Performance Analysis Of Network-Level Qos With Encoding Configuration For Unicast Video Streaming Over Ieee 802.11 Wlan Networks, Nicola Cranley, Mark Davis
Performance Analysis Of Network-Level Qos With Encoding Configuration For Unicast Video Streaming Over Ieee 802.11 Wlan Networks, Nicola Cranley, Mark Davis
Conference papers
Video streaming has a large impact on the resource requirements of the WLAN. However, there are many variables involved in video streaming, such as the video content being streamed, how the video is encoded and how it is sent. This makes the role of radio resource management extremely difficult. In this paper we investigate the effect that video encoding configurations has on the network resource requirements for unicast video streaming in a WLAN environment. We compare the network resource requirements of several content types encoded at various encoding configurations with varying I-frame frequencies, target encoding bit rates and hint track …
Pulsed Field Magnetometry For High-Speed Characterisation Of Rare Earth Magnets, Robin Nathan Cornelius
Pulsed Field Magnetometry For High-Speed Characterisation Of Rare Earth Magnets, Robin Nathan Cornelius
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Pulsed Field Magnetometers (PFM) offer large advantages over conventional magnetic characterising equipment for high speed measurement of modern permanent magnet materials. A lack of systematic design procedure and many perceived problems has prevented adoption of the technique. This thesis examines in detail the system components of a PFM, the perceived problems and presents design methodology for critical system components and data processing methods to recover accurate and repeatable material characteristics. A method for the design of position insensitive gradient coils is presented and compared to a conventional design. By using an inverse Biot-Savat simulation, the coupling from each turn of …
An Exploration Of The Internationalisation Process Of Irish Indigenous Software Smes, Kathy Keeney
An Exploration Of The Internationalisation Process Of Irish Indigenous Software Smes, Kathy Keeney
Masters
From meagre beginnings in the 1970s, the Irish software industry has emerged as one of the most interesting, exciting and successful Irish internationally traded service industries. Some thirty years later, the industry is still characterised by high levels of international trade activity, through niche market orientation and innovative and flexible management. Through an exploration of the internationalisation process in the context of Irish indigenous software firms, this thesis seeks to understand how this process of international expansion occurs, the barriers encountered throughout the process, future challenges for the industry and the use of strategic partnership activities as a facilitator in …

Multi-Agent Fitness Functions For Evolutionary Architecture, Richard Holden
Multi-Agent Fitness Functions For Evolutionary Architecture, Richard Holden
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
The dynamics of crowd movements are self-organising and often involve complex pattern formations. Although computational models have recently been developed, it is unclear how well their underlying methods capture local dynamics and longer-range aspects, such as evacuation. A major part of this thesis is devoted to an investigation of current methods, and where required, the development of alternatives. The main purpose is to utilise realistic models of pedestrian crowds in the design of fitness functions for an evolutionary approach to architectural design. We critically review the state-of-the-art in pedestrian and evacuation dynamics. The concept of 'Multi-Agent System' embraces a number …

Case studies
The publishing division came into being as RTE Publishing Ltd in May 2003. Muirne Laffan was appointed Executive Director of RTE Publishing. Having spent several years in New York with the advertising agency McCann Erickson, Muirne had joined RTE to head up its commercial activities division some 18 months previously. With the reorganisation, some of these activities had been moved. Thus, for example, TV programme sales became part of the TV division to ensure that issues involved in programme sales were incorporated into programme planning at an early stage.

