Women-Writing-Women: Three American Responses To The Woman Question, Theresa Defrancis Jan 2005

Women-Writing-Women: Three American Responses To The Woman Question, Theresa Defrancis

Open Access Dissertations

The Woman Question served as a catalyst in Kate Chopin's, Nella Larsen's, and Willa Cather's portrayal of the eroticized female body. The question evolved, in part, from Herbert Spencer's 1873 article "Psychology of the Sexes" and centered around Spencer's "theories" on woman's nature, her function, and her differences--biological, sexological, and sociological--from man. Chapter one historicizes the Woman Question by examining its influence in these three areas. The sciences, however, did not hold a monopoly on the debate. Rather, the question elicited reactions from many arenas--popular newspapers and magazines, literature, political cartoons, public policy--and in different forms--articles, music, caricatures, legislature. Throughout …

Using The Optical Microscopy Imaging Method For Studying Electromigration, Linghong Li Jan 2005

Using The Optical Microscopy Imaging Method For Studying Electromigration, Linghong Li

Open Access Dissertations

Electromigration is a microscopic phenomenon involving electric field-induced diffusion, which is very relevant to damage in interconnects. A common method to monitor interconnect degradation is through electrical resistance measurements, which requires direct electrical contacts. It is desirable to develop non-contact methods to monitor electromigration damage formation. In this thesis, we propose a novel Optical Microscopy Imaging Method (OMIM), and we provide a theoretical description and experimental results. OMIM not only provides a new method for studying electromigration, but also provides a useful method for studying other micro-devices and materials in a non-contact mode.

Magic Mountain, Diana Al-Hadid Jan 2005

Magic Mountain, Diana Al-Hadid

Theses and Dissertations

My installations are propositions for an imaginary world that relies on its own internal logic, a world of believability without recognition. While the work references landscape it also emphasizes its contrivance, as it is automatically estranged in an "unnatural" gallery setting. I subvert or de-familiarize the materials and processes that I use in the service of creating a fictitious environment. My places are impossible places. They are irregular, illogical, and unstable. Our imagination can be one of most dangerous things to psychological stability as it is an inventory of all things possible, no matter how irrational or improbable. The irrational …

Objects And Images, Mary Bergshneider Magneson Jan 2005

Objects And Images, Mary Bergshneider Magneson

Theses and Dissertations

I create to emphasize the aesthetic or beauty of an object. When I begin a work, I feel the influence of the many photos I am constantly looking at and analyzing. I look at how light affects color, how light defines form, and how patterns are created by repeated shapes. I try to reproduce the things I see, but with dramatic impact by enlarging shapes and emphasizing colors. While my paintings are about pure aesthetics, my books are social commentary.

Modulation Of Gene Expression By Tumor-Derived Mutant P53. Role Of Transactivation In Gain-Of-Function., Mariano J. Scian Jan 2005

Modulation Of Gene Expression By Tumor-Derived Mutant P53. Role Of Transactivation In Gain-Of-Function., Mariano J. Scian

Theses and Dissertations

It was hypothesized that the C-terminal sequences for mutant p53 would be required for oligomerization. and oligomerization may be critical for gain-of-function. An N-terminal deletion mutant of p53 that deletes amino acids 1-293 was used as a tool to perform hetero-oligomerization studies. This mutant retains the entire oligomerization domain but dispenses off the transactivation domain and a large portion of the sequence- specific DNA-binding domain. Co-transfection experiments show that p53 del. 1-293 forms hetero-oligomeric complexes with p53-D281G. Also. co-expression of p53 del. 1- 293 with p53-D281G inhibited p53-D28lG-mediated transactivation of the EGFR and MDRl promoters suggesting that hetero-oligomerization inactivates transcriptional …

Justice Tom C. Clark’S Legacy In The Field Of Legal Ethics, Vincent R. Johnson Jan 2005

Justice Tom C. Clark’S Legacy In The Field Of Legal Ethics, Vincent R. Johnson

Faculty Articles

Justice Tom C. Clark served as this nation’s Attorney General and as a Supreme Court Justice during a pivotal time in this nation’s history; however, his greatest legacy is the tremendous impact he and the Clark Report, whose development he oversaw, has in the area of lawyer discipline and ethics. Prior to the Clark Report, there existed a “scandalous situation” with respect to lawyer discipline; however, in the subsequent decades, revolutionary change has occurred. That change is largely attributable to Justice Clark, whether directly or indirectly, as was found in 1992 by the American Bar Association in its McKay Report. …

