Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The discovery and subsequent commercial exploitation of oil in the Arabian Gulf region has brought profound and far-reaching change to the peoples of the area. What has happened has been nothing short of a transformation from desert sheikdoms into modem nation states; The Sultanate of Oman is one of those states. Although Oman is not a major oil producer in world terms, it has been able to use its oil revenues over the past three decades to finance the establishment of a modem infrastructure and to develop its social and economic systems. Notwithstanding the success of Oman's national development efforts thus …

Survivability Through Pre-Configured Protection In Optical Mesh Networks, Quoc V. Phung Jan 2005

Survivability Through Pre-Configured Protection In Optical Mesh Networks, Quoc V. Phung

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Network survivability is a very important issue, especially in optical networks that carry huge amount of traffic. Network failures which may be caused by human errors, malfunctional systems and natural disaster (eg. Earthquakes and lightening storms), have occurred quite frequently and sometimes with unpredictable consequences. Survivability is defined as the ability of the network to maintain the continuity of service against failures of network components. Pre-configuration and dynamic restoration are two schemes for network survivability. For each scheme, survivability algorithms can be applied at either Optical Channel sublayer (Och) known as link-based. Or, Optical Multiplex Section sublayer (OMS) known as …

An Investigation Of The Factors That Influence The Career Aspirations Of Year 12 Science Students, Christina R. Holly Jan 2005

An Investigation Of The Factors That Influence The Career Aspirations Of Year 12 Science Students, Christina R. Holly

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

What has become apparent in recent years is the lack of upper secondary students choosing science related subjects in their final years of schooling. Even of those students who choose science subjects to study in Years 11 and 12 in Australia, many tend to choose non-science pathways for tertiary education options (department of Education, Science and Training, 2003). This is worrying trend, given the numbers of science professionals and teachers required in the new age of technology. By investigating a sample of Western Australian Year 12 students that study any science related subjects, it is expected that there may be …

Palliative care commenced in Australia in the early 1980s. Although the value of palliative care has become more widely recognised by the public and other health care professionals, there is still a lack of understanding about what palliative care is and the depth and scope of this specialty area of health care. The research that I present in this thesis is based on examination of palliative care practice in a selection of Australian services, undertaken with the aim of enhancing understanding of Palliative Care. The significance of the research arises from the notion that members of the Australian community should …

Children And Healthy Eating: A Global, Policy And School Curriculum Perspective, Erica Logan Jan 2005

Children And Healthy Eating: A Global, Policy And School Curriculum Perspective, Erica Logan

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Healthy eating is a topic most people would consider they have an understanding of, yet it is an area which is not often addressed from a critical perspective. Healthy eating is freely discussed in society. It is a dominant discourse used commercially and frequently appears in educational 'texts', however the discourses surrounding healthy eating for children are not well analysed and are most often controlled by the media and often not challenged. A critical perspective to children's eating is adopted for this portfolio and multiple perspectives bought to bare regarding the globalisation of food cultures, and governance and policy influences …

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis examines the role of the artist at the beginning of the twenty-first century. It focuses on the interaction between art and science in an exploration of the dialectical processes that may occur in that interaction. Researchers have recently developed techniques in stem cell technology and genetic modification that offer remarkable potential and bring possible advantages and disadvantages for scientists and the wider community. In response to these new technologies, scientists and artists have developed collaborative projects and, in some instances, artists have moved from the studio to the science laboratory to create work called sci-art, bio-art, or moistmedia. …

Fine Mapping Of Sequences Important For Fiv Rna Packaging And Their Mechanism Of Function, Akela Ahmed Mohamed Ghazawi Jan 2005

Fine Mapping Of Sequences Important For Fiv Rna Packaging And Their Mechanism Of Function, Akela Ahmed Mohamed Ghazawi

Theses

The mechanism by which retroviruses preferentially encapsidate their unspliced genomic RNA among millions of both spliced viral and cellular mRNAs in the cytoplasm represents a function of great specificity. This selection process requires that the genomic RNA contain packaging determinants unique to its own RNA that can interact specifically with the packaging proteins of the viral particles, the Gag polyproteins. Knowing the exact sequences involved in packaging should provide basic insights into the mechanism of preferentially encapsidating the full length genomic RNA.

We have been interested in mapping the packaging determinants of the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), a lentivirus that …

What are studio teachers' experiences o/teaching-learning in the atelier as they utilize documentation, collaboration, and reflection as a way to inform their practices? …

Law And Development As Democratic Practice, Thomas F. Mcinerney Jan 2005

Law And Development As Democratic Practice, Thomas F. Mcinerney

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The importance of law and institutions to development is now widely recognized. Significant amounts of development assistance now target legal and institutional reform. These efforts have generally viewed legal and institutional reform as technical matters. Designing laws and institutions appropriate to local circumstances has been seen as primarily requiring the application of competent expertise. Yet practitioners in this field may gain a different perspective. Reforms that on paper seem wise may not get implemented, and those that are implemented may not achieve their intended aims. In this Article, the Author contends that one reason for this outcome is the failure …

Rethinking Life Online: The Interactional Self As A Theory For Internet-Mediated Communication, Marcelo Vieta Jan 2005

Rethinking Life Online: The Interactional Self As A Theory For Internet-Mediated Communication, Marcelo Vieta

Iowa Journal of Communication

Informed by the philosophies of Martin Heidegger, George Herbert Mead, and Alfred Schutz, this paper presents an emerging concept called the interactional self to illustrate how there are no clear phenomenological distinctions between the so-called "virtual world" and the dichotomously positioned "real world" in Internet-mediated communication settings. Ultimately, the paper shows how the philosophies of human experience can help the communication researcher better conceptualize the tight intermingling of the online with the offline, users' phenomenologically-rooted use-contexts, performative practices, and intersubjective life-world experiences in Internet-mediated sociability.