Standing outside a pub, Billy Barrett and Martin Murphy faithfully obeyed the no smoking ban that was now a feature of the Irish social scene. As they smoked their cigarettes, they discussed the singer/songwriter who played inside the premises that they stood against so nonchalantly. The gig was enjoying a great reception, with the crowd enthusiastically applauding the eclectic mix of blues, rock, and traditional music. ‘Well, Billy, how would fancy starting a record company?’ asked Martin, as if it was not really a challenge. ‘The singer playing inside wants to record a CD but she has no label. I …
An Examination Of Ethical Issues Pertaining To Educational Research, Greg Gallagher
An Examination Of Ethical Issues Pertaining To Educational Research, Greg Gallagher
Level 3
The social sciences in general and educational researchers in particular have become more and more conscious of ethical propriety and the need for universally acceptable codes of ethical conduct in recent years. This newfound interest stems in part from criticisms of innovative contemporary research methodologies, and the fear that they may be at odds with certain fundamental ethical principles. This, in turn, has resulted in the integrity and validity of some of these new contemporary styles of research being held up to scrutiny and debated by adherents to the more conventional research methodologies.
This paper begins by tracing back to …
Capitalising On Culture: An Evaluation Of Culture-Led Urban Regeneration Policy, Luke Binns
Capitalising On Culture: An Evaluation Of Culture-Led Urban Regeneration Policy, Luke Binns
Articles
Municipal authorities throughout Western Europe are attempting to drive regeneration of their urban centres through policies designed to attract inward investment and tourism. In an attempt to woo these outside economic agents in, a variety of cultural consumption oriented policies have been developed and marketed. These include investment in hard cultural-infrastructure such as museums or art galleries, and in less physical aspects such as holding events like the European Capital of Culture. A polemical debate surrounds this use of cultural policy with a clearly economic agenda. This paper gives a brief synopsis of some culture-led regeneration models, addresses the validity …
Information Delivery On Mobile Devices Using Contour Icon Sonification, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle
Information Delivery On Mobile Devices Using Contour Icon Sonification, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle
Conference papers
This paper examines the use of musical patterns to convey information, specifically in the context of mobile devices. Existing mechanisms (such as the popularity of the Morse code SMS alert) suggest that the use of musical patterns on mobile devices can be a very efficient and powerful method of data delivery. Unique musical patterns based on templates known as Contour Icons are used to represent specific data variables, with the output rendering of these patterns being referred to as a Sonification of that data. Contour Icon patterns mimic basic shapes and structures, thus providing listeners with a means of categorising …
The War On Terror And Iraq In Historical Perspective, Antony Anghie
The War On Terror And Iraq In Historical Perspective, Antony Anghie
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article critically examines the doctrine of pre-emption articulated in the National Security Strategy and the arguments made in favour of the proposition that it represents an emerging norm of international law and is compatible with the UN Charter. It focuses in particular on the possible implications with the UN Charter. It focuses in particular on the possible implications of this doctrine for Third-World states. It also examines the war in Iraq and pre-emption may be seen as replicating, in certain respects, a much earlier colonial history.
The Bearded Bandit, The Outlaw Cop, And The Naked Emperor: Towards A North-South (De)Construction Of The Texts And Contexts Of International Law's (Dis)Engagement With Terrorism, Ikechi Mgbeoji
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
For over one hundred years, the definition of the term "terrorism" has been subjected to political propaganda. In addition, dubious self-righteous indignation or outrage, often expressed by various states or prominent politicians at the occurrence of acts of terror have often masked the participation of those same states in international terrorism. In this endless cycle of finger pointing, accusations, denials, and counter-accusations, the problematic of what constitutes terror in legal parlance has degenerated into an exercise in name-calling. This sad spectacle frustrates objective and sincere attempts at fashioning out legal and policy framework to deal with the scourge of terrorism. …

Maintaining The Identity Of Dynamically Embodied Agents, Alan Martin, Gregory O'Hare, Brian Duffy, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, John Bradley
Conference papers
Virtual agents are traditionally constrained in their embod- iment, as they are restricted to one form of body. We propose allowing them to change their embodiment in order to expand their capabili- ties. This presents users with a number of di±culties in maintaining the identity of the agents, but these can be overcome by using identity cues, certain features that remain constant across embodiment forms. This pa- per outlines an experiment that examines these identity cues, and shows that they can be used to help address this identity problem.

Correlation Of Spectroscopic And Biochemical Assays Postionising Radiation Exposure In Human Skin Cell Analogues, Aidan Meade, Hugh Byrne, Fiona Lyng
Conference papers
Raman spectroscopy, as an evaluation of the products of ionising radiation exposure in biological systems, has been utilised mainly in the evaluation of the impact of exposure in tissue, cellular constituents and live animals. It has also been recently demonstrated that Raman spectroscopy can demonstrate key spectroscopic changes in the live cell associated with significant apoptotic and necrotic chemical damage. The present preliminary work utilises Raman spectroscopy at 514.5 nm to evaluate the results of exposure to -rays in HaCaT cells from a Co-60 therapy source, in tandem with other biological assays. The results demonstrate that a number of spectral …