Ethics In Government At The Local Level, Vincent R. Johnson Jan 2005

Ethics In Government At The Local Level, Vincent R. Johnson

Faculty Articles

Efforts to foster ethics in government should begin at the local, rather than state or national, level. City officials and employees make a broad range of decisions that affect the welfare of citizens in many ways. Those actions determine to a large extent whether, on an everyday basis, people have equal access to the benefits and opportunities that government provides. Focusing efforts on city government ethics may also be the best way to build public support for high standards of conduct at all levels of government. If the public comes to expect (and demand) fair treatment and ethical conduct from …

Long-Term Cardioprotection With Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibition Against Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury: Role Of Nitric Oxide., Vladimir Paul Daoud Jan 2005

Long-Term Cardioprotection With Phosphodiesterase-5 Inhibition Against Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury: Role Of Nitric Oxide., Vladimir Paul Daoud

Theses and Dissertations

Recent studies have shown that the potent phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitor, sildenafil citrate, induces a powerful cardioprotective effect against ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in rabbit and mouse hearts. However, the effect of this drug in inducing long-term protection against I/R injury remains unknown. The goal of this study was to identify the duration of the protective window of sildenafil citrate as well as vardenafil, a more potent PDE-5 inhibitor. Rabbits were treated with sildenafil (0.7 mg/kg, iv), vardenafil (0.143 mg/kg), or an equivalent volume of saline. After 24 hrs, 48 hrs, 96 hrs, or 7 days of sildenafil treatment, the hearts were …

The Need, Feasibility, And Means Of Establishing A Speech Center, Julie Carter Irvin Jan 2005

The Need, Feasibility, And Means Of Establishing A Speech Center, Julie Carter Irvin

Theses and Dissertations

According to Tom Shachtman, "the speech of too few people achieves eloquence, and that of the vast majority does not even reach a tolerable level of articulate behavior" (5). Articulate behavior has not always been a rare characteristic; from antiquity through the mid-twentieth century, the study of rhetoric was privileged and considered necessary for a well-rounded education. If today's society is inarticulate, then how can eloquence and articulateness be reintroduced as staples of a successful person in today's society? The answer is easy - through the study of rhetoric. After examining the study of rhetoric from antiquity to the present, …

Real Time Frequency Analysis Of Signals From Lasso Catheter For Radiofrequency Ablation During Atrial Fibrillation, Prashant Yadav Jan 2005

Real Time Frequency Analysis Of Signals From Lasso Catheter For Radiofrequency Ablation During Atrial Fibrillation, Prashant Yadav

Theses and Dissertations

Real time spectrum analysis of signals obtained through lasso catheter during radiofrequency ablation of pulmonary vein was performed to determine the channel with dominant frequency. Threshold algorithm was used for signals which could be classified as type I and type II AF. Type III AF Signals which were highly fractionated or differentiated were evaluated for frequency content by performing Fast Fourier Transform. Data from Seven patients was collected and an episode of 180 ± 40 seconds was recorded and analyzed for each pulmonary vein that showed electrical activation. Frequency spectra for one second segment of signal for each channel were …

Guidelines For Data Collection Techniques And Methods For Roadside Station Origin-Destination Studies, Bryan P. Guy, Jon D. Fricker Jan 2005

Guidelines For Data Collection Techniques And Methods For Roadside Station Origin-Destination Studies, Bryan P. Guy, Jon D. Fricker

JTRP Technical Reports

Origin-Destination studies are often used in transportation planning to determine the travel patterns (origin-destination matrix) of vehicles and goods in a particular area. Given these travel patterns, the impacts of alternative solutions to current and future transportation problems can be evaluated. Therefore, it is important that the travel patterns be accurately measured. However, it is not always clear what data collection method should be used to obtain the type of data needed, while maximizing quality and minimizing the time and cost. The objective of this research is to review both conventional and experimental techniques for roadside station OD studies, and …

Telling Stories About Health Insurance: Using New Films In The Classroom, Elizabeth Pendo Jan 2005

Telling Stories About Health Insurance: Using New Films In The Classroom, Elizabeth Pendo

