Characterization Of A Wavelength-Tunable Antenna-Coupled Infrared Microbolometer, Michael A. Gritz, Meredith Metzler, Mohamed Abdel-Rahman, Brian Monacelli, Guy Zummo, Donald Malocha, Glenn D. Boreman

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Wavelength tuning is demonstrated in an antenna-coupled infrared microbolometer. With a 300-mV control voltage, we observed a tuning range of 0.5 mu m near 10 mu m. A metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitor underneath the antenna arms causes the shift of resonance wavelength with applied voltage. We develop a device model that agrees well with measured results.

Extraordinarily High-Contrast And Wide-View Liquid-Crystal Displays, Qi Hong, Thomas X. Wu, Xinyu Zhu, Ruibo Lu, Shin-Tson Wu

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

A computer simulation model based on oblique-angle Jones matrix and Poincare sphere is developed for optimizing the design of film-compensated multidomain vertical-alignment liquid crystal display (VA-LCD). According to this design, a contrast ratio higher than 10 000:1 is predicted over the entire +/- 85 degrees viewing cone for the four-domain VA-LCD. Potential application for liquid-crystal display television is emphasized.

Ubiquitin Ligase Mkrn1 Modulates Telomere Length Homeostasis Through A Proteolysis Of Htert, Jun Hyun Kim, Sun-Mi Park, Mi Ran Kang, Sue-Young Oh, Tae H. Lee, Mark T. Muller, In Kwon Chung Jan 2005

Ubiquitin Ligase Mkrn1 Modulates Telomere Length Homeostasis Through A Proteolysis Of Htert, Jun Hyun Kim, Sun-Mi Park, Mi Ran Kang, Sue-Young Oh, Tae H. Lee, Mark T. Muller, In Kwon Chung

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Telomere homeostasis is regulated by telomerase and a collection of associatedproteins. Telomerase is, in turn, regulated by post-translational modifications of the rate-limiting catalytic subunit hTERT. Here we show that disruption of Hsp90 by geldanamycin promotes efficient ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation of hTERT. Furthermore, we have used the yeast two-hybrid method to identify a novel RING finger gene (MKRN1) encoding an E3 ligase that mediates ubiquitination of hTERT. Overexpression of MKRN1 in telomerase-positive cells promotes the degradation of hTERT and decreases telomerase activity and subsequently telomere length. Our data suggest that MKRN1 plays an important role in modulating telomere length homeostasis …

1.4kw High Peak Power Generation From An All Semiconductor Mode-Locked Master Oscillator Power Amplifier System Based On Extreme Chirped Pulse Amplification(X-Cpa), Kyungbum Kim, Shinwook Lee, Peter J. Delfyett

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

The concept of eXtreme Chirped Pulse Amplification (X-CPA) is introduced as a novel method to overcome the energy storage limit of semiconductor optical amplifiers in ultrashort pulse amplification. A colliding pulse mode-locked semiconductor laser is developed as a master oscillator and generates 600fs pulses with 6nm bandwidth at 975nm. Using a highly dispersive chirped fiber Bragg grating (1600ps/nm) as an extreme pulse stretcher and compressor, we demonstrate similar to 16,000 times extreme chirped pulse amplification and recompression generating optical pulses of 590fs with 1.4kW of peak power. These pulses represent, to our knowledge, the highest peak power generated from an …

Growth And Characterization Of Sputtered Bsto/Bam Multilayers, S. Srinath, N. A. Frey, R. Heindl, H. Srikanth, K. R. Coffey, N. J. Dudney

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Multilayers of Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BSTO) and BaFe12O19 (BaM), with tunable permeability and permittivity are attractive systems for radio frequency and microwave applications. We have grown multilayers of BSTO and BaM using magnetron sputtering on Al2O3 substrates. Film growth conditions such as sputtering parameters were optimized to obtain high quality multilayers. X-ray diffraction established that both BSTO and BaM were formed and cross-sectional SEM studies showed sharp interfaces between BSTO and BaM layers. Magnetization showed a large coercivity (similar to 2000 Oe) consistent with the hexaferrite component. The hysteresis loops also revealed the distinct influence of magnetocrystalline and shape anisotropies at different …

The Factor Structure Of The Presence Questionnaire, Bob G. Witmer, Christian J. Jerome, Michael J. Singer Jan 2005

The Factor Structure Of The Presence Questionnaire, Bob G. Witmer, Christian J. Jerome, Michael J. Singer

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Constructing a valid measure of presence and discovering the factors that contribute to presence have been much sought after goals of presence researchers and at times have generated controversy among them. This paper describes the results of principal-components analyses of Presence Questionnaire (PQ) data from 325 participants following exposure to immersive virtual environments. The analyses suggest that a 4-factor model provides the best fit to our data. The factors are Involvement, Adaptation/Immersion, Sensory Fidelity, and Interface Quality. Except for the Adaptation/Immersion factor, these factors corresponded to those identified in a cluster analysis of data from an earlier version of the …

