Plants have been the chief source of compounds of medicine for thousand of years. Plants are also the source of many medicines for the majority of the worldÂ’s population. The role of biotechnology is very important for multiplying, conserving the spesies, and enhancing the production of secondary metabolites. Endophytes are microbes that inhabit plants are currently considered to be a wellspring of novel secondary metabolites offering the potensial for medical and industrial exploitation. Natural products from various endophytic microbes have been investigated. Some examples of natural products observed from endophytic microbes are antibiotics, antiviral compounds, anticancers, antimalarial compounds, antioxidants, antidiabetics, …

A method by high performance liquid chromatography for the analysis of acrylamide in potato chips, is reported. The retention time for the elution of acrylamide from the C18RP column ranged from 3 to 3,2 minutes, and the eluate was analyzed by UV-VIS detector. A linear response was found for the acrylamide standard tested within the concentration range of 0,8 – 10µg/ml and the corelation coefficient (r) greater than 0,999, with detection limit 0,06 ppm and quantitative limit 0,19 ppm. Sample preparation was performed by means of solvent extraction using dichlormethane and subsequent re-extraction of the organic solvent with water. This …

Chitosan is a polycatonic biopolymer that can form gel in acidic environment so that can be used as a hydrophilic matrix in controlled release drug delivery system. In this research, propranolol hydrochloride controlled release granule was made in chitosan matrix. Granules were made by wet granulation method with variety of matrices, i.e. chitosan, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and ethyl cellulose (EC). HPMC and EC were used as a comparing matrix. The release rates of propranolol HCl from matrix were determined by using dissolution apparatus type I with 50 rpm stirring rotation in acidic media of pH 1,2 and base media of …

Sphingosine 1-phosphate is a bioactive sphingolipid that regu- lates cell growth and suppresses programmed cell death. The bio- synthesis of sphingosine 1-phosphate is catalyzed by sphingosine kinase (SK) but the mechanism by which the subcellular localization and activity of SK is regulated in response to various stimuli is not fully understood. To elucidate the origin and structural determi- nant of the specific subcellular localization of SK, we performed biophysical and cell studies of human SK1 (hSK1) and selected mutants. In vitro measurements showed that hSK1 selectively bound phosphatidylserine over other anionic phospholipids and strongly preferred the plasma membrane-mimicking membrane to …

Tworzenie Projektu Budżetu Państwa W Polsce W Świetle Doświadczeń Wybranych Krajów, Arkadiusz Piotrowski
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
Artykuł stanowi próbę oceny – w świetle doświadczeń wybranych państw UE – efektywności rządowego systemu decyzyjnego w Polsce w zakresie projektowania budżetu państwa, a także zarys pożądanych kierunków zmian.

Nonparametric Control Chart For The Range, Arnold J. Stromberg
Statistics Faculty Patents
A method is provided for detecting or predicting an undesired deviation in variability of at least one parameter being monitored, wherein the variation in the parameter is incrementally recorded. The method comprises establishing the number of subsets of a dataset that have a range of the difference between any two datapoints within the dataset, and computing a control chart for the range based thereon. The method accurately detects changes in variability in real time. The true distribution of the data is reflected, and the desired result is achieved without requiring an inordinate number of computations.

Framing Race: The Election Of The First African-American Mayor Of Jackson, Mississippi, Byron D. Orey
Framing Race: The Election Of The First African-American Mayor Of Jackson, Mississippi, Byron D. Orey
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
“Lord have mercy! We're going to have a black mayor in Jackson, in Jackson, Mississippi.” — An anonymous black woman quoted in Chappell (1997)
The above epigraph expresses the shock within the black community of Jackson, Mississippi, when Harvey Johnson was elected as the city's first African-American mayor in June, 1997. Surprisingly, four years earlier Johnson failed to win the Democratic nomination for the mayor's office. How did Johnson rebound from his earlier defeat in the 1993 Democratic mayoral primary election? In other words, how does one explain Johnson's historic victory—the first African-American mayor of Jackson, Mississippi—in light of his …

Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived Hematopoietic Stem Cells, Yuan Wang, Frank Yates, Olaia Naveiras, Patricia Ernst, George Q. Daley
Dartmouth Scholarship
Despite two decades of studies documenting the in vitro blood-forming potential of murine embryonic stem cells (ESCs), achieving stable long-term blood engraftment of ESC-derived hematopoietic stem cells in irradiated mice has proven difficult. We have exploited the Cdx-Hox pathway, a genetic program important for blood development, to enhance the differentiation of ESCs along the hematopoietic lineage. Using an embryonic stem cell line engineered with tetracycline-inducible Cdx4 , we demonstrate that ectopic Cdx4 expression promotes hematopoietic mesoderm specification, increases hematopoietic progenitor formation, and, together with HoxB4, enhances multilineage hematopoietic engraftment of lethally irradiated adult mice. Clonal analysis of retroviral integration sites …
Predicted Redidual Strength Of Damaged Isotrussâ® Structures, Travis S. Carroll
Predicted Redidual Strength Of Damaged Isotrussâ® Structures, Travis S. Carroll
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis utilized a linear analytical approach to explore the damage tolerance or residual strength as a function of increasing damage in traditional single and hybrid-grid IsoTruss® structures. Residual strength was studied for structures subjected to axial compression, torsion and flexural bending, independently. Carbon/epoxy material properties were applied in all load cases, and fiberglass/epoxy material properties were also applied in the flexural bending case. Prior to imposing damage conditions, the IsoTruss® structures were parametrically optimized to achieve the highest strength-to-weight ratios. Typical compression strut, driveshaft, and utility pole specifications governed the design strength dimensions and boundary conditions. Damage growth was …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
It is conventional knowledge that heterotrophic bacteria play a key role in the biogeochemical cycling of oceanic carbon. However, only recently has their role in marine iron ( Fe) biogeochemical cycles been examined. Research during this past decade has demonstrated an inextricable link between Fe chemistry and the biota, as >99% of Fe in marine systems is complexed to organic chelates of unknown but obviously biotic origin. Here we present a novel approach to assess and compare Fe bioavailability in low Fe HNLC waters using a bioluminescent bacterial reporter that quantitatively responds to the concentration of bioavailable Fe by producing …
