Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Selenium (Se) is deficient in many Arkansas soils; therefore, an experiment was conducted on steers to evaluate the effects of two supplemental Se sources on performance, blood metabolites, and immune function. Thirty Angus-crossbred steers were blocked by weight and assigned within block to one of 15 pens (two steers/pen). Pens were assigned randomly within blocks to one of three dietary treatments consisting of a corn-soybean meal supplement devoid of supplemental Se (negative control, NC) or corn-soybean meal supplements providing 1.7 mg supplemental Se/d as sodium selenite (inorganic Se, ISe) or as Se yeast (organic Se, OSe). Steers were offered fescue …

An outbreak of Paederus sabaeus rove beetles in Kenya during the 1997-1998 El Niño resulted in a dramatic increase of vesicular dermatitis in its capital Nairobi. The beetle, popularly called ‘Nairobi Fly’, contains a potent toxic fluid that causes epidermolysis and acute conjunctivitis. A cross-sectional epidemiological study involving 1,208 Nairobi residents was conducted to determine the health impact of this outbreak. The results showed that one-third of the Nairobi population were infected during this period. The majority of the respondents reported lesions on exposed body parts above the shoulders. Disfiguring, painful blisters and skin rashes in and around the facial …

Market-Orientation And The Multi-Factor Productivity Of Cherokee Indian Farmers Before Removal, Matthew T. Gregg Jan 2005

Market-Orientation And The Multi-Factor Productivity Of Cherokee Indian Farmers Before Removal, Matthew T. Gregg

Business Faculty Publications

The efficiency of Cherokee Indian agriculture before removal has been debated since the early nineteenth century, yet no study has employed quantitative methods to estimate the multifactor productivity of these farmers. For this investigation I employed a unique census collected in 1835 to estimate Cherokee household-level technical efficiency and scale elasticities to determine which group (classified in terms of economic and racial characteristics) within this diverse Nation achieved the highest farm productivity. The analysis reveals that among non-slaveholding Cherokee!r--the majority of Cherokee households in the Southeast--market-oriented units that were unrelated to any particular household racial composition achieved the highest …

A Descriptive Study Of Beta2-Agonist Use In Asthma Patients Based On A Nationally Representative Sample, James Melfi

Open Access Dissertations

Study. Prescribing patterns found in asthma patients compared to those patterns delineated in non-asthma patients. Background. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by inflammation as well as airway constriction. NIH guidelines recommend treatment of moderate to severe asthma with both preventive anti-inflammatory medication (inhaled corticosteroids) as well as a bronchodilator (beta 2 agonist) for quick relief of episodic symptoms (i.e., rescue medication). However, inhaled beta2-agonists are recommended for use in all types and classifications of asthma to provide prompt relief of airflow obstruction. The purpose of this study is to describe the pattern of prescribing inhaled …

Arrival Timing And Seasonal Reproductive Performance In A Long-Distance Migratory Landbird, Robert J. Smith, Frank R. Moore Jan 2005

Arrival Timing And Seasonal Reproductive Performance In A Long-Distance Migratory Landbird, Robert J. Smith, Frank R. Moore

Faculty Publications

The date when a landbird migrant arrives on its breeding grounds may have reproductive consequences. Generally, early arriving individuals begin breeding earlier and consequently experience greater seasonal reproductive performance. Here, we describe relationships between arrival timing and seasonal reproductive performance in the American redstart (Setophaga ruticilla), a long-distance passerine migrant, arriving at northerly breeding grounds in Michigan’s eastern Upper Peninsula. Evidence suggests that both males and females benefited from early arrival at the breeding grounds. Early males appeared to settle on higher quality territories and hatched nestlings sooner than later arrivals. Early females began their clutches early, produced …

The Use Of Prebiotics To Improve Fish Health, Michelle Stone

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The aim of this project was to analyse critically the potential use of prebiotics in aquaculture. Initially, the intestinal microflora of rainbow trout, raised in the aquarium facilities at CEFAS, Weymouth, was investigated using both conventional bacteriological (culture, BiOLOG) and molecular (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP), 16S rRNA gene sequencing) techniques. Dominant colony types were identified as Aeromonas sobria, Carnobacterium piscicola and Clostridium gasigenes. A series of in vitro growth curve studies was carried out using a selection of intestinal bacteria and known fish pathogens, to determine the ability of intestinal bacteria to utilise the potential prebiotic candidates inulin, lactulose …

