Public Health Practitioner Expert Opinion For Recommending Revisions To A Community Nutrition Mph Curriculum, Judy E. Perkin, Catherine Christie, Desiree Hayes

Nutrition and Dietetics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Soliciting practitioner input into the planning or revision of Master of Public Health programs is desirable to ensure that students are adequately prepared for public health practice. Members of the American Dietetic Association Public Health/Community Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group (ADA-PH/CNDPG) were surveyed regarding the structure of, as well as the knowledge and skills desirable for, inclusion in a Master of Public Health community nutrition program. A total of 998 surveys were mailed in June 2001 with a return rate of 34%. Approximately 73% of respondents indicated public health employment. The average response regarding optimal time for full-time degree completion was …

One-Way Street In A Global City: Don Delillo And The Lugubrious Boredom Of The New Economy, Samuel Gerald Collins Jan 2005

One-Way Street In A Global City: Don Delillo And The Lugubrious Boredom Of The New Economy, Samuel Gerald Collins

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

few of the things we have fought against in cultural studies include the erroneous perceptions that the forces associated with globalization are 1) benefiting the world's peoples and 2) producing a homogeneous global culture. Against this, we have proffered endless texts documenting the sufferings of the world's peoples and critiquing the underlying assumptions regarding U.S. and Western hegemony as well as more hopeful tracts charting a more equitable future as an alternative to crushing regimes of neo-liberalism. In this, we have been joined by countless activists as well as others in women's studies, Latino/a studies, international relations and …

I Connect Therefore I Am: Connectivity And Networking In Bodies, Technologies, Communities, And Selves, Anthony Lambert Jan 2005

I Connect Therefore I Am: Connectivity And Networking In Bodies, Technologies, Communities, And Selves, Anthony Lambert

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The notion of connection refers to both metaphorical and material practices informing our understandings of the flows of energy and information within human bodies, communities, geographies, and technological networks. Cranny-Francis offers a definition of connection which accounts for the term's significance in the contexts of both Cultural Studies and multimedia literacy:

It refers to the ways in which texts generate meanings through their relationship with other texts, to the development of multimedia technologies that are characterized by their connectivity (the web, the net), and to the ways in which meanings are generated crucially by the connection between texts …

The Influence Of Geomorphic Setting On Ground Water Denitrification In Forested Riparian Wetlands, Dorothy Q. N. Kellogg Jan 2005

The Influence Of Geomorphic Setting On Ground Water Denitrification In Forested Riparian Wetlands, Dorothy Q. N. Kellogg

Open Access Dissertations

Riparian wetlands are potentially significant landscape features for controlling groundwater nitrate export to surface waters. Reach- and watershed-scale variability hinder efforts to predict riparian denitrification potential and manage riparian zones based on functional assessments. Groundwater denitrification is influenced by the presence of subsurface carbon and by flow paths. Of the three major geomorphic settings of glaciated regions (glacial till, glacial outwash, and alluvium), outwash and alluvium were considered. Riparian wetlands situated in outwash and alluvium are frequently characterized by low-gradient, deep, stratified sediments transmitting high groundwater fluxes, with considerable retention times possible. Research objectives were to (1) compare the vertical …

Women's Marital Surname Choice And The Rhetorical Act, Mary-Rebecca Ebeling Jan 2005

Women's Marital Surname Choice And The Rhetorical Act, Mary-Rebecca Ebeling

Open Access Master's Theses

This study was undertaken to determining whether surname choice of women who kept their name after marriage was a rhetorical choice. Five women provided a written narrative of their choice to retain their birth surname upon marriage. Investigators aimed to determine themes present in the narratives provided, and compare them to themes identified in previous studies. Analysis revealed evidence that the choice to keep their names was a rhetorical choice. Underlying this choice was the intent to be perceived as independent women with personal and professional identities. Pride in cultural and familial traditions was also apparent, as was a belief …

Maximizing Early Childhood Practices By Incorporating Constructivist Principles In An Elementary School, Pamela Evanshen, B. Clark

ETSU Faculty Works

In most public schools, children begin school in kindergarten. Recently, many school systems have begun to implement programs for preschoolers, ages three and four. Georgia introduced the first statewide universal pre-K program in 1995 which offers all 4 year old children free preschool. New York, Oklahoma and Florida have followed (Barnett & Hustedt, 2003). Tennessee recently passed a bill to use $25 million of lottery money to fund preschool for children considered "at risk" ("Latest Pre-Kindergarten News," n.d.). The substantial amount of research involving brain development has stressed the importance of quality experiences in the early years of life (birth-8 …

What Does It Take To Be A (Lesbian) Parent - On Intent And Genetics, Sanja Zgonjanin Jan 2005

What Does It Take To Be A (Lesbian) Parent - On Intent And Genetics, Sanja Zgonjanin

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

This Note analyzes KM v. E.G., 13 Cal. Rptr 3d 136 (Cal. Ct. App. 2004), the first case brought in front of any court of appeals in the U.S. where the lesbian egg donor (the genetic mother) who raised her children for six years together with her partner (the gestational mother) was denied parental rights after the couple separated. The application of the intent based determination of parentage originally devised to solve competing parental claims in surrogacy case is criticized as inappropriate, unnecessary and unjustified. The absence of legal protections for lesbian parents and standards addressing issues unique to lesbian …

