Impact Of Nutrition Knowledge On Food Evaluations, Stephen Crites, Shelley Aikman
Departmental Papers (Psych)
Objective: This study explored whether nutrition knowledge interacted with evaluations of a food’s healthiness to influence food attitudes (ie, global evaluations). Since attitudes guide behavior, understanding factors that impact food attitudes is one way to understand food selection and why factors such as nutrition knowledge have only a modest impact on food selection. We hypothesized that the relation between health evaluations and food attitudes would be stronger for people high in nutrition knowledge. We also explored the macronutrient composition of foods, and how it related to attitudes and health evaluations.
Design: Survey employing multilevel analyses to examine within- and between-subject …

G05-1583 How To Body Condition Score Dairy Animals, Jeffrey F. Keown
G05-1583 How To Body Condition Score Dairy Animals, Jeffrey F. Keown
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Routinely scoring the body condition of dairy animals can help detect potential problems that might cause a decrease in milk production.
As the production level of a herd increases, body condition scoring becomes more important. A routine program for body condition scoring can help detect potential health problems before they significantly reduce milk production. A herd of cattle in good body condition will produce more, and will be less susceptible to metabolic disorders, disease, mastitis and reproductive problems. Underconditioned cows are subject to health problems, and overconditioned cows are subject to calving difficulties, fatty liver syndrome and possible death.

Development Of Diazacon™ As An Avian Contraceptive, Christi Yoder, Kimberly Bynum, Lowell Miller
Development Of Diazacon™ As An Avian Contraceptive, Christi Yoder, Kimberly Bynum, Lowell Miller
Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
Due to increasing human-wildlife conflicts with birds and growing opposition to lethal techniques, nonlethal methods need to be developed to help manage bird populations. DiazaCon™ is a promising oral contraceptive that acts by directly inhibiting the conversion of desmosterol to cholesterol. Because cholesterol is essential for the production of the steroid reproductive hormones testosterone, progesterone, and estradiol, DiazaCon™ also indirectly inhibits the formation of these hormones. These hormones are essential for sperm and egg production, and the production of egg yolk precursors in the liver. Because DiazaCon™ is cleared slowly from the liver, its contraceptive effects are long-lasting. Initial research …

Effectiveness Of Milorganite® As A Repellent To Protect Ornamental And Agronomic Plants From Deer Over-Browsing, Odin Stephens, Michael Mengak, George Gallagher, David Osborn, Karl Miller
Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
When deer populations become locally overabundant, browsing of ornamental and agronomic plants negatively affects plant establishment, survival, and productivity. Milorganite® is a slow-release, organic fertilizer produced from human sewage. We tested Milorganite® as a deer repellent on chrysanthemums (Chrysanthemums morifolium) in an urban/suburban environment, and soybeans (Gycine max) in a rural agriculture environment. Six beds of chrysanthemums at two sites were monitored for 28 to 35 days. Treatment plants received a top dressing of 104 grams of Milorganite® (1120.9 kg/ha). Milorganite® treated plants had more (P < 0.001) terminal buds and achieved greater height (P < 0.002) compared to controls at one site, however damage observed was similar at the second site. In a second experiment, 0.2-ha plots of soybeans (Glycine max) were planted on five rural properties in …

Hunters----Can They Do The Job?, Paul D. Curtis, David Drake, Jody Enck, Gary San Julian, David Taylor
Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
Management of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) herds at the landscape scale is increasingly difficult. The future of eastern hardwood forests is threatened by inadequate regeneration of valuable timber species, due in large measure to deer browsing. In the northeast, deer damage to crops, landscaping, and vehicles costs more than 640 million dollars annually. Nationally, hunter ranks are decreasing. In the east , white-tailed deer numbers are increasing; state wildlife agencies have expanded season lengths, and increased deer bag limits. While venison is still a highly prized meat, the average hunting family wants to use about 2 deer per …
Conditioning Beaver To Avoid Desirable Plants, Julie Harper, Dale L. Nolte, Thomas J. Deliberto, David Bergman
Conditioning Beaver To Avoid Desirable Plants, Julie Harper, Dale L. Nolte, Thomas J. Deliberto, David Bergman
Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
Conditioned food aversion can be used to train animals to avoid select foods. Generally, aversive conditioning is best applied when animals first encounter a food item. However, almost by definition damage is inflicted to desirable plants very familiar to the culprit. We assessed the potential for training beaver to avoid a known preferred food. During a 5 day day treatment period beavers were offered only corn at 1600 hours. Six hours later, animals that had ingested corn were injected with 150 mg/kg lithium chloride (LiCl), with a control group receiving sodium chloride (NaCl). Alternate foods were then offered with corn …

