Kidney Development In Eleutherodactylus Coqui With Relation To Edema Syndrome, Seung Yun Lee Jan 2005

Kidney Development In Eleutherodactylus Coqui With Relation To Edema Syndrome, Seung Yun Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vertebrates develop embryonic kidneys before the final adult kidney. Particularly for organisms with aquatic larvae such as frogs, the first embryonic kidney, the pronephros is essential for the larvae's survival. Those larvae with defective or without pronephroi exhibited pronounced edema. Edema is severe swelling of a body part as a result of fluid retention. To date, although the embryonic kidneys have been extensively studied in various model organisms, it has not been studied in Eleutherodactylus coqui. E. coqui is a direct developing frog and lacks a tadpole phase in its life cycle. I examined the kidney development in E. coqui …

Expresson Of The Endodermal Marker, Ecsox17, During Embryogenesis Of The Direct Developing Frog, Eleutherodactylus Coqui, Srikanth Singamsetty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the model amphibian, Xenopus laevis, the HMG box transcription factor, Sox17, is expressed throughout the vegetal region that forms the endoderm. It is both necessary and sufficient for the endoderm formation. In order to study endoderm formation in the direct developing frog, Eleutherodactylus coqui, its Sox17 orthologue EcSox17 was cloned by Sean Willamson. To look at the expression of EcSox17, I designed primers and did RT-PCR on whole embryos. EcSox17 was expressed from cleavage to hatching of free-living froglet. EcSox17 RNA was present in the ovaries, an expression which has not been reported in any other vertebrate. Whole mount …

The Problem Of New Uses, Rebecca S. Eisenberg Jan 2005

The Problem Of New Uses, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Articles

Discovering new uses for drugs that are already on the market seems like it ought to be the low-lying fruit of biopharmaceutical research and development (R&D). Firms have already made significant investments in developing these drugs and bringing them to market, including testing them in clinical trials, shepherding them through the FDA regulatory approval process, building production facilities, and training sales staff to market them to physicians. By this point, the drugs have begun to enjoy goodwill among patients and physicians and casual observations in the course of clinical experience may point to potential new uses. One might expect that …

Host Blood Proteins And Peptides In The Midgut Of The Tick Dermacentor Variabilis Contribute To Bacterial Control, Daniel E. Sonenshine, Wayne L. Hynes, Shane M. Ceraul, Robert Mitchell, Tiffany Benzine Jan 2005

Host Blood Proteins And Peptides In The Midgut Of The Tick Dermacentor Variabilis Contribute To Bacterial Control, Daniel E. Sonenshine, Wayne L. Hynes, Shane M. Ceraul, Robert Mitchell, Tiffany Benzine

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Antimicrobial midgut proteins and peptides that result from blood digestion in feeding American dog ticks Dermacentor variabilis (Say) were identified. Midgut extracts from these ticks showed antimicrobial activity against Micrococcus luteus, regardless of whether they were challenged with peptidoglycan, blood meal components, rabbit blood, Bacillus subtilis, Escherischia coli or Borrelia burgdorferi. However, no peptide band co-migrating with defensin was found in midgut extracts from the challenged ticks. Partial purification of the midgut extracts using C18 Sep Paks and gel electrophoresis showed the presence of 4 distinct bands with rMW 4.1, 5.3, 5.7 and 8.0 kDa identified …

Measurement Equivalence Of The Center For Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale For Latino And Anglo Adolescents: A National Study, Lisa J. Crockett, Brandy A. Randall, Yuh-Ling Shen, S T. Russell, Anne K. Driscoll

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The cross-ethnic measurement equivalence of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D; L. S. Radloff, 1977) was examined using a subsample of adolescents (N = 10,691) from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, Configural and metric invariance, as well as functional and scalar equivalence, were examined for Anglo American, Mexican American, Cuban American, and Puerto Rican American youths age 12-18 years. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) in each group provided evidence of configural invariance for European and Mexican American adolescents but not for Cuban and Puerto Rican youths. A 2-group CFA for Anglo and Mexican Americans demonstrated partial metric …

Direct Selling By Urban Farmers: Constraints In Value Creation, Albert C. Manyengawana Jan 2005

Direct Selling By Urban Farmers: Constraints In Value Creation, Albert C. Manyengawana

