Forage Quality--Back To Basics, Garry D. Lacefield Jan 2005

Forage Quality--Back To Basics, Garry D. Lacefield

Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention

Forage quality means different things to different people. Forage quality varies tremendously among and within forage crops. Forage quality needs varies among and within animal species. Forage quality has been defined in terms of protein, fiber, lignin content, relative feed value, relative forage quality, color, smell, leafiness, fineness of stems, total digestible nutrients, and other physical and/or chemical components. All of these components have merit, but all fall short of clearly defining forage quality. Factors such as average daily gains, conception rates, milk production, wool production, etc. are reliable indicators of forage quality. Forage quality can be defined as: the …

Standardizing Markers To Evaluate And Compare Their Performances, Margaret S. Pepe, Gary M. Longton Jan 2005

Standardizing Markers To Evaluate And Compare Their Performances, Margaret S. Pepe, Gary M. Longton

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Introduction: Markers that purport to distinguish subjects with a condition from those without a condition must be evaluated rigorously for their classification accuracy. A single approach to statistically evaluating and comparing markers is not yet established.

Methods: We suggest a standardization that uses the marker distribution in unaffected subjects as a reference. For an affected subject with marker value Y, the standardized placement value is the proportion of unaffected subjects with marker values that exceed Y.

Results: We apply the standardization to two illustrative datasets. In patients with pancreatic cancer placement values calculated for the CA 19-9 marker are smaller …

Background: The consistent finding of higher prevalence of hypertension in US blacks compared to whites has led to speculation that African-origin populations are particularly susceptible to this condition. Large surveys now provide new information on this issue. Methods: Using a standardized analysis strategy we examined prevalence estimates for 8 white and 3 black populations (N = 85,000 participants). Results: The range in hypertension prevalence was from 27 to 55% for whites and 14 to 44% for blacks. Conclusions: These data demonstrate that not only is there a wide variation in hypertension prevalence among both racial groups, the rates among blacks …

Using Ems’S To Improve Compliance On Livestock And Poultry Operations, L. Mark Risse, Richard K. Koelsch, W. L. Bland, Elizabeth A. Bird, Thomas M. Bass

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

Across the United States and abroad, innovative producers, processors, trade organizations and others in the agricultural sector are exploring the promise of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) to improve their environmental and business performance. An Environmental Management System or EMS helps farmers develop their own, personal strategies for reducing environmental risk on their operations by integrating environmental management considerations into production management decisions. It is a voluntary, flexible approach and is based on a producer's own sense of how best to manage an operation.

Partnerships for Livestock Environmental Management Systems is a 4-year project to explore the potential of livestock Environmental …

Secretion Of Recombinant Human Fibrinogen By The Murine Mammary Gland, William H. Velander Jan 2005

Secretion Of Recombinant Human Fibrinogen By The Murine Mammary Gland, William H. Velander

Papers in Biotechnology

Transgenic animals secreting individual chains and assembled fibrinogen were produced to evaluate the capacity of the mammary gland for maximizing assembly, glycosylation and secretion of recombinant human fibrinogen (rhfib). Transgenes were constructed from the 4.1 kbp murine Whey Acidic Protein promoter (mWAP) and the three cDNAs coding for the Aα,Bβ and γ fibrinogen chains. Transgenic mice secreted fully assembled fibrinogen into milk at concentrations between 10 and 200 μg/ml, with total secretion of subunits approaching 700 μ g/ml in milk. Partially purified fibrinogen was shown to form a visible and stable clot after treatment with human thrombin and factor XIII. …

Effects Of Food Deprivation On Blood Lipid Concentration And Composition In Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus), Michelle Lea Berman Jan 2005

Effects Of Food Deprivation On Blood Lipid Concentration And Composition In Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus), Michelle Lea Berman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Steller sea lions, the largest Otariid, fast during their breeding season; during this time they refrain from ingesting food for a period of 12-43 days. Fasting, while undertaking an extremely energetically demanding activity (breeding and pupping), requires specific physiological adaptations. This study examined the physiological response to fasting of two age classes, juveniles and sub-adults, during the breeding and non-breeding seasons to determine how these animals utilize lipids and the pattern of fatty acid mobilization from lipid stores during fasting. Four juveniles and 5 sub-adults were fasted for one and two weeks, respectively, and blood samples were collected approximately every …