We're Not "Free-Loading Jocks" : The Presentation Of The Self In The Everyday Lives Of The Collegiate Level Student Athlete, Katie Leanne Sorrell
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Student-athletes live complex lives because they are expected to maintain a number of master statuses. According to Goffman (1959), individuals perform in frontstage. However, other scholars, building from Goffman, state that this is more complex than this. The backstage also has performance elements in it. These regions for student-athletes can become complicated because they have to manage their impressions depending on their social situation. I conducted 18 in-depth, semi-structured interviews to explore the presentation of self in the everyday lives of collegiate level student athletes. Myths abound surrounding college athletes, such that athletes are surrounded with limitless opportunities, or that …

Spatial intensity correlation functions are obtained from near-field scanning optical microscope measurements of semicontinuous metal-dielectric films. The concentration of metal particles on a dielectric surface is varied over a wide range to control the scattering strength. At low and high metal coverages where scattering is weak, the intensity correlation functions exhibit oscillations in the direction of incident light due to excitation of propagating surface waves. In the intermediate regime of metal concentration, the oscillatory behavior is replaced by a monotonic decay as a result of strong scattering and anomalous absorption. Significant differences in the near-field intensity correlations between metallic and …

Traces In Proximity To Gaps In Return Planes, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren, Theodore M. Zeeff
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Coupling between circuitry on printed circuit boards can be mitigated by a variety of well-known techniques. One such technique is to isolate circuitry in different areas of the printed circuit board by strategically placing a gap in the signal return plane. However, this technique is only effective at reducing common-impedance coupling, which is generally not a significant coupling mechanism at frequencies above 1 MHz. This paper investigates the effect of a gap located between and parallel to adjacent microstrip traces. The effect of the gap on the mutual inductance and mutual capacitance is evaluated. Laboratory measurements and numerical simulations show …

A New Microsensor System For Plant Root Zone Monitoring, Chang-Soo Kim, Sandeep Sathyan, D. M. Porterfield
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The objective of this work is to develop a new microsensor system that can monitor dissolved oxygen and hydration environment at the plant root zone. A miniaturized plant growth system is prepared including the root zone layer, either a porous ceramic tube or porous ceramic wafer on which the plant is grown, and an underlying fluidic channel to deliver nutrients and water to the root zone. We demonstrate the feasibility of using a flexible microsensor array for dissolved oxygen detection, and a four-electrode impedance microelectrode for wetness detection on the surface of a porous tube nutrient delivery system. The unique …

Is There Room for More Social Responsibility in Asia's Business and Economic Turn Around? by Joaquin L. Gonzalez III
This article provides an overview of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and its impact on social development with a special emphasis on Asia. One underlying argument that it makes is that, although many of the CSR interventions being applied globally are relatively ”new” to Asia, CSR, when operationally defined as “corporation-community collaboration (CCC) towards social development,” becomes a vintage concept familiar to generations of Asian entrepreneurs and the communities they serve. However, in spite of its long history, Asian corporation-community collaboration …

Audio Time-Scale Modification Using A Hybrid Time-Frequency Domain Approach, David Dorran, Eugene Coyle, Robert Lawlor
Audio Time-Scale Modification Using A Hybrid Time-Frequency Domain Approach, David Dorran, Eugene Coyle, Robert Lawlor
Conference papers
Frequency-domain approaches to audio time-scale modification introduce a reverberant artefact into the time-scaled output due to a loss in phase coherence between subband components. Whilst techniques have been developed which reduce the presence of this artifact, it remains a source of difficulty. A method of time-scaling is presented that reduces the presence of the reverberation by taking advantage of some flexibility that exists in the choice of phase required so as to maintain horizontal phase coherence along frequency-domain subband components. The approach makes use of appealing aspects of existing time-domain and frequency-domain time-scaling techniques.
Multi Pitch Estimation By Using Iir Comb Filters, Mikel Gainza, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle
Multi Pitch Estimation By Using Iir Comb Filters, Mikel Gainza, Robert Lawlor, Eugene Coyle
Conference papers
A technique for detecting the pitches of a polyphonic signal is presented. The system utilises modified IIR comb filters, which are generated to ensure that a null (stop band notches) exists at multiples of note frequencies and that a very flat pass band is present in the remain of the spectrum. Thus, the signal spectrum is not distorted after applying the filters to the audio signal, which is the case when using FIR comb filters. the presented approach improves upon an existing multi pitch detection model based on a FIR comb filter framework.