Liability For Direct Advertising Of Drugs To Consumers: An Idea Whose Time Has Not Come, Aaron D. Twerski Jan 2005

Liability For Direct Advertising Of Drugs To Consumers: An Idea Whose Time Has Not Come, Aaron D. Twerski

Hofstra Law Review

Hofstra Law Review has instituted a new "Ideas" section. Leading scholars are encouraged to write short essays from six to ten pages of length. The goal is to allow for publication of ideas that scholars and members of the judiciary wish to air but do not want to develop into full blown heavily footnoted articles. In this inaugural section Dean Twerski has written an article suggesting the reason why courts have continued to immunize drug manufacturers from liability if they give adequate warning of drug related risks to the physician. This immunity continues in force even though manufacturers have advertised …

Re-Membering Law In The Internationalizing World, Vivian Grosswald Curran Jan 2005

Re-Membering Law In The Internationalizing World, Vivian Grosswald Curran

Hofstra Law Review

This article examines some of the challenges to understanding new, non-national legal configurations as contexts of origin color understandings and evaluations of legal standards allegedly shared across legal communities. It examines a case on assisted suicide, Pretty v. U.K., decided by the European Court of Human Rights. The case illustrates mechanisms of legal integration in the European court, followed by a process of dis-integration that occurred when the decision was reported to the French legal community. The French rendition reflected a legal community's inability to process common law information through civil law cognitive grids. The article addresses both the capacity …

The Evolution Of The "Patient": Shifts In Attitudes About Consent, Genetic Information, And Commercialization In Health Care, Janet L. Dolgin Jan 2005

The Evolution Of The "Patient": Shifts In Attitudes About Consent, Genetic Information, And Commercialization In Health Care, Janet L. Dolgin

Hofstra Law Review

This paper considers the importation of the notion of autonomous individuality into the world of healthcare during the last half century; it also explores the related transformation of the patient into a consumer. These developments have many beneficial dimensions. However, this paper focuses on these developments gone awry so that the result is some sort of excess. The paper describes three such excesses. It refers to the first as the elaboration of autonomous individuality and illustrates it with reference to the involution of the informed consent doctrine. The second excess is referred to as the perversion of autonomous individuality; this is …

Jesse Lawson And The National Sociological Society Of 1903, Michael R. Hill Jan 2005

Jesse Lawson And The National Sociological Society Of 1903, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The National Sociological Society, rather than the American Sociological Society (now Association), was apparently the first American organization with national aspirations to place, in 1903, the fateful word "Sociological" in its corporate name. Unfortunately, the recent centennial of the National Sociological Society (NSS) passed unnoticed and uncelebrated. The NSS, convened in 1903, was a shortlived organization of African Americans and whites, Northerners and Southerners, academic men, politicians, clergymen, and others, who vigorously confronted the most pressing conundrum in Jim Crow America: how to solve the race problem. The NSS was championed by Jesse Lawson -- an African-American attorney, educator, and …

Morphogenesis In Germinating Fusarium Graminearum Macroconidia, Steven D. Harris Jan 2005

Morphogenesis In Germinating Fusarium Graminearum Macroconidia, Steven D. Harris

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Fusarium graminearum (teleomorph Gibberella zeae) is a significant pathogen of wheat and corn. F. graminearum forms multicellular macroconidia that play an important role in dissemination of the disease. The spatial pattern of morphogenesis in germinating macroconidia is described. Germ tubes preferentially emerge from the apical cells in a bipolar pattern that appears to be common to filamentous fungi. Chitin deposition occurs at two locations: the spore apices and cortical regions of macroconidial cells that subsequently produce a germ tube. The spatial pattern of morphogenesis requires the presence of functional microtubules, which may be responsible for the transport of key …

Advocate General Jacobs' Contribution To Competition Law, Valentine Korah Jan 2005

Advocate General Jacobs' Contribution To Competition Law, Valentine Korah

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article focuses on some of AG Jacobs' opinions regarding matters of competition, starting with his contributions on the meaning of “undertaking” in Höfner and AOK, under a combination of the Treaty Establishing the European Community (“EC Treaty”) Articles 82 and 86 (special and exclusive rights), and Risparmio, under Articles 86 and 87 (State aids). It does not deal with many other opinions he wrote on the meaning of “undertaking,” such as those in Albany and Pavlov. Finally, it discusses his opinions on refusals to deal in Bronner and Syfait, along with a selection of other judgments on the topic.

Congress, Religion, And The Cold War Consensus From 1952-1956, Alexandra Clark Layfield Jan 2005

Congress, Religion, And The Cold War Consensus From 1952-1956, Alexandra Clark Layfield

Honors Theses

The Congress of the 1950s unanimously passed seven different pieces of legislations related to religious faith from 1952 to 1956. The fact that these congressional actions passed with little or no dissent and the fact that the congressmen supporting the legislation offered similar rationales (e.g. the Cold War) told much about the early fifties. The fifties were a decade stereotyped as conservative and conformist during which citizens held family and religion above all else. I conducted research over about a twelve month span which overlapped with the eight month period in which I was writing the body of the thesis. …