Food Security Emergencies And The Power Of Eminent Domain: A Domestic Legal Tool To Treat A Global Problem, Robert H. Trudell
Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce
Part I of this Note examines how food insecurity threatens global security. Part II will examine ways that food insecurity is treated today through food aid and charity donated from the wealthy countries of the world. Part II will also discuss agricultural productivity: how it was improved tremendously in the twentieth-century using "Green Revolution" methods of agricultural production, and why such methods are not the optimal solution for the crisis ahead in the countries of sub-Saharan Africa. Part III first examines how intellectual property rights function in the United States and throughout the world, and then ends with a narrower …

Analysis of 163 putative Shigella isolates from Canada and the USA showed biochemical reactions consistent with Shigella species, although none of the isolates reacted with antiserum raised against any of the well-established or provisional Shigella serotypes. All these isolates, provisionally designated serotype SH108, were positive for the ipaH gene and the invasion-associated locus. All fermented mannitol, were serologically indistinguishable from each other and showed no reaction in antisera prepared against Escherichia coli serotypes O1 to O181. PCR-RFLP analysis of the genes involved in O-antigen synthesis revealed a common pattern among these isolates that was distinct from recognized Shigella serotypes and …

Previous studies from our laboratory have shown that ethanol consumption results in an increase in hepatocellular S-adenosylhomocysteine levels. Because S-adenosylhomocysteine is a potent inhibitor of methylation reactions, we propose that increased intracellular S-adenosylhomocysteine levels could be a major contributor to ethanol-induced pathologies. To test this hypothesis, hepatocytes isolated from rat livers were grown on collagen-coated plates in Williams’ medium E containing 5% FCS and exposed to varying concentrations of adenosine in order to increase intracellular S-adenosylhomocysteine levels. We observed increases in caspase-3 activity following exposure to adenosine. This increase in caspase activity correlated with increases in intracellular S-adenosylhomocysteine levels and …
Juvenile Green Turtle (Chelonia Mydas) Foraging Ecology:Feeding Selectivity And Forage Nutrient Analysis, Eliza Gilbert
Juvenile Green Turtle (Chelonia Mydas) Foraging Ecology:Feeding Selectivity And Forage Nutrient Analysis, Eliza Gilbert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For the endangered green turtle, Chelonia mydas, a fundamental component of recovery and conservation is an understanding of its foraging ecology. Foraging optimality models suggest animals will select resources of high quality over those of low quality. For green turtles, this behavior is important, as sufficient quantities of nutritionally adequate forage items are necessary for growth and reproduction. One intrinsic element in the understanding of green turtle foraging ecology is to identify and document the availability and quality of forage resources preferred by green turtles. The objectives of this study were: 1) determine whether juvenile green turtles showed a feeding …

A Study Of Somali Women In The Secular Work Setting, Maria R. Morland
Theses and Graduate Projects
This research study gives an overview of Somali culture and religion, and immigration to Minnesota. The study is based on quantitative research and qualitative data from interviews with five Somali Muslim women (aged 20-39) in the secular work setting. The study was conducted to learn about the experience of Somali women in the workplace relative to their religious practices. The women expressed some alienation but not discrimination in the workplace. This study provides valuable information for leaders and employers who employ Somalis. If the leadership of an organization has knowledge of the typical conflicts that might occur with Somalis in …
