Seeking Story: Finding The Modern Day Folktale In The Daily News, Brandice Palmer Nov 2005

Seeking Story: Finding The Modern Day Folktale In The Daily News, Brandice Palmer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the local news story for evidence of the folktale tradition. It examines a range of local news stories for their folktale functions. The study compares the cultural and psychological function of the news story to that of the folktale and compares the functional definition of folklore to that of journalism. The study also explores the idea of a classifiable sphere of formal character, motif and plot functions that may be explored within the news story and folktale texts. This study builds on the premise that the study of folklore should be at the center of a consideration …

Globalisation And Urban Crime: Mean Streets Or Lost Suburbs, Mark Findlay Nov 2005

Globalisation And Urban Crime: Mean Streets Or Lost Suburbs, Mark Findlay

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This parer introduces notions of contemporary globalisation and the manner in which crime and glotalisation interrelate. In particular, the importance of analysing crime and control at both local and global levels is emphasised. Issues of crime and space are addressed in the context of urbanisation. The tendencies of the city to marginalise, and the consequential criminal outcomes from this environment of modernisation (and the modem city) are discussed. Urban planning has had a crucial part to play in humanising and at the same time distinguishing the global push towards urbanisation, and crime prevention is now a recognised feature of globalised …

Psychosocial Responses By Adolescent Male Victims To Peer Bullying, Karin Eve Reuter-Rice Phd Nov 2005

Psychosocial Responses By Adolescent Male Victims To Peer Bullying, Karin Eve Reuter-Rice Phd

Dissertations

Bullying remains a pervasive problem in most schools throughout the nation. Peer-bullied victims report higher levels of depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, and concerns regarding their safety in school. Reactions of victims to peer bullying have been extreme, as in the cases of the rampage school shooters. Primarily, current research has not focused on the high school adolescent, although most school shooters arise from that age group. The overall purpose of this study was to examine the psychosocial responses by adolescent male victims to peer bullying. Research questions addressed the frequency and severity of peer-victimization, distress, anxiety, and their perception of …

Picture This, Gary Bentrup, Gary Wells Nov 2005

Picture This, Gary Bentrup, Gary Wells

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Despite the use of planting plans and engineering drawings. Many landowners find it difficult to conceptualize what a future conservation practice or system will actually look like on their landscape. This lack of understanding can create challenging barriers in the planning process and is exacerbated by the long-term commitment that many conservation systems require from landowners. Landowners often lament if they could only see a picture of the proposed action on their property, then they could make a decision. Fortunately, natural resource professionals have a tool called visual simulations to help address this dilemma.

The Pp24 Phosphoprotein Of Mason-Pfizer Monkey Virus Contributes To Viral Genome Packaging, Christopher R. Bohl, Shanna M. Brown, Robert A. Weldon Jr. Nov 2005

The Pp24 Phosphoprotein Of Mason-Pfizer Monkey Virus Contributes To Viral Genome Packaging, Christopher R. Bohl, Shanna M. Brown, Robert A. Weldon Jr.

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Background: The Gag protein of Mason-Pfizer monkey virus, a betaretrovirus, contains a phosphoprotein that is cleaved into the Np24 protein and the phosphoprotein pp16/18 during virus maturation. Previous studies by Yasuda and Hunter (J. Virology. 1998. 72:4095–4103) have demonstrated that pp16/18 contains a viral late domain required for budding and that the Np24 protein plays a role during the virus life cycle since deletion of this N-terminal domain blocked virus replication. The function of the Np24 domain, however, is not known.

Results: Here we identify a region of basic residues (KKPKR) within the Np24 domain that is highly conserved …

Review Of Johanna Oksala's Foucault On Freedom, Ladelle Mcwhorter Nov 2005

Review Of Johanna Oksala's Foucault On Freedom, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Johanna Oksala has produced a provocative reading of Michel Foucault's work on the issues of freedom and resistance to normalizing oppression. Although many commentators have contended that Foucault's historicization of subjectivity leads to metaphysical determinism and eliminates the very possibility of freedom in human life, Oksala argues that his radical rethinking of both bodies and freedom largely escapes the simplistic criticisms routinely put forward since the early 1980s. She does subject Foucault's work to criticisms of her own, however. While the title of her book leads the reader to expect a tight focus on the question of freedom, much of …

Exploiting Self-Adaptive Posture-Based Focus Estimation For Lecture Video Editing, Feng Wang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong Nov 2005