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

According to Heimlich (1989), one of the leading development economists who has published several articles on small and urban farming, there are two major forms of urban farms namely backyard gardens and community gardens. These may, further be classified into recreational, adaptive, and traditional farms. Urban farms emerged as a direct response to beautify the landscape, provide food security and serve as an additional income source. Over time, changes in the farming sector allowed farmers to adopt direct marketing initiatives, circumventing the intermediaries in the distribution chain. These tactics of selling directly to consumers included farmers’ markets, road-side sales, and …

Effectiveness Of Dried Distillers Grains With Solubles As A Replacement For Oilseed Meal In Supplements For Cattle Consuming Poor Quality Forage, Heidi Doering-Resch, Cody Wright, Kent Tjardes, George Perry, Kelly Bruns, Bradley Rops

South Dakota Beef Report, 2005

A two-year study was conducted at the South Dakota State University Southeast Research Farm in Beresford, SD, to determine the effects of feeding supplemental dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) on the performance of mid-gestation and non-gestating, non-lactating beef cows. Ninety-six gestating beef cows (initial BW = 1276.4 ± 22.2; initial BCS = 4.7 ± 0.09) and 96 non-gestating, non-lactating beef cows (initial BW = 1214.0 ± 20.8; initial BCS = 5.4 ± 0.10) were used for year 1 and year 2, respectively. Cows were stratified by weight and allocated to one of 15 pens. Pens were then randomly assigned …

Teen Mothers' Perceptions Of Medicalization And The Patient/Provider Relationship, Preston Martin-Lyon Jan 2005

Teen Mothers' Perceptions Of Medicalization And The Patient/Provider Relationship, Preston Martin-Lyon

Theses and Dissertations

Within the past twenty years, a great deal of research has addressed pregnancy and childbirth in the United States. Often, however, prior studies have focused on white middle-class women and have neglected the experiences of women of color and low-income women. Teen mothers have also been marginalized in past research. With few exceptions, the limited research that does exist on African American teen mothers is usually framed around the "teen pregnancy crisis" in the U.S; seldom are teens included in studies dealing with the overall issue of medicalization. In an effort to understand the extent to which the medical model …

Maternal Education And Child Nutritional Status In Bolivia: Finding The Links, Michelle Bellessa Frost, Renata Forste, David W. Haas Jan 2005

Maternal Education And Child Nutritional Status In Bolivia: Finding The Links, Michelle Bellessa Frost, Renata Forste, David W. Haas

Faculty Publications

This study models various pathways linking maternal education and child nutritional status in Bolivia, using a national sample of children. Pathways examined include socioeconomic status, health knowledge, modern attitudes towards health care, female autonomy, and reproductive behavior. The data come from the 1998 Bolivia Demographic and Health Survey. Logistic regression results suggest that socioeconomic factors are the most important pathways linking maternal education and child nutritional status, and that modern attitudes about health care also explain the impact of education. Health care knowledge accounts for less of the effect of maternal education on child nutritional status, with autonomy being the …

Pervasiveness Of Phytoliths In Prehistoric Southwestern Diet And Implications For Regional And Temporal Trends For Dental Microwear, Karl J. Reinhard, Dennis R. Danielson Jan 2005

Pervasiveness Of Phytoliths In Prehistoric Southwestern Diet And Implications For Regional And Temporal Trends For Dental Microwear, Karl J. Reinhard, Dennis R. Danielson

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Our previous analysis of phytolith content of coprolites showed that calcium oxalate phytoliths from desert food plants caused dental microwear among prehistoric Texas hunter-gatherers. We demonstrated that phytoliths from desert succulents were ubiquitous and abundant in hunter-gatherer coprolites. We found that calcium oxalate phytoliths were harder than human dental enamel. We concluded that phytoliths from desert succulent plants caused dental microwear and hypothesized that such dental microwear would be common in other desert hunter-gatherer and horticultural peoples. Presented here are further analyses of phytoliths from coprolites. Two additional hunter-gatherer sites and three Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi) horticultural sites are included in …

Narratives Of Adolescent Students: The Integration Of Health And Learning Through Application Of Nursing Theory, Marjean Huber Jan 2005