Novel Protein-Protein Interactions Regulate The Proteolytic Activity Of The Pro- Apoptotic Serine Protease, Omi/Htra2, Supriya Singh Jan 2005

Novel Protein-Protein Interactions Regulate The Proteolytic Activity Of The Pro- Apoptotic Serine Protease, Omi/Htra2, Supriya Singh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Omi/HtrA2 is a mitochondrial serine protease with high homology to the bacterial HtrA proteins. Omi promotes caspase-dependent apoptosis by binding and degrading IAPs-inhibitor of apoptosis proteins. Omi can also induce caspase-independent apoptosis but the actual mechanism is still unknown. IAP's are not the only substrates cleaved by Omi. There are at least two more known substrates of Omi, the HAX-1 and the ped/pea-15 proteins. HS1-associated protein X-1 (HAX-1) is a mitochondrial protein, degraded by Omi after induction of caspase-dependent apoptosis. Ped/pea-15 is also an anti-apoptotic protein and is cleaved by Omi after induction of caspase-independent apoptosis. The proteolytic activity of …

Passive Immunization During Pregnancy For Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection, Giovanni Nigro, Stuart P. Adler, Renato La Torre, Al M. Best

Pediatrics Publications

BACKGROUND

Currently, there is no effective intervention for a primary cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection during pregnancy.

METHODS

We studied pregnant women with a primary CMV infection. The therapy group comprised women whose amniotic fluid contained either CMV or CMV DNA and who were offered intravenous CMV hyperimmune globulin at a dose of 200 U per kilogram of maternal weight. A prevention group, consisting of women with a recent primary infection before 21 weeks' gestation or who declined amniocentesis, was offered monthly hyperimmune globulin (100 U per kilogram intravenously).

RESULTS

In the therapy group, 31 women received hyperimmune globulin, only 1 (3 …

Platoma Chrysymenioides Sp. Nov. (Schizymeniaceae), And Sebdenia Integra Sp. Nov. (Sebdeniaceae), Two New Red Algal Species From The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, With A Phylogenetic Assessment Of The Cryptonemiales Complex (Rhodophyta), Brigitte Gavio, Emma Hickerson, Suzanne Fredericq

Gulf of Mexico Science

Recent collecting cruises conducted in the Northwestern Gulf of Mexico at 40- to 90-m depth revealed a diverse deepwater flora that is dominated by members of the Cryptonemiales complex. In this article, we describe two species new to science, Platoma chrysymenioides sp. nov. (Schizymeniaceae) and Sebdenia integra sp. nov. (Sebdeniaceae). Chloroplast-encoded rbcL sequence analyses corroborate morphological and nuclear small subunit ribosomal RNA gene data that the red algal orders Cryptonemiales and Rhodymeniales are closely related. The allied order Nemastomatales is strongly supported to include the Nemastomataceae and Schizymeniaceae, but the phylogenetic position of the Sebdeniaceae and Tsengiaceae remains equivocal. …

Pathologies Affecting Reef Corals At The Flower Garden Banks, Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Eric H. Borneman, Gerard M. Wellington Jan 2005

Pathologies Affecting Reef Corals At The Flower Garden Banks, Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Eric H. Borneman, Gerard M. Wellington

Gulf of Mexico Science

The Flower Garden Banks are high-latitude reefs consisting of coral caps on the top of salt domes in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Limited studies to date report low incidence of coral disease on these reefs. Surveys were conducted to document the extent of coral diseases throughout the Flower Garden Banks, including types of disease present, species affected, percentage of recent colony mortality, cases of "false" disease, and descriptions of new pathologies. Very few of the known (or reported) Western Atlantic diseases were found, and they occurred at extremely low frequencies. Tissue-skeletal anomalies were common. Several conditions resembled known diseases, …
