Acoustic Point-Source Reflection From A Seabed With A Non-Uniform Fluid-Like Sediment Layer, Jin-Yuan Liu, Chung-Ray Chu, Yung-Hong Wu, Hsin-Hung Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Acoustic point-source reflection from a non-uniform seabed within which the density and sound speed vary continuously with depth is considered in this paper. This fundamental problem has illuminated many interesting phenomena about the effects of sediment stratification on acoustic wave interactions with the seabed. The analysis employs the analytical solutions for the Helmholtz equation in the sediment layer, in which the density and the sound speed are, respectively, described by three kinds of geological models. The results have demonstrated that the effects of sediment stratification are confined in a region in range, where the reflection field is dominated by the …

Teaching Strategies In Mathematics: Differences In Sign Language Use, Heather A. Rowley Sep 2005

Teaching Strategies In Mathematics: Differences In Sign Language Use, Heather A. Rowley

Theses

Problem: The proposed project addresses a critical problem facing most schools serving Deaf students in grades Kindergarten through college- insufficient clarity of sign communication by teachers due to wide variation in sign abilities. Today a very small number of teachers of the Deaf use American Sign Language in the classroom. Most teachers use other variations of sign language such as (1) Pidgin Signed English, (2) Signed English, (3) Simultaneous Communication, (4) Total Communication. Clear and effective communication is critically important to both students' learning in school and their success in future careers. Proposed Project Activities: This project will develop and …

Induction Of P38- And Gc1qr-Dependent Il-8 Expression In Pulmonary Fibroblasts By Soluble Hepatitis C Core Protein, Jonathan P. Moorman, S. Matthew Fitzgerald, Deborah C. Prayther, Steven A. Lee, David S. Chi, Guha Krishnaswamy

ETSU Faculty Works

Background: Recent studies suggest that HCV infection is associated with progressive declines in pulmonary function in patients with underlying pulmonary diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Few molecular studies have addressed the inflammatory aspects of HCV-associated pulmonary disease. Because IL-8 plays a fundamental role in reactive airway diseases, we examined IL-8 signaling in normal human lung fibroblasts (NHLF) in response to the HCV nucleocapsid core protein, a viral antigen shown to modulate intracellular signaling pathways involved in cell proliferation, apoptosis and inflammation. Methods: NHLF were treated with HCV core protein and assayed for IL-8 expression, phosphorylation of …

Electrochemical Attachment Of Motile Bacterial Cells To Gold, Sergey Rozhok, Richard C. Holz Sep 2005

Electrochemical Attachment Of Motile Bacterial Cells To Gold, Sergey Rozhok, Richard C. Holz

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Selective attachment of Escherichia coli K-12 bacterial cells to charged gold surfaces was demonstrated. Electrostatic binding of E. coli K-12 bacterial cells to positively charged surfaces was observed starting at +750 mV. The binding of E. coli K-12 cells to positively charged gold surfaces is proposed to occur due to long-range electrostatic interactions between the negatively charged O-chain of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) molecules protruding the bacterial cell body and the electrode surface. Removing LPS alters the cellular surface charge and results in cellular attachment to negatively charged surfaces. Thus, applying an electrical potential allows for the direct, real time detection of …
