing Care Delivery, Margaret A. Gadaire

Theses and Dissertations

Jean Watson, in the introduction to her book, Nursing: Human Science and Human Care: A Theory of Nursing, states that “A Theory is an imaginative grouping of knowledge, ideas and experience that are represented symbolically and seek to illuminate a given phenomenon. ” (1999, pg.l) The phenomenon in this proposal is nursing care delivery. The symbol of nursing is caring. The question; How does a hospital implement a patient care delivery system that will demonstrate the caring provided by its nurses? This proposal provides a mid-sized urban hospital with a method for implementing a nursing theory into its patient care …

Fungal Detection And Identification By Nuclear Acid-Based Assays, Cherita La'chelle Thomas Dec 2005

Fungal Detection And Identification By Nuclear Acid-Based Assays, Cherita La'chelle Thomas

Theses (Pre-2016)

Microorganisms have been reported in closed environments at different NASA facilities, from past NASA missions, and in the Russian Space Station MIR. Microorganisms were the first inhabitants of the International Space Station (ISS). They can impact human health and plant health, and cause damage to construction materials in space as well as on Earth. Information on microorganisms and their impact on environmental safety during Human Exploration Missions is important, especially for missions of longer duration. The main objective of this project was to develop an easy to use, rapid, sensitive and accurate model for the identification of relevant fungal species …

Attitudes And Practices Of Virginia Efnep And Fsne Educators Toward Teaching About Childhood Overweight, Elena Serrano, Ruby Cox Dec 2005

Attitudes And Practices Of Virginia Efnep And Fsne Educators Toward Teaching About Childhood Overweight, Elena Serrano, Ruby Cox

Journal of Extension

The main objective of the study reported here was to assess the attitudes, practices, and needs of Virginia EFNEP and FSNE educators toward addressing childhood overweight. Written questionnaires were administered to 40 educators. Nearly 80% considered childhood overweight a "growing problem"; however, only 12 indicated they had taught classes on childhood overweight and nearly one-third were considered in pre-contemplation or contemplation (based on Stages of Change). The biggest perceived barrier was lack of resources and information, followed by lack of interest of class participants. The findings demonstrate the need for curricula and a stage-based training on childhood overweight for Extension.

Justice Education As A Schoolwide Effort: Effective Religious Education In The Catholic School, Michael P. Horan

Journal of Catholic Education

This essay describes and analyzes one successful justice education program flowing from community service, and demonstrates how such a program in Catholic school responds to several important “calls” to Catholic educators. These “calls” are issued by (a) the needs of the learners and the signs of the times, (b) official documents of the Church about the mission of the Catholic school and the faith growth of youth, and (c) a creative reading of history and contemporary expression of religious education that involves cooperation among all teachers and all subject areas in the school. The essay begins with a description of …

Sponge Community Structure And Anti-Predator Defenses On Temperate Reefs Of The South Atlantic Bight, Richard Robert Ruzicka Dec 2005

Sponge Community Structure And Anti-Predator Defenses On Temperate Reefs Of The South Atlantic Bight, Richard Robert Ruzicka

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The interaction between predation and anti-predator defenses of prey is important in shaping community structure in all ecosystems. This study examined the relationship between sponge predation and the distribution of sponge anti-predator defenses on temperate reefs in the South Atlantic Bight. Significant differences in the distribution of sponge species, sponge densities, and densities of sponge predators were documented across two adjacent reef habitats. Significant differences also occurred in the distribution of sponge chemical and structural defenses with chemical deterrence significantly greater in sponges associated with the habitat having higher predation intensity. Structural defenses, although effective in some instances, appear to …

Adolescents living in the City of San Bernardino, California, are susceptible to health risks due to high rates of violence, suicide, teen pregnancy, and poverty, which place them among the most vulnerable in the Nation to disability, early death, unhealthy offspring, illiteracy, economic disadvantage, and chronic disease. This study analyzed data from the Youth Risk Behavior (YRBS) and local surveys conducted in the City’s Unified School District from 1999 through 2001. The investigators focused on the relationship, if any, of dietary and anthropometric factors to the priority adolescent behaviors targeted for intervention by the Healthy People 2010 objectives: accidental injuries …

A Model Leadership Curriculum For Managers Of An Eden Alternative Nursing Home, Jennifer A. Horton Dec 2005

A Model Leadership Curriculum For Managers Of An Eden Alternative Nursing Home, Jennifer A. Horton

Master's Theses and Capstones

A nursing home is a difficult environment for staff as well as residents. As a result, some nursing homes are moving toward a more holistic, person-centered approach to care. The Eden Alternative is one of those organizations. Empowerment of direct caregivers and the flattening of the hierarchical structure of the traditional nursing home are two important components of the culture change process known as the Eden Alternative. As a result, management within an Eden environment requires skills different from those in the traditional top-down organizational structure. A model curriculum is outlined to help managers of an Eden Alternative nursing home …

Vital Pulp Therapy With Mineral Trioxide Aggregate: An Outcomes Study, Heather H. Lauer Dec 2005

Vital Pulp Therapy With Mineral Trioxide Aggregate: An Outcomes Study, Heather H. Lauer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is used in a variety of endodontic procedures. MTA is proven to provide good marginal adaption to dentin, to be biocompatible, and to stimulate dentin bridge formation through animal studies. These properties make MTA a potentially useful material to be used in vital pulp therapy. Clinical data on the use of MTA as a vital pulp medicament is sparse. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome of vital pulp therapy using MTA as the pulp medicament. Inclusion criteria for patient selection for recall was based on pulp treatment necessary from carious pulp …

Faculty Scholarship

The structural allostery and binding interface for the human serum transferrin (Tf)-transferrin receptor (TfR) complex were identified using radiolytic footprinting and mass spectrometry. We have determined previously that the transferrin C-lobe binds to the receptor helical domain. In this study we examined the binding interactions of full-length transferrin with receptor and compared these data with a model of the complex derived from cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM) reconstructions (Cheng, Y., Zak, O., Aisen, P., Harrison, S. C. & Walz, T. (2004) Structure of the human transferrin receptor-transferrin complex. Cell 116, 565-576). The footprinting results provide the following novel conclusions. First, we report …

United States Food Law Update, Michael Tingey Roberts

Journal of Food Law & Policy

This update summarizes significant changes and developments in food law over the first half of 2005. Not every change in national food law for the first half of 2005 is included; instead, this update is limited to significant changes in national law. New developments in state law, while certainly important and deserving of attention, are beyond the scope of this update. These updates provide a starting point for scholars, practitioners, food scientists, and policymakers determined to understand the shaping of food law in modem society. Tracing the development of food law through these updates also builds an important historical context …

The Food Safety And Inspection Service's Lack Of Statutory Authority To Suspend Inspection For Failure To Comply With Haccp Regulations, Dennis R. Johnson, Jolyda O. Swaim

Journal of Food Law & Policy

Since the implementation of the Mega-Reg, the agency has had mixed success with its new enforcement procedures. Although most establishments have chosen to work with FSIS to modify their procedures to allay any concerns the agency had, on a few occasions, no compromise was reached. In these cases, the establishment filed suit in federal district court challenging the agency's authority to remove inspectors for failure to comply with the Mega-Reg. In the three cases where the agency's authority was challenged, the establishment was successful and inspection was restored.
