Testing Stark's Thesis: Is Mormonism The First New World Religion Since Islam?, Gerald R. Mcdermott

BYU Studies

I n 1984, Rodney Stark startled the academic world with a claim that has kept sociologists and religion-watchers scratching their heads ever since. “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormons,” he predicted, “will soon achieve a worldwide following comparable to that of Islam, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, and the other dominant world faiths.”¹ Stark claimed that Mormonism has grown faster than any other new religion in American history. Between 1840 and 1980, it had averaged a growth rate of 44 percent per decade; in the four decades 1940 through 1980, growth zoomed to an astonishing 53 percent. If …

Atticus Finch, Boris A. Max, And The Lawyer's Dilemma, Robert Batey Oct 2005

Atticus Finch, Boris A. Max, And The Lawyer's Dilemma, Robert Batey

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

For as long as I have taught law and literature, I have held strong opinions about two fictional criminal defense attorneys, the world-famous Atticus Finch of the novel and film To Kill a Mockingbird' and the less celebrated Boris A. Max, Bigger Thomas's attorney in Richard Wright's Native Son.' Atticus and Max, both white, courageously defend black men charged with capital crimes by a racist legal system, both are vilified by the public, and both of them see their clients die at the hands of the state. But despite their courage, my opinion of each was that he failed his …

Redemptive Memory: The Christianization Of The Holocaust In America, Laura Bender Herron Oct 2005

Redemptive Memory: The Christianization Of The Holocaust In America, Laura Bender Herron

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

There has been a considerable debate among historians concerning the role of the Holocaust in the American collective memory. Since the watershed year 1993, when the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum opened its doors on the Mall in Washington, DC, and the film Schindler’s List debuted, the level of awareness of the Holocaust in the public mind has been at an all-time high in the United States. The question at the heart of this academic discussion is how Americans have come to identify so strongly with an experience that occurred over sixty years ago, on foreign shores, to a group …

Why The Federal Marriage Amendment Is Not Only Not Necessary, But A Bad Idea: A Response To Christopher Wolfe, Michael Perry Aug 2005

Why The Federal Marriage Amendment Is Not Only Not Necessary, But A Bad Idea: A Response To Christopher Wolfe, Michael Perry

San Diego Law Review

The Federal Marriage Amendment does more than prevent same-sex couples from having marital status. In response to Professor Wolfe, this article contends that the Federal Marriage Amendment prevents state courts and state legislatures from choosing to grant marital status to same-sex couples. Gender complimentarity, the heart of Professor Wolfe's argument and the Federal Marriage Amendment's basis, is too controversial and problematic to bind future generations from allowing same-sex marriage. Even if society is currently opposed to same-sex marriage, this author concludes that the U.S. Constitution should not be amended in a way that prevents future generations from deciding whether to …

Ecstatic Morality And Sexual Politics: A Catholic And Antitotalitarian Theory Of The Body, Graham James Mcaleer May 2005

Ecstatic Morality And Sexual Politics: A Catholic And Antitotalitarian Theory Of The Body, Graham James Mcaleer

Religion

This first book-length treatment of Thomas Aquinas’s theory of the body presents a Catholic understanding of the body and its implications for social and political philosophy. Making a fundamental contribution to antitotalitarian theory, McAleer argues that a sexual politics reliant upon Aquinas’s theory of the body is better (because less violent) than other commonly available theories. He contrasts this theory with those of four other groups of thinkers: the continental tradition represented by Kant, Schopenhauer, Merleau-Ponty, Nancy, Levinas, and Deleuze; feminism, in the work of Donna Haraway; an alternative Catholic theory to be found in Karl Rahner; and the “Radical …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Value Claims In The Glenn Beck Program, James John Bailey

Theses and Dissertations

A Rhetorical Analysis o f Value Claims in the Glenn Beck Program explores the use o f rhetoric to promote morals and traditional Judaeo-Christian values on Glenn Beck’s radio program to the greater society. This value analysis seeks to reveal the quality o f the argumentation that is implemented and a selection o f the theoretical reasons for its appeal to the program’s listeners. The program extols a traditional Judaeo- Christian view that is not commonly seen or practiced in America after the decade o f the 1940s. Impact Of Classics Of Western Spirituality On The Discipline Of Christian Spirituality, Sandra Marie Schneiders Apr 2005

Impact Of Classics Of Western Spirituality On The Discipline Of Christian Spirituality, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

First became aware of the need for something like the Classics of Western Spirituality (CWS) in the late 1960's and early 1970's when I was working on my licentiate thesis in Paris. My subject was the understanding of consecrated virginity in the first four centuries of Christianity. I was motivated to study this subject by two hunches, both confirmed by my subsequent research: first, that the spirituality of Catholic Religious Life, both monastic and ministerial, as it developed in the Christian tradition, was actually rooted historically and mystically in the commitment of the consecrated virgins in the first three centuries …

Role Of Accounting Practices In The Disempowerment Of The Coahuiltecan Indians, Sarah A. Holmes, Sandra T. Welch, Laura R. Knudson Jan 2005

Role Of Accounting Practices In The Disempowerment Of The Coahuiltecan Indians, Sarah A. Holmes, Sandra T. Welch, Laura R. Knudson

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper argues that a complex of accounting measures : account books, inventories of accumulated wealth, and detailed instructions for production performance : were used to inculcate Western values into the native population located at five Franciscan missions along the San Antonio River in New Spain (present-day Texas) from 1718 to 1794. Bolstered by the need to alleviate communications problems caused by extreme isolation, the missionaries constructed detailed mission documents that described the acquisition of scarce resources, reported the aggregation of material and spiritual mission wealth, and controlled daily production performance of the native population. In short, the resulting mission …

Law, Medicine, And Religion: Towards A Dialogue And A Partnership In Biomedical Technology And Decision Making, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

Faith, religion, spirituality, and prayer have a current focused outreach and easy parlance in the market places and public squares of the nation. News stories and court cases abound with dramatic challenges to the placement of monuments to the Ten Commandments in public buildings and grounds, the use of God's name in school pledges of allegiance, the teaching of Darwinian or evolutionary science in public education, the role of faith and religion in health care healing, and even the value of affirmations of religious faith on the political hustings. The purpose of this article is to explore the conjunctive and …