Homoserine And Asparagine Are Host Signals That Trigger In Planta Expression Of A Pathogenesis Gene In Nectria Haematococca, Zhennai Yang, Linda M. Rogers, Yuanda Song, Wenjin Guo, P. E. Kolattukudy

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Some pathogenesis-related genes are expressed in fungi only when the pathogen is in the host, but the host signals that trigger these gene expressions have not been identified. Virulent Nectria haematococca infects pea plants and requires either pelA, which is induced by pectin, or pelD, which is induced only in planta. However, the host signal(s) that trigger pelD expression was unknown. Here we report the isolation of the host signals and identify homoserine and asparagine, two free amino acids found in uniquely high levels in pea seedlings, as the pelD-inducing signals. N. haematococca has evolved a mechanism to sense the …

Project-Management Tools For Libraries: A Planning And Implementation Model Using Microsoft Project 2000, Ying Zhang, Corinne Bishop

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

This paper discusses how Microsoft Project 2000 was utilized at the University of Central Florida Libraries to manage an e-reference implementation project. As libraries today adopt more information technologies, efficiently managing projects can be challenging. The authors' experience in the implementation of QuestionPoint e-reference software in October 2003 is described. Their conclusion illustrates that project-management tools, such as Microsoft Project 2000, offer practical workflow-management techniques for libraries. This article represents the first attempt to discuss the use of Microsoft Project 2000 to manage a library project.

Miller

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Chalcogenide glasses have attracted considerable attention and found various applications due to their infrared transparency and other optical properties. The As-S-Se chalcogenide glass, with its large glass-formation domain and favorable nonlinear property, is a promising candidate system for tailoring important optical properties through modification of glass composition. In this context, a systematic study on ternary As-S-Se glass, chalcogen-rich versus well-studied stochiometric compositions, has been carried out using three different techniques: Raman spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. These complementary techniques lead to a consistent understanding of the role of S/Se ratio in chalcogen-rich As-S-Se glasses, …

Infrared Laser Beam Temporal Fluctuations: Characterization And Filtering, José M. López-Alonso, Brian Monacelli, Javier Alda, Gary D. Boreman Jan 2005

Infrared Laser Beam Temporal Fluctuations: Characterization And Filtering, José M. López-Alonso, Brian Monacelli, Javier Alda, Gary D. Boreman

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

IR lasers are widely used in electro-optical applications, especially in detector characterization systems. These lasers can be extremely sensitive to fluctuations in the operational temperature of their cavity and other environmental factors. Due to these influences, the laser output signal normally fluctuates randomly. These variations make it difficult to characterize the laser waist position and exact focus, which in turn causes difficulty with detector measurement. We apply a multivariate statistical approach to characterize and filter these variations and to calculate the "best focus" of a carbon dioxide laser operating at 10.6 mu m. Using this method, the "best focus" can …

Nonlinear Beam Interactions In 1d Discrete Kerr Systems, J. Meier, G. I. Stegeman, D. N. Christodoulides, R. Morandotti, M. Sorel, H. Yang, G. Salamo, J. S. Aitchison, Y. Silberberg

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

The interaction between parallel beams in one-dimensional discrete Kerr systems has been investigated using arrays of coupled channel waveguides. The experiments were performed in AlGaAs waveguides at 1550 nm which corresponds to photon energies just below one half the semiconductor's bandgap. The input intensity and relative input phase between the input beams was varied and the output intensity patterns were recorded. Observed was behavior ranging from a linear response, to soliton interactions between moderately and then strongly localized spatial solitons. Finally the influence of multiphoton absorption and asymmetric beam inputs on these interactions was investigated at very high intensities.

Multiple Major Increases And Decreases In Mitochondrial Substitution Rates In The Plant Family Geraniaceae, Christopher L. Parkinson, Jeffrey P. Mower, Yin-Long Qiu, Andrew J. Shirk, Keming Song, Nelson D. Young, Claude W. Depamphilis, Jeffrey D. Palmer Jan 2005

Multiple Major Increases And Decreases In Mitochondrial Substitution Rates In The Plant Family Geraniaceae, Christopher L. Parkinson, Jeffrey P. Mower, Yin-Long Qiu, Andrew J. Shirk, Keming Song, Nelson D. Young, Claude W. Depamphilis, Jeffrey D. Palmer

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Background: Rates of synonymous nucleotide substitutions are, in general, exceptionally low in plant mitochondrial genomes, several times lower than in chloroplast genomes, 10-20 times lower than in plant nuclear genomes, and 50-100 times lower than in many animal mitochondrial genomes. Several cases of moderate variation in mitochondrial substitution rates have been reported in plants, but these mostly involve correlated changes in chloroplast and/or nuclear substitution rates and are therefore thought to reflect whole-organism forces rather than ones impinging directly on the mitochondrial mutation rate. Only a single case of extensive, mitochondrial-specific rate changes has been described, in the angiosperm genus …

Numerical Model Of The Temperature Dependence Of The Up-Conversion Efficiency Of Fluoride Crystals Codoped With Ytterbium And Thulium, A. Rapaport, J. Milliez, M. Bass, A. Cassanho, H. Jenssen Jan 2005

Numerical Model Of The Temperature Dependence Of The Up-Conversion Efficiency Of Fluoride Crystals Codoped With Ytterbium And Thulium, A. Rapaport, J. Milliez, M. Bass, A. Cassanho, H. Jenssen

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We review the role of temperature on the up-conversion efficiency of materials that are good candidates to be used as the three primary-color emitters in optically written displays. A rate equation model is given for the blue emitting material that includes temperature-dependent coefficients for energy transfer and cross relaxation. Increased temperature leads to decreased up-conversion efficiency. The effect of pumping conditions on heating the emitting material is illustrated and explained. Steps to reduce the temperature rise when pumping up-conversion materials are described.