Articles

In keeping with the theme of "The Mass Media's Influence on Health Law and Policy," this essay is designed to share my experience using clips from three recent popular films as a method of enhancing coverage and discussion of legal and policy issues surrounding the private health insurance system, and to provide some practical advice for others interested in doing the same. It builds upon a presentation that I gave along with Professors Timothy S. Hall and Ross D. Silverman at the 2004 Health Law Teachers Conference entitled "Health Law, Policy and Media," and was inspired by Professor Paul Bergman's …

Proposed Statement On Auditing Standards : Audit Documentation;Audit Documentation; Exposure Draft (American Institute Of Certified Public Accountants), 2005, Jan. 12, American Institute Of Certified Public Accountants. Auditing Standards Board, American Institute Of Certified Public Accountants. Audit Documentation Task Force

Exposure Drafts, Comment Letters, and Statements of Position

This exposure draft introduces a proposed Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) that will replace SAS No. 96, Audit Documentation (AICPA, Professional Standards, vol. 1, AU sec. 339). This proposed SAS establishes standards and provides guidance to an auditor on audit documentation for audits of financial statements or other financial information being reported on. Issues surrounding audit documentation continue to be discussed due to events affecting the profession that post-date the development and issuance of SAS No. 96. Specifically, some state regulators and government auditors seek more uniformity in the preparation, filing, and retention of audit documentation of nonissuers. Audit documentation …

Race And Class In Political Science, Jennifer Hochschild Jan 2005

Race And Class In Political Science, Jennifer Hochschild

Michigan Journal of Race and Law

As a discipline, political science tends to have a split personality on the issue of whether the driving force behind political action is material or ideational. Put too crudely, White scholars tend to focus on structural conditions as the cause of group identity and action, whereas scholars of color tend to focus on group identity and conflict in order to explain structural conditions. More generally, the relevant debate within political science revolves less around Jacques Demrda versus Karl Marx (as in critical race studies) than around W. E. B. DuBois versus Thomas Hobbes-that is, whether "the problem of the twentieth …

A Crime By Any Other Name: The Semantics Of Hate, Barbara Perry Jan 2005

A Crime By Any Other Name: The Semantics Of Hate, Barbara Perry

Journal of Hate Studies

I have become increasingly dissatisfied with the continued reliance on the term “hate crime,” due in large measure to the often willful scholarly and public misunderstanding and misuse of the phrase, wherein references are made to such processes as “the criminalization of hatred” (Dority 1994). In response to such tendencies, like Gail Mason (2001, 253) in her recent Law and Critique article, “I wish to raise some questions about hate as a heuristic device.”

Progress And Economy: The Clash Of Values Over Oregon's Trojan Nuclear Plant, Gregory Nipper Jan 2005

Progress And Economy: The Clash Of Values Over Oregon's Trojan Nuclear Plant, Gregory Nipper

Dissertations and Theses

From 1976 to 1992 Portland General Electric (PGE) -- a private utility based in Portland, Oregon -- operated the Trojan Nuclear Plant near Rainier, Oregon, on the bank of the Columbia River. Trojan was the first commercial nuclear facility in the Pacific Northwest and was the largest such facility in U.S. history. From its origins, Trojan was the focus of growing conflict over atomic energy facilities and their environmental effects, risks, and costs. This thesis traces the history of Trojan, including the conditions in which PGE decided to build the plant as well as the changing conditions in which the …

To Charge Or Not To Charge?-That Is The Question: The Pursuit Of Strategic Advantage In Prosecutional Decision-Making Surrounding Hate Crime, Beverly Mcphail, Valerie Jenness

Journal of Hate Studies

We asked prosecutors how they think about hate crimes and which factors do and do not influence their decision-making processes when deciding whether to charge a hate crime (add a hate crime enhancement). Our empirical findings along these line provide the first glimpse of the dynamics that underlie the prosecution of hate crime.

White Nationalism Revisited: Demographic Dystopia And White Identity Politics, Steven L. Gardiner Jan 2005

White Nationalism Revisited: Demographic Dystopia And White Identity Politics, Steven L. Gardiner

Journal of Hate Studies

Two stimuli, both dating to 2002, drove me to write this paper. The first (and by far the more visceral) was my attendance at the biannual conference of American Renaissance (AR)- the flagship publication of the sector of the American far right considered herein. The conference was held in Washington, D.C. suburb of Herndon, Virginia, and it reflected this demographic. It was attended by some 250 mostly well-dressed, mostly middle-aged white men-along with a smattering of women-a number of whom held advanced degrees of one flavor or another. There is nothing too surprising in this: the ignorant redneck stereotype of …