Exploiting Self-Adaptive Posture-Based Focus Estimation For Lecture Video Editing, Feng Wang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Head pose plays a special role in estimating a presenter’s focuses and actions for lecture video editing. This paper presents an efficient and robust head pose estimation algorithm to cope with the new challenges arising in the content management of lecture videos. These challenges include speed requirement, low video quality, variant presenting styles and complex settings in modern classrooms. Our algorithm is based on a robust hierarchical representation of skin color clustering and a set of pose templates that are automatically trained. Contextual information is also considered to refine pose estimation. Most importantly, we propose an online learning approach to …

Intellectual Property, Trade & Development: The State Of Play, Daniel J. Gervais Nov 2005

Intellectual Property, Trade & Development: The State Of Play, Daniel J. Gervais

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This Article considers, first, available economic, social, and cultural analyses of the impact of intellectual property protection in developing countries. Economics provides a useful set of analytical tools and are directly relevant, in particular since the successfully arranged marriage of IP and trade rules after which it became inevitable that IP rules would be measured using an economic yardstick. The Paper also considers the claim that making proper intellectual property policy is impossible or inherently unreliable because theoretical models are inadequate or valid empirical data unavailable. Against this backdrop, the Article then examines the emergence of the World Trade Organization …

The Individual As Polluter, Michael P. Vandenbergh Nov 2005

The Individual As Polluter, Michael P. Vandenbergh

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Individuals are the largest source ofdioxin emissions, contribute almost one-third ofall ozone precursor emissions, and are afar larger source of several other air toxics than all large industrial sources combined. Thus, after more than 30 years ofregulation largely directed at industry, individual behavior has emerged as a leading source ofpollution. Prof Michael P. Vandenbergh argues that treating individual behavior as a discrete source of pollution can lead to the development of viable, innovative regulatory instruments that have the prospect of achieving pollution reductions at a relatively low cost. The creation ofan individual toxic release inventory, for example, is one such …

“Of Course They Claim They Were Coerced”: On Voluntary Prostitution, Contingent Consent, And The Modified Whore Stigma, Yenwen Peng Nov 2005

“Of Course They Claim They Were Coerced”: On Voluntary Prostitution, Contingent Consent, And The Modified Whore Stigma, Yenwen Peng

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper starts with a reflection on the main tactic adopted during the Taipei prostitutes’ movement, namely, the “poverty as force” rationale, and argues that a campaign strategy that focuses on the justification of prostitutes’ consent to their job does not help them much; instead, it reinforces the stigma on “voluntary” prostitutes. I suggest that sex workers’ activism abandons the now dominant “voluntary vs. forced” division of prostitution and, emphasizes the working conditions of sex workers rather than the reasons that underlie those workers’ consent. This suggestion by no means implies that we neglect the critical moral value of consent. …

Women World Leaders: Comparative Analysis And Gender Experiences, Robert P. Watson, Alicia Jencik, Judith A. Selzer Nov 2005

Women World Leaders: Comparative Analysis And Gender Experiences, Robert P. Watson, Alicia Jencik, Judith A. Selzer

Journal of International Women's Studies

Research suggests that executive political office poses additional and different political challenges for women than legislative office. Yet, a few dozen women have attained their nations’ highest executive office. Surprisingly little research has been devoted to the experiences of these women world leaders. This study builds profiles of the women world leaders in the modern era and analyzes their backgrounds and political experiences in an effort to both identify commonalities among the women leaders and assess the challenges they faced on account of their sex.

Gender: Kosova’S Other Challenge, Richard Beilock, Ymer Havolli Nov 2005

Gender: Kosova’S Other Challenge, Richard Beilock, Ymer Havolli

Journal of International Women's Studies

The extent of differences in roles between the genders in Kosova is examined. Kosovar men, on average, devote 57 percent of their non-rest time to earned income activities (i.e., agriculture, other self-employed, and hired), and only 4 percent to housekeeping. In very sharp contrast, Kosovar women, on average, devote 14 percent of their time to earned income activities and a staggering 65 percent to housekeeping. There are considerable differences across Kosova’s ethnic groups, with much less rigid gender roles among ethnic Serbians than is true for ethnic Albanians. It is argued that rigidly defined gender roles result in significant inefficiencies …

Weight Control Behavior And Women: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Jacqueline A. Walcott-Mcquigg Nov 2005

Weight Control Behavior And Women: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Jacqueline A. Walcott-Mcquigg

Journal of International Women's Studies

The objective of this study was to seek directly from culturally diverse women information on their weight control behavior. Specific questions were: What types of weight control behavior are practiced by women? 2) What factors influence participation in weight control behavior? and, 3) what are the cultural influences on women’s motivation and ability to participate in weight control behavior? Face-to-face in-depth interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of 135 middle-income women (African American, Caucasian, Mexican American, Puerto Rican) in their homes, offices, and at other places in their neighborhoods. Additional data collection included measuring body weight and height. The …