Development Of Head-Mounted Projection Displays For Distributed, Collaborative, Augmented Reality Applications, Jannick P. Rolland, Frank Biocca, Felix Hamza-Lup, Yanggang Ha

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Distributed systems technologies supporting 3D visualization and social collaboration will be increasing in frequency and type over time. An emerging type of head-mounted display referred to as the head-mounted projection display (HMPD) was recently developed that only requires ultralight optics (i.e., less than 8 g per eye) that enables immersive multiuser, mobile augmented reality 3D visualization, as well as remote 3D collaborations. In this paper a review of the development of lightweight HMPD technology is provided, together with insight into what makes this technology timely and so unique. Two novel emerging HMPD-based technologies are then described: a teleportal WED (T-HMPD) …

Low-Power, Multiport, Ultrafast, Parametric Switching In Cascaded Waveguide Couplers, Roland Schiek, Robert Iwanow, George Stegeman, Thomas Pertsch, Falk Lederer, Yoo Hong Min, Wolfgang Sohler

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We explore an approach to multiport, phase-insensitive all-optical switching of milliwatt power signals based on linear coupling in cascaded directional couplers and on nonlinear parametric gain via the second-order nonlinearity. For the basic unit, a two-core coupler, we experimentally demonstrated ultrafast transparent switching of 1550 nm signals triggered by 5-ps-long control pulses at approximate to 775 nm with a peak power of 1.3 W. Theoretically, we show that this concept has the potential for terabit/s switching with a few picojoules control energy and without pulse degradation.

Discrete Wave Propagation In Quadratically Nonlinear Media, Robert Iwanow Jan 2005

Discrete Wave Propagation In Quadratically Nonlinear Media, Robert Iwanow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Discrete models are used in describing various microscopic phenomena in many branches of science, ranging from biology through chemistry to physics. Arrays of evanescently coupled, equally spaced, identical waveguides are prime examples of optical structures in which discrete dynamics can be easily observed and investigated. As a result of discretization, these structures exhibit unique diffraction properties with no analogy in continuous systems. Recently nonlinear discrete optics has attracted a growing interest, triggered by the observation of discrete solitons in AlGaAs waveguide arrays reported by Eisenberg et al. in 1998. So far, the following experiments involved systems with third order nonlinearities. …

The Effects Of A Single Exercise Bout On Plasma Leptin Concentration In Obese Males, George Kyriazis Jan 2005

The Effects Of A Single Exercise Bout On Plasma Leptin Concentration In Obese Males, George Kyriazis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent findings suggest that leptin may be regulated in response to abrupt changes in energy homeostasis. Therefore, it is conceivable that transient changes in energy balance induced by exercise may also regulate leptin synthesis and secretion. As such, we hypothesized that acute increases energy expenditure (i.e. exercise), may regulate leptin concentrations in obese individuals. Fifteen healthy obese males underwent either a single exercise session of moderate intensity (58.4 % ± 4.0 of VO2max) for 60 min (n=8), or served as controls (n=7). The exercise session elicited an energy expenditure of 567±80 Kcal. No significant changes in plasma leptin (pre 23.5± …

Deriving The Density Of States For Granular Contact Forces, Philip Metzger Jan 2005

Deriving The Density Of States For Granular Contact Forces, Philip Metzger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The density of single grain states in static granular packings is derived from first principles for an idealized yet fundamental case. This produces the distribution of contact forces P_f(f) in the packing. Because there has been some controversy in the published literature over the exact form of the distribution, this dissertation begins by reviewing the existing empirical observations to resolve those controversies. A method is then developed to analyze Edwards' granular contact force probability functional from first principles. The derivation assumes Edwards' flat measure -- a density of states (DOS) that is uniform within the metastable regions of phase space. …

The Effects Of Exposure To Feminist Ideology On Women's Body Image, Rachel Diane Peterson Jan 2005

The Effects Of Exposure To Feminist Ideology On Women's Body Image, Rachel Diane Peterson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Body image disturbance has become an increasing problem among women (Cash & Henry, 1995). Thus researchers have begun to focus on methods of prevention and intervention. Programs utilizing psychoeducation and Festinger's cognitive dissonance theory, for example, have been found to reduce body image dissatisfaction and related symptomatology. The information provided and potential impact are limited, however, because the interventions do not offer women an adaptive method of interpreting the many appearance-related messages they experience. This study sought to determine if exposure to feminist theory of body image may act as a buffer – a filter through which cultural messages about …
