Improving Fairness And Accuracy In Food Stamp Fraud Investigations: Advocating Reform Under Food Stamp Regulations, David A. Super May 2005

Improving Fairness And Accuracy In Food Stamp Fraud Investigations: Advocating Reform Under Food Stamp Regulations, David A. Super

Faculty Scholarship

Some state food stamp agencies are overly aggressive in pursuing charges that claimants have committed intentional program violations. Just as failure to pursue allegations of fraud can undermine the Food Stamp Program’s goals, so can intimidation of claimants. States should take care to follow appropriate procedures in their investigations, and Food and Nutrition Service regulations offer ample grounds to advocate fair treatment of clients. Four key principles should guide states’ antifraud efforts.

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Over the past several years, increased attention has been focused on the importance of health information to health care quality improvement. The level of focus on health information has increased with the advent of electronic medical records and electronic health information systems designed to facilitate the use of health care data. Although these systems are still in their relative infancy, they hold enormous promise for revolutionizing the availability and use of health information to improve clinical performance, empower employers and consumers to better understand health plan choices and facilitate health claims administration. Their potential has been a catalyst for change …

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

An ultrasonic technique was developed to study the crystallization process of edible fats on-line. A chirp wave was used instead of the conventional pulser signal, thus achieving a higher signal-to-noise ratio. This enabled measurements to be made in concentrated systems [≈20% solid fat content (SFC)] through a 8.11-cm thick sample without significant signal loss. Fat samples were crystallized at 20, 25, and 30°C at a constant agitation rate of 400 rpm for 90 min. The crystallization process was followed by ultrasonic spectroscopy and a low-resolution pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer. Specific relationships were found between ultrasonic parameters [integrated response, time …

The Contagion: Sin And The Human Person From The Cappadocian Perspective, Brice John Tennant May 2005

The Contagion: Sin And The Human Person From The Cappadocian Perspective, Brice John Tennant

Doctor of Ministry

This thesis examines the nature of sin and its effects on human nature in the thought of Gregory of Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa. In order to achieve this, it opens with an exploration of the original created state of human nature and the telos or purpose God established for it, then moves to a survey of the origin and ontology of evil, followed by a discussion of humanity in Paradise, and concludes with the state of human nature after the transgression. The human being is found to be a creature of composite nature, uniting soul and matter. It possesses …

Actual And Ideal Self Discrepancy And Body Satisfaction, Sheena Moyers May 2005

Actual And Ideal Self Discrepancy And Body Satisfaction, Sheena Moyers

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Over the past decade, there has been an increase in research and concern over body image and body attitudes in both clinical and community settings (Sondhaus, Kurtz, & Strube, 2001). Historically, body image has been thought to be more important to women than to men. However, recently male body image has begun to increase in importance. Over the past few decades, men have been facing increased societal pressure, concerning the type of body that they should have. One such way that pressure is manifested is through muscle dysmorphia, and a potential influence on muscle dysmorphia is self-concept. Self-concept may interact …

Exposure Assessment Of Mercury In Fish From Kentucky Surface Waters, Najla Gubari May 2005

Exposure Assessment Of Mercury In Fish From Kentucky Surface Waters, Najla Gubari

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Consumption of fish contaminated with mercury is the primary exposure pathway by which humans are exposed to mercury. Mercury is known to be a neurological toxin that can cause attention and language deficits, impaired memory, and impaired visual and motor function, especially in children under the age of six. In addition, mercury exposure can lead to other health problems in adults, such as damage to the kidney and increased risk of coronary heart disease. This study assesses the exposure to mercury through consumption of fish from Kentucky surface waters. The exposure assessment is based on data collected by the Kentucky …

Determining The Effects Of Psychosocial Interventions On Quality Of Life For Cancer Patients: Analysis Of Pilot Data And Recommendations For Full Experimental Design And Statistical Analysis, Sarah Julia Thomas

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The Hematology and Oncology Specialists Foundation plans to carry out a scientific study to assess the effects of several of its psychosocial interventions, or “wellness programs,” on the quality of life (QoL) experienced by cancer patients. Pilot data showed that participation in a meditation program significantly reduced the symptoms of stress experienced by the patients (t = 2.70, p = 0.011), and that participation in psychological counseling significantly reduced the anxiety and depression levels of the patients (t = 5.33, p = 0.002; t = 8.70, p < 0.001, respectively).

The full scale study has a 6×2 factorial design with six treatments (non-participation, …

Serum Creatinine As Marker Of Kidney Function In South Asians: A Study Of Reduced Gfr In Adults In Pakistan, Tazeen H. Jafar, Christopher H. Schmid, Andrew S. Levey

Section of Nephrology

Migrant populations of South Asian origin have a higher risk for chronic kidney disease than the native whites. Several formulas have been developed to estimate kidney function from serum creatinine concentration. However, none of these has been validated in the South Asian population, which generally has different muscle mass composition than whites. A population-based cross-sectional study was performed on 262 individuals who were aged > or = 40 yr in Karachi, Pakistan. Reduced GFR was defined as creatinine clearance (Ccr) measured in 24-h urine collection of /min per 1.73 m2. Creatinine excretion was compared with age- and gender-matched white individuals by …

Characterization Of Microbial Communities In Karstic Sediments : A Study Of Cave Bacteria In Central Kentucky., Justine Kay Roback 1964- May 2005

Characterization Of Microbial Communities In Karstic Sediments : A Study Of Cave Bacteria In Central Kentucky., Justine Kay Roback 1964-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Few previous studies have compared microbial communities in subterranean and surface environments. Chemical analyses used to characterize the surface and cave microbial environments indicated limited exchange between surface and subsurface waters. Here, bacterial communities from four distinct cave sediments collected in central Kentucky and adjacent surface streams were compared using a combination of culture and molecular methods. Predictions were that: 1) Cave communities will have unique community structures when compared to those of nearby surface sediments, and 2) Genetic diversity of bacterial communities in cave sediments will be higher than those in nearby surface sediments. Since diversity and community structure …

Induction Of Lineage And Differentiation Of Adult Human Neuroepithelial Progenitors In Vitro., Xiaodong Zhang 1968- May 2005

Induction Of Lineage And Differentiation Of Adult Human Neuroepithelial Progenitors In Vitro., Xiaodong Zhang 1968-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Neurosphere forming cells (NSFCs) have been derived from cultures of adult olfactory neuroepithelium obtained from patients and cadavers in serum rich medium. These neural progenitors remain undifferentiated when maintained in serum rich medium but have the potential to differentiate along glial or neuronal lineages. A totally defined medium (DM) was employed to examine their proliferation, lineage restriction and differentiation. None of the neurotrophic factors evaluated increased NSFCs viability or lineage restriction under the defined experimental conditions. Few of NSFCs ever express mature neuronal or glial markers in DM. To evaluate the potential of NSFCs to form oligodendrocytes, transcription factors, Olig2, …