Review Of The Literature On The Effects Of Strength Training On The Health Status Of Senior Citizens, Lou Ann Wikan Jan 2005

Review Of The Literature On The Effects Of Strength Training On The Health Status Of Senior Citizens, Lou Ann Wikan

Graduate Research Papers

Literature has shown that aerobic exercise can improve a senior citizen's health status and the associated quality of life. As of late, the question of whether strength training is also an important component of improvement in elderly living has surfaced. According to Dinsmoor, (1993 ), aerobic exercise improves cardiovascular fitness and boosts the body's ability to burn oxygen, but has little effect on strength and muscle mass. While aerobic exercise is associated with the improvement of cardiovascular fitness, the question remains as to whether additional benefits could be acquired through strength training. Thus, a review of literature was completed due …

Liquid Feeding In The Red Imported Fire Ant, Solenopsis Invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), Kathryn Shea O'Brien

LSU Master's Theses

In order to accurately test liquid bait effectiveness in the lab, we determined that a starvation time of 96h is more appropriate than 72h of starvation time for laboratory fire ants (Solenopsis invicta Buren) to better simulate foraging ants in the field. Densities and viscosities of two commercial baits and 20% sugar water at 25C were measured then compared to amount of material consumed per ant at these physical properties. Mean densities of 20% sugar water, Dr. Moss, and Terro were 1.051, 1.287, and 1.354 g/mL, respectively, and viscosity of each bait treatment varied in the same order but more …

Identification Of 'Structural Alerts' And Associated Mechanisms Of Action Of Mammary Gland Carcinogens In Female Rodents, Shanna Tommika Moss Jan 2005

Identification Of 'Structural Alerts' And Associated Mechanisms Of Action Of Mammary Gland Carcinogens In Female Rodents, Shanna Tommika Moss

LSU Master's Theses

A new structure-activity relationship (SAR) approach to modeling was utilized to study mammary gland carcinogens. A set of chemicals tested for mammary tumorigenesis that have been analyzed in the Carcinogenic Potency Database (CPDB) were subjected to several computational analyses in an attempt to predict each chemical’s carcinogenic potential. A total of six learning sets (rat and mouse mammary gland carcinogen, CPDB rat and mouse, and female-specific rodent models) were developed and validated using a SAR modeling algorithm called categorical-SAR (cat-SAR). The predictive cat-SAR program evaluates active and inactive compounds of known biological activity and predicts their biological activity from this …

A Compilation Of Homologous Cancer-Related Genes In Humans And Dogs, Julie Susan Brown

Honors Program Theses

The purpose of this study was to find out if spontaneously arising point mutations occurred in canine e-kit and if these mutations contributed to the development of mast cell tumors in dogs. Specimens were collected from 11 dogs after tumors had been surgically removed or the dog had died. The e-kit DNA was amplified using PCR, and the previously established point mutations were searched for (London et al., 1999). The point mutations found in human mast cell lines were not detected in the canine e-kit DNA, but new mutations were observed. These new mutations, observed in 50% of the tumors, …

Adoption Notices To Genetic Fathers: No To Scarlet Letters, Yes To Good Faith Cooperation, Jeffrey A. Parness Jan 2005

Adoption Notices To Genetic Fathers: No To Scarlet Letters, Yes To Good Faith Cooperation, Jeffrey A. Parness

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

American courts and legislatures have struggled to define the participation rights of genetic fathers in governmental adoption schemes for infants born to unwed mothers as a result of consensual sexual intercourse. Federal constitutional privacy interests in both paternity opportunity and childrearing compel a certain level of genetic father participation. However, excessive levels of participation undermine the goals of swift, final, and inexpensive adoptions, as well as deny some maternal preferences. The difficulties in balancing genetic father participation with competing interests are well illustrated by recent developments in Florida. There, the so-called "Scarlet Letter" law of 2001 (effectively branding women as …