Narratives Of Adolescent Students: The Integration Of Health And Learning Through Application Of Nursing Theory, Marjean Huber

Dissertations

Problem. There are few resources to show educators how to help students improve learning by improving health and mental well-being. There is a lack of integration in the literature in terms of how practitioners can reach these students in order to help them learn effectively and develop into successful, productive adults with meaningful lives. This study has three major sections. First, I examine my experiences within education to determine what values, truths, and principles mold my practice. Second, I identify my teaching practice in relationship to nursing theory integrating it with learning theory, thus highlighting the relationship between the health …

Using Intellectual Property Rights To Preserve The Global Genetic Commons: The International Treaty On Plant Genetic Resources For Food & Agriculture, Laurence R. Helfer Jan 2005

Using Intellectual Property Rights To Preserve The Global Genetic Commons: The International Treaty On Plant Genetic Resources For Food & Agriculture, Laurence R. Helfer

Faculty Scholarship

Over the last twenty years, national governments, patent owners, farmers, plant breeders, researchers, and a diverse array of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have engaged in a vigorous debate over how to conserve and utilize the world's plant genetic diversity. On one side of this debate are advocates of a pure global commons regime, which would allow researchers, breeders, and farmers free and unfettered access to all plant genetic resources (PGRs), including those held in international seed banks, in national collections, and in situ on public lands. On the other side are advocates of a private property approach, which seeks to encourage …

The Reproductive Effectiveness Of Reindeer Bulls On Depo-Provera, Danielle Anderson Jan 2005

The Reproductive Effectiveness Of Reindeer Bulls On Depo-Provera, Danielle Anderson

Honors Capstones

Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) are a domesticated variety of caribou, commonly bred and herded by humans in some northern countries. Use of Depo-Provera (DP) is of interest to many reindeer breeders and exhibitors across North America. While on DP, bulls are more easily handled and treated as they would be throughout the rest of the year. A regimen of injectable Depo-Provera (DP) appears to be effective in controlling extremely aggressive behavior of reindeer bulls during the rut. However, it is not known whether or not this lowers their ability to breed as many cows as would have without the DP shots. …

The Snowball Effect : Externalities From State-Mandated Child Support Enforcement From Non-Custodial Parents, Marsha L. Cascio Jan 2005

The Snowball Effect : Externalities From State-Mandated Child Support Enforcement From Non-Custodial Parents, Marsha L. Cascio

Honors Capstones

Single parenting leads to several outcomes directly affected by the payment, or nonpayment, of child support. For many single mothers, receipt of child support payments is what pulls their households above or pushes them below the poverty level. Several correlations have long been made: Poor youngsters and decreased abilities in school (e.g., test scores), decreased competencies in school with less extracurricular activities, both test scores and extracurricular activities with positive productive members of society. That said, child support payments (or lack thereof) have positive and negative externalities for youngsters. Literature review, research and data collection regarding child support system legislation, …

A Novel Approach To Classify Risk In Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (Dhf) Using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (Bia), F. Ibrahim, M.N. Taib, W.A.B. Wan Abas, C.C. Guan, S. Sulaiman

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

This paper introduces a novel approach to classify the risk in dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) patients using the bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) technique. This in vivo technique involves the application of a small average constant current of less than 1 mA at a single frequency of 50 kHz through the human body, and measurement of the body's bioelectrical resistance (R), phase angle (α), body capacitance (BC) and capacitive reactance (Xc) via four surface electrodes. BIA measurements have been conducted on 184 (97 males and 87 females) serological confirmed dengue patients during their hospitalization in University Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital, Malaysia. The …

Reforming The Administrative Procedure Act: Democracy Index Rulemaking, David Fontana Jan 2005

Reforming The Administrative Procedure Act: Democracy Index Rulemaking, David Fontana

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This Essay argues that the current regime of administrative law should be changed by creating legal incentives for agencies to involve the public in the rulemaking process via "democracy index rulemaking." Democracy index rulemaking would create a clear incentive for agencies to involve the public by requiring that the more participation that occurred during the rulemaking process, the more deference that such an agency rule would receive in court. An agency could receive this deference by using normal notice and comment procedures and receiving a large number of relevant and non-repetitive comments on a proposed rule, with the precise amount …