Frankfurtschool.Com: The Application Of The Frankfurt Schools' Critical Scholarship To The Internet, Magdalena Wojcieszak Jan 2005

Frankfurtschool.Com: The Application Of The Frankfurt Schools' Critical Scholarship To The Internet, Magdalena Wojcieszak

Iowa Journal of Communication

This paper applies the Frankfurt School theorists' conceptualization of the culture industry to the internet. First, it describes the culture industry and then it positions the debate surrounding the social impact of the internet in the framework provided by the Frankfurt scholars. This paper argues that the characteristics of the culture industry, such as rationality of production, concentration of power, and homogeneity of products and messages, do not apply to the structural features of the internet. Decentralization, end-to-end reciprocal communication, digital content, and a "commons" facilitate dissent, heterogeneity and liberalization. But increasing online commercialization and centralized control undermine the internet's …

Restoring Image In Party Schools, Rod Pritchard Jan 2005

Restoring Image In Party Schools, Rod Pritchard

Iowa Journal of Communication

College ranking guides have gained prominence and popularity in recent years as consumer-driven parents seek to find the best educational institutions for their children. While The Princeton Review's The Best Colleges publication has emerged as a popular college guide, at least one designation in the annual college guidebook, "Party Schools" (Franek et al., 2004, p. 43), creates a negative image for the colleges and universities listed. In an effort to protect the reputation of these institutions, research indicates that image restoration management techniques are widely implemented. The use of the defensive image restoration strategies is the most common, but the …

Modeling And Simulation Of Photonic Crystal Fibers And Distributed Feedback Photonic Crystal Fiber Lasers, Feng Wu Jan 2005

Modeling And Simulation Of Photonic Crystal Fibers And Distributed Feedback Photonic Crystal Fiber Lasers, Feng Wu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is comprised of a solid or air core surrounded by periodically arranged air holes running along the length of the fiber, which guides light in a fundamentally new way compared to conventional optical fibers, affecting almost all areas of optics and photonics. To analyze the dispersion and loss properties of PCFs, a two-dimensional (2D) finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) method combined with the technique of perfectly matched layer (PML) is developed. The propagation constant and loss can be obtained with accuracies in the orders of ∼10-6 and ∼10 -3, respectively.

The Bragg fiber is a kind of …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this research study was to discover how effective student organization advisors influence student organization success on a residential midwestern campus. Although the roles, skills, and importance of advising have been noted in higher education, leadership studies and business management literature, the advisors' perspective on the importance and practical use of these attributes had not been studied. This inquiry was guided by the following research questions: What constitutes effective advising of a student organization on a four-year residential campus? To what roles, practices, and values do advisors most strongly attribute to their success? A qualitative approach was employed …

"Second-Class Families": Media Portrayal Of Adoption In America, Jennifer Ellen Struve Jan 2005

"Second-Class Families": Media Portrayal Of Adoption In America, Jennifer Ellen Struve

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Despite legal recognition of adoption as a legitimate family form, research suggests that adoptive families face a special set of circumstances revolving around the societal stigma involved with adoption. Additionally, adoptees admit to experiencing legal, social, and institutional discrimination because of their adoptive status. Although there have been many celebrations of adoption (such as Dave Thomas), there are cultural norms regarding the family that discipline us to see adoption negatively. Researchers acknowledge that the language surrounding adoption is negative, but do not pursue what that language is or where it appears. Thus, the purpose ofmy study was to determine how …

Play therapy techniques are valuable tools for a variety of professionals who work with children. One need not be a registered play therapist to implement play techniques when working with child clients. There are many types of clients that would benefit from play therapy. There are several different theoretical approaches, but the researcher chose to focus on Adlerian Play Therapy, Client-Centered Play Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Play Therapy, and Psychodynamic Play Therapy. The paper considers the best location to implement play techniques, by urging the counselor to be aware of the setting's location within the building, ease of cleaning, available space, and …

The Implications Of Anger And School Violence, Ronda Hilbert Jan 2005

The Implications Of Anger And School Violence, Ronda Hilbert

Graduate Research Papers

A series of highly publicized school shootings in the Untied States generated the misperception of an epidemic of school violence. Fears of school violence stimulated an ill-advised expansion of zero tolerance school discipline policies and the widespread distribution of profiles or warning signs of potentially dangerous students for use by school administrators. This paper presents that little is known about student threats of violence, although students in special education tend to commit disciplinary violations at a higher rate than regular education students according to some studies. Threats of violence pose a dilemma for educators, who must balance federal requirements, the …

A Preferred Vision For Leading Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Ralph J. Hughes Jan 2005

A Preferred Vision For Leading Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Ralph J. Hughes

Graduate Research Papers

Great leadership is the key to achieving success within any organization, team, and in my case, school. A strong leader always tries to keep things positive and his or her team on the same page, trying to achieve the same goal. To achieve the highest level of success within a school, an educational leader must: develop and implement a shared vision, develop clear communication, provide strong instructional leadership, and develop and maintain a positive school climate.
