Is Climate Change The 21st Century’S Most Urgent Environmental Problem?, Indur M. Goklany
Is Climate Change The 21st Century’S Most Urgent Environmental Problem?, Indur M. Goklany
Center for Applied Economics
Some have argued that the Kyoto Protocol and other schemes for immediately mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are justified because human-induced global warming is, in the words of the 42nd U.S. President, William J. Clinton, “the overriding environmental challenge” facing the globe today.1 Another argument, advanced by those who are more cautious and perhaps less prone to hyperbole, is that the impacts of global warming – on top of myriad other global public health and environmental threats – may prove to be the proverbial “straw that broke the camel’s back.” They suggest that climate change will overwhelm human and natural …

In between Work and School: Youth Perspectives of an Urban Afterschool Multimedia Literacy Program
By Katherine Schultz, Edward Brockenbrough, and Jaskiran Dhillon
In recent years, afterschool programs have come to be envisioned as sites for addressing the failure of urban schools to provide adolescents with the requisite skills and knowledge to participate in a rapidly shifting social, political, and economic landscape. The purpose and nature of such educational endeavors has taken many varied forms, as a growing number of stakeholders become invested in shaping the direction and implementation of afterschool programming. However, youth, as the recipients of these programs, have …

Natural Loggers: Leaf Cutter Ants As Pests In Northwestern Ecuador, Aaron Honig
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The biological world is under attack. All across the world in every continent and sub-continent biological diversity is rapidly decreasing (Wilson, 1999). As the human population continues to exponentially increase, especially in Third World countries where biological diversity reaches its peak, countless diverse biological habitats are threatened by accelerating human consumption and the growing needs of growing human populations. In Ecuador, only 1% of the original tropical forest remains, as a result of the accelerating need of viable agricultural tracts for Ecuador’s relatively poor farmers, as well as the unsustainable harvest of valuable hardwood tree species endemic to Ecuador’s primary …

Producing Pulses In The Northern Agricultural Region, Peter White, Martin Harries, Mark Seymour, Pam Burgess
Bulletins 4000 -
Pulses, like most other temperate crops, are ideally suited to environments with mild temperatures, adequate rainfall and free draining soils that have a deep uniform profile, a medium to fine texture and slightly acid to neutral pH (6.5-7.5). Pulses when grown on these soils and in these environments produce reliable yields, are relatively easy to manage and achieve good returns on investment.
Pulses can be grown very successfully in less ideal situations, but must then be managed carefully to ensure reliable yields. The different pulse species, and even different varieties of the same species, vary in how tolerant they are …
Reframing Agribusiness: Moving From Farm To Market Centric, Clifford J. Shultz, Mark R. Edwards
Reframing Agribusiness: Moving From Farm To Market Centric, Clifford J. Shultz, Mark R. Edwards
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Agribusiness is moving from farm to market centric, where effective activities anticipate and respond to customers, markets, and the systems in which they function. This evolution requires a broader conceptualization and more accurate definition, to convey a more dynamic, systemic, and integrative discipline, which increasingly is committed to value creation and the sustainable orchestration of food, fiber, and renewable resources. We discuss the forces driving this shift to the market, offer a new and more representative definition of agribusiness, provide models to illustrate some of the most compelling trends, and articulate key elements and implications of those models.

Migrant And Seasonal Farmworkers: Health Insurance Coverage And Access To Care, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Peter Shin
Migrant And Seasonal Farmworkers: Health Insurance Coverage And Access To Care, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Peter Shin
Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications
Migrant and seasonal farmworkers are an integral support to the nation's agricultural industry. Nearly three million workers earn their living through migrant or seasonal farm labor. Migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families confront health challenges stemming from the nature of their work, their extreme poverty and mobility, and living and working arrangements that impede access to health coverage and care. This brief provides an overview of migrant and seasonal farmworkers and the health challenges they face and considers options for improving their health coverage and access to care.

Health experts in Kenya have warned that the continued usage of leaded fuel in the region could increase the number of deaths from respiratory illnesses. Top environmental scientists with the United Nations Environment Programme (“UNEP”) concluded that Nairobi, Kenya is one of the most highly polluted cities in the world, in part due to the vehicles and leaded fuel used in the city. Leaded fuel exacerbates the problem by destroying the catalytic converters in vehicles, which normally act as pollution guards.
Preventing Childhood Obesity, Elena Serrano, Ruby Cox
Preventing Childhood Obesity, Elena Serrano, Ruby Cox
Food Assistance
Childhood obesity is now a nation- al epidemic with more than one out of eight children considered overweight. While there is heightened concern about the physical and emotional consequences of childhood obesity, there are numerous challenges in addressing the issue. First, several states do not have consistent and reliable sources of data on childhood overweight, including poten- tial contributors, that provide insight into the extent and degree of the problem. Second, the contributors to childhood obesity are multi-factorial and complex. Finally, the solutions require a multi- pronged and, in some cases, systemic approach. Nevertheless, several legisla- tive opportunities exist to …
